New York Values

My old friend Jerry Rivers was on Bill O’Reilly the other night expounding on “New York Values” and what Ted Cruz the most conservativeman in the world was dog whistling when he said that in the Iowa caucuses. Jerry put his finger on it. It is basically an Anti-Semitic ploy to signal to people who hate those “New York Jews.”

I have seen this before. It is nothing new. It is Hymie town from Jesse Jackson. It is Ted Cruz not voting for benefits for the cops and fireman injured in the aftermath of 911. I get that a lot of the country hates New York and it’s people. New York is not for everyone. New Yorkers can be assholes. No doubt. We are very opinionated. We are always in a rush. We don’t have time for the slow and easy country style that is so prevalent out there in the rest of the country. We are not the laid back surfer style from Cali. It’s not for everyone.

What we can do is spot a phony. Even when they agree with us ideologically. A great example is Bernie with the Daily News. The Daily News is almost as left wing as the Daily Worker. But when they interviewed Bernie Sanders they illustrated what a complete bullshit artist he really is. He didn’t even know how to take the subway for fucks sake. He said he would buy a token. We haven’t had tokens for ten years. It is all Metro cards. I think he saw someone taking the subway in the movies. A real man of the people that Bernie.

It’s the same thing with the One True Ted. I was a big fan at one time. Until I took a closer look. That seems to be a recurring pattern with Ted. The more you know him the more you feel like you want to walk out into traffic. He seems to be a gold plated phony. Talk about your hucksters. Your flim flam men. His whole act is not ringing true for me. Don’t get me wrong. He is just about the only other Republican I would vote for if he is the nominee. He is far superior to the likes of Kasich or Jeb or Little Marco. But he is not the kind of guy I would like to vote for like Jeff Sessions or Tom Cotton. There is just something about him that is off putting. I know Trump has that same effect on a lot of people. I do know that the Donald is authentic. He is an authentic New York Asshole. Just what we need to overturn the tables in the temple and get things done. Maybe that is just my New York Values talking.

I am going for lunch. Maybe a pastrami sandwich and a knish. Oy.

Calling Cruz antisemitic is what you call a bald-faced lie. You can critique plenty about Cruz, but there is no candidate anywhere anytime who is father from antisemitic. This shows how Trumpism corrupts and inevitably leads to surrender of ones values in order to stay with it.

Cruz is a guy so unlikable, he has to pay people to write nice things about him (and nasty things about Trump) on the blogosphere.

He's aced himself out of any SCOTUS seat he might have had because, with the dirty tricks and the delegate poaching, even the few Conservatives in the Senate, much less the Whigs, figure he can't be trusTED.

Since he went to Princeton for 7 years, he'd know the phrase and what it means. And this will bite him not only in the New York area (CT and North Jersey), but also around Philadelphia (DE and South Jersey) which also has a large Jewish community.

And then there's Southern CA and all the nice Jewish people in the entertainment industry.

PS bag, that he used the phrase doesn't make him anti-Semitic. He wanted to impress IA with what a Holy Roller he was. That it might come back to bite him probably never entered his head because he thought nobody would spill the beans.

Hell, he's still trying to use it to raise money.

Of course Cruz said it to play to rural Iowans, because they know exactly what he meant, just like most people do, and it has nothing to do with Jews or 9/11 or any other nonsense that the delicate snowflakes of N.Y. need to imagine. New Yorkers sound like BLM with this stuff. It may cost him in New York now, but really how much can it cost him where he never had any chance anyway. Donald Trump was pro-abortion 6 months ago, so, Iowans, vote Cruz.

I heard the phrase ‘New York Values’ and I did not think of Jews.

I thought of real-estate deals where private property was stolen by government to be given to private developers. I thought about corrupt politicians sucking the dicks of anyone who can flash some cash. I thought about Wall Street and how there was a huge taxpayer bailout for the one and only industry that New York has (i.e. investing other people’s money).
The only positive thing I see about Trump is the unfairness of how his opponents have treated him. I think calling Cruz an anti-Semite is weak.

You don't live on the East Coast. There are all kinds of code words for all us undesirable minorities - Micks, Eyeties, even the Dutch, who were there first.

Big Jewish communities in South Jersey, NE Philadelphia, name it. He shot the entire Northeast when he said that.

And, as I say, Cruz spent 7 years at Princeton, so he'd know New York slang.

Trooper York said...

Wow. I must have struck a nerve for the Cruz apologists to be squealing and spitting so quickly and so vociferously.

Anybody that is a New Yorker has run into this attitude before. Don't believe me. Ask ripic who is an actual authentic hebe. Ask him about some of his encounters out there on his travels.

When I used to get into fights with the likes of Cedarford and the Crack Emcee it was often a lonely fight. I am not even Jewish but I can smell this stuff a mile away. Being an Irish looking guy I have often been in situations where people say what they really think and not what they have as a politically correct. A lot of the words people use for Trump have another word attached to it when these guys talk amongst themselves. Pushy. Obnoxious. Greedy. What is that second word? I think you know.

New York Values = Liberal Values (such as they are)

Jewish Values = Liberal Values (particularly in NY)

So, to the extent NY Values leaks onto Jews, we deserve it.

As a Jew, I'm ashamed of my fellow Jews for the damage the majority of us have done to this country with our New York/Liberal Values.

Trooper York said...

Cruz is a master at plausible deniability. The best since Nixon.

He makes statements or puts out emails or social media hits. Then he backtracks or apologizes or fires the person supposedly responsible. But the damage is done. I tell you he is a master.

Jewish values are the basis of our country. Many of them are the basis of our Christian faith. They are our older brothers. Believe in one God. The sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman to produce children. Fidelity. Helping others in your community.

Ok they go off the rails here and there. I mean everybody loves ham and lobster. But still. Jewish values are the bedrock of America. New York Values are as well.

What kind of values are we supposed to espouse. Chicago Values? California Values? Mexican Values? Muslim Values?

Hah! right after you told us about New York values, I included it in a comment at Insta.

Anybody that is a New Yorker has run into this attitude before. Don't believe me. Ask ripic who is an actual authentic hebe. Ask him about some of his encounters out there on his travels.

You don't have to be a New Yorker or a Jew to run into this. Good little Irish Catholic that my mother raised me to be, I've gotten this sort of thing on the Philadelphia Main Line (home of the Quakers) and in NE OH, land of the Babdists and Methodists.

Cruz is a master at plausible deniability. The best since Nixon.

He makes statements or puts out emails or social media hits. Then he backtracks or apologizes or fires the person supposedly responsible. But the damage is done. I tell you he is a master.

Actually, he's never fired anybody that I know of, but the rest is clearly his MO.

Thing is, like Nixon, he makes implacable enemies doing it. Ben Carson now is on Donald Trump's side. Marco Rubio asked for his delegates to remain under his control when word got out Cruz was looking to poach them and his donors are giving the Anointed One the cold shoulder.

They got Nixon and, the farther down the road we go, the likelier it is they'll get the One True Ted. Especially if there are women in it.

They may have him already, just waiting for the perfect moment.

I quote again one of the world's masters of revenge, "To choose one’s victim, prepare one’s plans minutely, slake an implacable vengeance, and then go to bed. There’s nothing sweeter in the world".

They too will tell you how they have seen it all their lives from people who had no such ideas in their head. Next time Al Sharpton whines about imaginary racism, you can say: "I'm with ya brother. "Is there a contest behind the scenes among Fox News “personalities” to see who can dive deepest into the tank for Trump? If so, looks like Geraldo’s playing to win. Your move, Hannity.

We’re awfully far out on the limb when Bill O’Reilly (whom Cruz himself noted last night spends an awful lot of time defending Trump) and Eric Bolling feel compelled to defend Cruz from an attack that benefits Trump. But they’re right. This is absurd from the word go, starting with the fact that it came on a day when Cruz was in Brooklyn making matzoh and singing “Dayenu.” Cruz is so ostentatiously pro-Israel that he once showed up at an event devoted to ending persecution of Christians in the Middle East and lectured the Arab attendees about standing with the Jewish state. His base, including and especially evangelicals, loves him for gestures like that. There are pockets of voters on the right who’d appreciate the sort of anti-semitic dog-whistle Geraldo’s describing here, but it’s his friend Trump, not Cruz, who has those votes locked down. That’s another example for Jonathan Last’s inevitable sequel to “Trumpism corrupts”: Geraldo Rivera, himself Jewish by faith and one of the most outspoken amnesty shills in media, going to bat for the hero of the alt-right who’s spent months demanding mass deportation, all in service to smearing Trump’s opponent."

Bags you miss the point. I am not saying that I am being discriminated against. I am saying it is my brothers the pushy hebes. I have my eyes wide open about this. You can't see it because you haven't experienced it in real life.

Californians are among the worst in this vein. You know I work in the garment industy. Very heavily Jewish. I was buying jeans from this very sweet girl in Cali who was your typical liberal californian. She asked me if my New York Jews would buy her jeans because they were too expensive and they were too cheap. She thought most of my clients and most of the people in NY were Jewish. When we went out there to LA to the garment center everything was in Spanish. They all had an attitude that since we were from New York we had to be members of the tribe.

I tell you what. I don't want someone with California mañana Mexican Surfer Dude values. But hey that's just me. What do I know? I hear I am the angry guy. So go with Mr. Warmth the Most Conservative Man in the World.

Some people might do that about Jews, but you specifically said Cruz did. An obvious lie using a far too convenient slur. Just like the ones about Cruz's supposed affairs where a number of married women with husbands and family were accused of cheating on their families with no evidence whatsoever. Now why would people do such a despicable thing? Answer: Trumpism.

Trooper York said...

I don't know if Trump can win New York. He might drive up Hillary's negatives and the Bernie voters might be dispirited enough to stay home. He can bribe the black vote to stay home or even siphon off some with an economic appeal. He has a chance. Not a great one. But a possible one.

Cruz has no chance of winning anything in the Northeast. Not New York. Not the Rust Belt states. He will be lucky to do as well as Romney.

bagoh20 said...

Like Jews, and Blacks, and New Yorkers, they are people, individuals. Each with a different story. You might say illegal immigrant values and I'd know what that means, but I bet you don't, or even care. It's the hate you're into. Now, I will get the two minute hate for not sufficiently hating the approved group of people. It's really a beautiful thing you do there.

Trooper York said...

I specifically said that Cruz used a dog whistle for a very specific reason. Trump comes right out and says it. About illegal Mexican criminals. About Muslim terrorists. Cruz is much more crafty and political. But then he is a politician.

As far as the women go I remember when you were throwing everything but the kitchen sink at Trump and said you had to do it because the Democrats were going to do it in the general and we have to find out if it will stick. Well that is what is happening to the Most Conservative Man in the World. Isn't that what you wanted? Full vetting and all of the bad shit out in the open? Or is that only good to do to Trump?

Trooper York said...

You see bags you are pretty funny. Illegal immigrant values. Parse that for a minute. Illegal. By their very existence they break our laws. They come here to get our social services that our taxes pay for. They fill our hospitals and emergency rooms and help bankrupt our health care system that is already on its last legs. They take the jobs of our workers by working off the books and for less money than Americans. And they are doing it all in one way....illegally.

But pointing that out is.....hate?

Got it. Thanks.

I wouldn't rule it out.

There's going to be as bitter a fight over the Demo nomination as the Republican. Blacks, Hispanics, and kids just plain don't like Hillary and Bernie's chances of wooing the superdelegates get a lot better if he wins NY.

I think it is quite possible that it won't be Hillary that is the Democratic nominee. Obama's Justice Department could throw in a last minute indictement. You remember what the Jug Eared Jesus said about Hillary. "You are indictable enough Hillary."

Bernie's people would swallow that in a New York Values Minute and she gets in without getting punched around in the primaries. Her Indian ancestry bullshit would not have been examined and if she runs against a pansy like Paul Ryan it would not even come up and she could win easily.

Total misdirection. The media points to a brokered crooked convention for the Republicans when it is the Democrats who are going to do it.

In the interest of clarifying things (God forbid), I offer the chart, and just the chart, in this piece to show, even if Daddy Cruz got 1/3 of the NY delegates, he'd still be out of the race.

Even if it's a contested ballot, Ryan and Rubio don't want him because he can't be trusted even by them - and McConnell was sending him money back when he was lucky to finish third.

As for November, a lot can happen. Ask any nurse or doctor if there isn't something physically wrong with Hillary and you'll get stroke, concussion, any number of things. There's also the FBI, which really seems to want her up before a grand jury. She also seems to be coming apart at the seams mentally.

So we might not even be facing her come November. We might get lucky and face Bernie.

And never forget the First Law of Hillary - the more people see her, the less they like her.

As for Trump, if he comes to the convention with, say 1400 delegates, he'll do what Reagan did and pick a running mate suitable to Rinse & Co.

They almost had one in '08.

Thing is, the Feel The Bern crowd is pretty passionate about him. I've seen more Bernie stickers and signs than anything else. If the Demos try to pull something when it looks like he has the nod, I can see the kids walking - they have no resonance with Roosevelt or Harry Truman or Jack Kennedy or Willie, so the Democrat Party is just another brand to them - and that might be enough to sway it.

Trooper York said...

I remember the people here who lost their shit about Trump when the Neo Nazi's and David Duke endorsed him and demanded that he disavow it every day in every interview all day 24/7.

Well there is an evangeical pastor who endorsed Ted Cruz and who the Most Conservative Man Alive touted and thanked on his website. When informed about some of his more controversial thoughts about Jews, the One True Ted doubled down and refused to disavow him.

Here is a sampling of Reverend Mike Bickel's thoughts:“The Lord says, ‘I’m going to give all 20 million of them the chance to respond to the fishermen. And I give them grace.; And he says, ‘And if they don’t respond to grace, I’m going to raise up the hunters.’ And the most famous hunter in recent history is a man named Adolf Hitler,” he told an audience."

John McCain disavowed support from Rev. Bickel but I don't know if that is a good thing or a bad thing based on what I think about John McCain.

Here is an article from "The Times of Israel." A pretty straight forward examination of the End of Times slant to the evangical support of Israel and their attitude to the Jews.

You can, and many do just that. I've known people who have run from New York because "I can't get any work done there." Of course not, because the streets always lure you away from your desk. Is it a wasted life, the dream life of the street wanderer? Yes. But it's VERY seductive.

What I don't understand is how people could have come to the conclusion that talking about NY values is being anti-semetic. I cannot fathom putting the two together. As someone who has worked and lived in NYC back just after the Koch era and had to endure the utter ineptitude of Dinkins, I can tell you a think or two about NY'ers. They are brash, toxic waste, greasy haired, racoon eyed mutants that would as soon feast on your bones than give you the time of day. The entire place has the smell of rot and decay, that's how the Ny'ers who were born and raised their can withstand it, they are steeped genetically in its maismic decay. It isn't so much about NY'ers being assholes. I mete a lot of NY'ers that were fantastic people, but the city, it's culture, the ebb and flow of the street turns you into prey by the sheer rank stink of the place. If the garbage isn't piling up in the streets because the douche bag sanitation workers beef, or some dickhead taxi fag isn't trying to earn points by gunning for you as you cross the street, or the rats the size of some small dogs, or seeing one of the infinite homeless walking dead pissing or shitting in the streets or trying to steal your shit, or some other fucking prick trying to rob, rape, or murder you because you looked at him the wrong way, then it's an okay place to be. If you know where to go the food is outstanding. NEVER GO TO THE BRONX. I made the mistake once of getting on the SIF as a lark just to see what SI (Staten Island) was like and I wish I'd never gone, fucking guids. The hasidim are just a giant pain in the ass with their giant fucking cylindrical black hats and their eighty thousand kids. Some of their wives are kinda hot though. Seriously. Bags mentioned the Reverend Al. I am not a fan as I guess you can figure out. But I will give him this. He knows the reality. He oversells it. It is a racket. Just like Joe Colombo and the Italian American Civil Rights league is. Trump knows this. When he was asked about Sharpton attacking him as a racist Trump didn't take it personal. He said "I know Al. AL is gonna do what Al is gonna do. That's fine. He can do his dance and then we can sit down and figure out a deal."

That is what real life experience in New York means. That is what dealing in the volatile real estate market teaches you. You win and you lose. You stake out an extreme crazy off the wall position. Your dream spot. Then you move back to what you can get. That is how you make a deal. You don't start where you want to end up. That is how the Republicans have negotiated for the past twenty years. We need to change.

I much prefer Yiddish.

edutcher said...

The gender thing comes from Latin (if you ever took it in school, it jumps out at you).

Latin had neutral declensions (ending in -um, -e, -es, -is), as well as masculine (ending in -us) and feminine (ending in -a). It's why we say things like alumnus and alumna.

Or used to.

The Romance languages streamlined some of them, although Spanish seems to be the closest to Latin. No contractions.

The Blonde thinks it's a plot because they use more syllables.

Tell you wife to learn Korean when she gets her nails done.

Tell you kids to learn Chinese when they go to the restaurant so they don't get that "special Won Ton soup."

Learn Russian before Olga gives you a massage in the Spa on the Celebrity Cruise Line if you don't want an aching sacroiliac.

Oh and learn ebonics if you are on the subway and are about to get robbed. Just sayn'

What I don't understand is how people could have come to the conclusion that talking about NY values is being anti-semetic. I cannot fathom putting the two together.

The reason is that Trump and his hack press and hack surrogates are desperately spinning. Lies, tabloid, more lies,... It's all garbage in/ garbage out for dear leader Obama ... oops I mean Trump.

edutcher said...

No spin, hardly Trump press, but you don't want to get that.

Cruz took a calculated risk nobody would know. It blew up on him.

Hell, Fox is hardly a Trump organ, especially now that Rupert's sons run it. And Geraldo is hardly Trump's man.

But the hate is all that matters. Anything that conflicts with the hate is ignored.

Trooper York said...

Jerry Rivers is Hillary all the way. He was on the Apprentice but he lost. He is not a Trump surrogate by any stretch of the imagination.

The spinning is coming out of the Cruz Camp. That is why he is at the deli today. If it wasn't a problem he wouldn't have been there.

deborah said...

Bollinger was in on that Geraldo segment, and he and O'Reilly pooh-poohed his anti-Semitic interpretation.

Where's William? He's New Yorker.

edutcher said...

O'Really was spouting the corporate line.

According to Gateway, Bolling said, "I think what he should do is he should pack it up. Leave New York. New York is April 19th. The following week April 26 is 172 delegates. Just go right there".*

Follow the link to the video.

* FWIW If Bolling said that, I think he's right. April is going to be a write off for the Anointed One from now on. Maybe he can salvage IN, but I kind of doubt it. He needed Ryan and the machine to win WI and he certainly won't get Jersey. Trump has 2 months to beat him with that stick.
`
Maybe he can pick NE in May, it's kind of Bible Belt.

deborah said...

I agree, why stick around? Trump did the same in Iowa and came in second, lol.

edutcher said...

Actually, he spent little time or money in IA and did pretty well, within the MOE and one less delegate than the winner. And Cruz was always supposed to be the favorite.

That's what hurt the Anointed One.

For all the effort, he was hoping for a much bigger haul and didn't get it and then Trump took NH and hasn't looked back since.

April, don't take this the wrong way, but you sound like your cracking under pressure here. I get that you aren't a Trump fan and I'm not a great admirer either, but I have a hard time believing that anyone could make the case that Ted Cruz calling into question NY Values equates as an anti-semetic remark. I've never heard it, i've never seen it and even my friends still in NYC and across the Hudson over in NJ think it's a weird thing to equate it to. The idea that Geraldo of all people along with Bollinger believe that to be anti-semetic only shows me they are media whores willing to run with anything to disparage Trump or Cruz, so...

A lot of bloggers are being paid to build up Cruz and run down Trump. The Lefties are scared of him, the Whigs are scared of him, the Libertarians, the Bush family, a lot of people. I'm sure there are a lot of trolls getting a check to spout Roe's talking points.

And now we learn, if there's to be a Conservative named to SCUS, the Senate Conservatives want Mike Lee, not the Anointed One. Nobody trusts him. The Whigs don't, even if he is tight with the Bush family. That's why Rubio and Ryan have been moving into position if there's a second ballot. McConnell may have sent him a check in February, but now they see how he operates.

So, it's rather interesting Geraldo made that "slip". If he's a Hillary guy, I can see why they'd want him as the nominee. Trump's an open book. The One True Ted has tried to keep a lot secret. and that stuff can bring him down.

No wonder Surber calls him the Cuban Obama.

The difference is that what I said of Trump was factual and already proven and available, not speculation, and flat out lies. This is my whole point in this thread. The lying, the surrender, the raking innocent people through the dirt for Trump. It's not comparable to anything I've said, nor is what Cruz has accused Trump of comparable the level of what Trump has resorted to.

The difference between Ike running Op Wetback is that the argument goes is that he deported field working migrants so it's comparable to Trump wanting to go after and deport illegals in this country. To me there is no difference. We've done it and it can be done again. The only difference this time is the testicular fortitude on a part of some of the right wing intelligentsia and pundit class that poo-poos the idea of such a round up of illegals and their deportation. Did Ike get any grief from any SJW's radical Marxist progressive collectivists back then? Nope because they most likely would have been jailed for being subversives. Now they are just hip and trendy and call people all kinds of despicable things to keep their debauched ideology chugging along.

To them illegals have rights too. Never mind the fact that if these same illegals illegally immigrated to Mexico up through Guatemala, the Mexican government probably would shoot them on sight. But now we have to endure imagery of that cocksucker Vicente "I suck dicks for breakfast and have dick breath all day" Fox preening his idiocy about Trump not being welcome into Mexico or that Mexico will never pay for a wall. Then Trump comes out and says, "Well, illegals won't be able to wire money to Meh-he-co." INDIGNITY ENSUES!!!

This is virtue signalling and counter virtue signalling. Seems to be more the big media complex having fun with Cruz than backing up Trump because they like him. NYC solidarity is just a good cover story.

Ted Cruz doesn't hate Jews, or if he does, he's pretty good at hiding it.

Teddy getting heckled by Arab Christians when he was talking up Israel at a "In Defense of Christians" organization event:

http://time.com/3328063/ted-cruz-booed-israel-christian-middle-east/

Being uber pro-Israel among that crowd just shows how bad he can be at pandering or a great lack of preparation for a speech. Its just well, sad. Just like tossing out NY values line and not having the balls to back it up.

And NYC values to me is, "New Yorkers can be assholes." Toss in opinated there. And won't shut up about their awesomeness. And after being out here in Oregon/west coast/etc. the transplants still think NYC is better and we should be more like them.

TLDR: Trooper, I'd be more sympathetic to New Yorkers on this one if your Governor there last year hadn't basically told a majority of the country (including many in upstate NY apparently) that their values (Christian/pro-life/pro-gun) weren't welcome in New York and they should get out. Message received.

PS Immigrant values. Thats a good one. Reminds me of all the propaganda growing up in CA and OR that the second generation and beyond immgrants will Americanize. Just wait! You'll see! My native CA went from being 78% Blanco in 1970 to 38% Blanco in 2010. Por que el white flight? Must just be racism.

Thank God!

I had thought I had lost my mantle of self righteousness. Thank God that bags found it. How the hell did it get out to California?

I think you characterization that you only use facts is not quite accurate. One small example. Remember the Trump University thing you were coming in your pants about last month? Well that is a lawsuit currently in litigation. Where the facts will be decided. In a court of law. When there is an outcome we will know the actual "Facts" Right now we only have allegations.

Now as April has said the Enquirer has often made up stories. I remember big celebrities winning big cases when they lied about them. Carol Burnett for one. They seem to have done pretty well with lying cheating politicians though. Especially when the mainstream press wouldn't touch it. Gary Hart. Bill Clinton. John Edwards.

All we have is allegations. Senator Cruz says they are lies. He could threaten to sue them. He could even win even though he is a public figure. But he is not doing that is he? Why do you think that is so? I mean he doesn't have to sue. He just has to put out a cease and desist letter and threaten them. But he hasn't done that.

Two different sets of allegations. Both being used in the campaign. One you present as "Facts." The other you dismiss out of hand as horrible lies

How does that work exactly.

OK, for those interested, which I doubt includes April, here's what got Levin so mad.

A Daily Beast story (again, hardly pro-Trump) which asserts McConnell's PAC bought 400 Gs worth of Levin books.

Roger Stone wrote about it, so did Last Refuge (I've linked to that article at the top of the post for those who want to read it). Again, the Trump people had nothing to do with it, but it is embarrassing to Levin. Blaming Trump would appear to be a CYA.

The strategy here seems to be use Daddy Cruz to make Trump toxic and then doublecross Teddy with Ryan or Rubio (or both). Any still open to the truth, check out both pieces and make up your minds.

I don't know. Given all the sneaky things that I'm darn sure the Clintons know that they're doing, I'm inclined to assume it's a dog whistle. And then he goes to make matzah with pre-schoolers today and all's well and good. Who knows? I don't doubt that Cruz does a lot of cynical positioning based on where he thinks it can get him, so did he think the anti-NYC snub needed an ethnic angle? Who knows. I hear as many Jew haters on YouTube go on about porn in Hollywood as anything related to NYC, truth be told - but that's probably not his intended audience. Do Evangelicals hate Jews? I have no idea. Their end times plans do sound awfully, er, utilitarian about Jews, but I think for a dog whistle to play they'd have to believe that Jews are a uniquely pernicious force, fixated on finding ways to actively destroy America. I'm not sure they believe that, although there's a group that certainly do.

It's possible that New Yorkers might be more sensitive to seeing anti-semitism in this. Of course I don't trust Cruz, but I don't think I can just go on that to throw the charge at him.

As for Bernie, he's just an old dude who hasn't been back recently enough to know or care much about payment methods. Is that really the criterion for phoniness? ;-) You guys are funny. It sounds like a pretty minor point. He's well authentic on enough other scores that few other politicians would touch. And one-note. Nearly every speech he makes sounds the same. Making his brain into a broken record might or might not serve him well into old age, if you know what I'm saying. But it's important that he at least believes what he wants to believe.

It's so hard to know where to go with the evangelistic conversion hunters. I've heard that hatred can get pretty strong in those parts, and then, there's so much deflection with excuses of core doctrine. Making matters even more muddled, these are probably parts of the country where "Jews for Jesus" gets the most play. So, then what? What's funny is how mixed up it all becomes. Love is hate and doctrine is practice and who knows who is using who, theologically speaking. Even funnier is the Catholic angle, because to me it seems like Catholics are the most like Jews of all - particularly when it comes to social mission and community mindedness, and yet you know how feisty I've gotten about how that show is run. But in all honesty being Jewish is essentially a more raucously, radically democratized form of Catholicism. Each rabbi or rabbinical sect is essentially his own pope. What's respectable is that the Catholic church recently decided to forego seeking conversions of Jews, which I think is a very mature step, and theologically sensible. People should respect each other, and that does it very effectively. The Jews for their part reciprocated with a similar reply in good spirit. It was a kinder, gentler way of saying that everyone has their role to play; let's not foreclose the meaning or humanity shared theology of any of them.

So what to make of Evangelicals? I have no idea. I think there's a certain two-way fascination, respect, ignorance, love and hate. It's good that they at least agree on some sort of big picture in this volatile age.

I've become interested in the Samaritans, who have grown in size as a community to almost 800 after centuries of decline and depredation, from a low of barely more than 100 just before Israel was established. What they do with Passover sacrifices is almost straight out of the Old Testament. I watched a few videos of their celebrations, which many curious onlookers can sometimes attend. What I saw was interesting. An Evangelical of some sort handed off a New Testament to one of them, and he took it, and then tossed it into the bonfires used to roast the lambs. Commenters discussed this, but essentially the view of this act being a bit insulting prevailed. This is a group brought back from almost literally the dead (a much lower ebb than the Jews ever got to), rebuilding their ancient society, spoken of very admiringly in the New Testament. The last thing they need is the disrespect of proselytization attempts built on the disrespect of presuming that some fiery hell awaits them otherwise. Is that really how a Samaritan-Christian face-to-face should proceed? I'm inclined to say gosh no.

So the Catholics seem to be straightening these things out and getting them right. But they've got a form of structured leadership that Evangelicals have explicitly rejected in favor of the more free-form Jewish model. Maybe it works for a community as small as the Jews. But who knows how well it would for Evangelicals.

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

Here's a shorter practical summary of Jews and Evangelicals.

Evangelicals probably think Jews are destroying America and many Jews probably think Evangelicals are destroying America.

Apart from that, I'm sure they are fascinated by each other's theologies and the various roles they have to play in them. Evangelicals travel to Israel and retrace Jesus' footsteps. They immerse themselves in the Jordan river. Jews in Israel and America believe in America's remarkable mission in the world, and respect that some very devout if merely symbolic Christian sentiments were instrumental to getting us there.

So on a spiritual level, I think they respect and are fascinated by each other. But practically, they each think the other is too destructive.

A very strange and interesting relationship, to say the least. And that's just when they bother to really try seeing anything from each others' perspectives. Which is almost never.

Jim in St Louis said...

I'll go along with Meth's diagnosis. "New York Values" is not a dog whistle for "Dirty Jews" and there has been no supporting evidence other that some weak sauce that Cruz gets support from nutty evangelicals. (who have a +/- relationship with the Jews.)

R&B- You might have come as close to the true nature of the relationship as I have ever seen. Well done. Except the two groups are not really in relationship with each other, they don't really interact as much as sail past each other.
