Love Can Keep Us Together

New York Radio has an interesting tradition. When I was a kid WABC was the top forty station. Harry Harrison and Ron Lundy and Cousin Brucie would play the hits over and over again in rotation. Not the long form stuff you got on FM. The short pop stuff. Jeremiah was a Bull Frog. Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves. Cherokee Woman. Young Girl. Help me Rhonda. You know. The hits.

Then WABC switched to talk. Bob Grant ruled the drive time. They brought in Rush when he started out. Gave Hannity his start. Developed Mark Levin who is still on the station. Now Rush and Hannity have moved down the dial to WOR. Now WOR used to have a lot of informational stuff. Joan Hamburg. Arthur Schwartz restaurant stuff. Gambling in the morning. Now they are hard core conservative.

They have a mid-day show that I like to listen to with Mark Simone. Mark has been a New York Radio personality for many years. He was at WABC but has moved over to WOR. Today he had a great guest. Toni Tennille. From the Captain and Tennille. Muskrat Love. You know who I am talking about. He had a very interesting interview. I know, I know it is old guy stuff. I ain’t a hip hop happening modern dude like little nicky who is listening to Kayne and shit. But I enjoyed hearing her talking about music and life and of course the Captain.

That’s not the interesting thing. The interesting thing is that Mark Simone is going to interview Donald Trump live tomorrow for an hour. A local radio host and a regular guy gets to ask questions. His callers will get to ask questions as well. That is the thing about Trump. He gets out there in the zeitgeist in the popular media. Trump is like shit. He is spread all over. He is not afraid to talk to the people. He just doesn’t want to cater to mainstream hit people like Megyn Kelly. He can go on a popular entertainment show and be right at home talking to the audience. The One True Ted has a problem with that. Did you see him on Jimmy Kimmel? That was pretty sad. His big joke was that he was going to run over Trump with his car. What is it with Cruz and traffic incidents? Did he want Trump to wander out in traffic? Is that his go-to move? Is it like Robert Blake and gunshots in front of Italian Restaurants? Is it like William Shatner and unfortunate swimming pool incidents? I hope not. I hope the most conservative man in the world isn’t encouraging deaths by automobile. He has to take a lesson from Tennille.

Love can keep us together.

Well, you do know Robert Blake once observed, "All the tough guys are dead or in jail. The rest of us are scared to death".

The One True Ted seems to be just like Hillary. He is, in fact, the R Hillary.

The closer you get to him, the less you like him.

I heard that Toni Tennille had to marry the Captain for some reason. I'll have to go back and look, but she was hot and she's still hot and she's almost 70.

PS You must have at least 10 years on me.

I go back to Richie Valens and Buddy Holly - before they died.

I'm in my mid-40's so I'm not that old.

And just to make Troop's point, a deathless quote from The Evil One, What is this democracy of which you speak?.

Oh, yeah, the media's going to eat him alive.

A host named Jimmy Launce on WJR Detroit had the end-all singer interviews, an hour long on Sundays midday I think.

He also had a daily show that they made him ruin with idiotic call-in contests. But the singer show was his own.

I looked up the Captain and Tenille on wiki. They stayed married for 39 years. Then she decided to divorce him. I guess you could say that love really did keep them together. Thirty nine years is quite a long time for pop stars to stay together. If they were involved in any interesting scandals, wiki doesn't mention them. A certain amount of dullness and predictability helps to keep a marriage together. In the long run it probably works better than love. Driven bland by love .

Trooper, be yourself, don't stroke out holding it in.

Toni talked about her marriage and what it means to be married when you are a celebrity. She seemed refreshingly normal.
