Sam Kinison, Back to School

This could be a very short post, just show it. I would like to show how I got here. Skip if you like, no offense taken.

I followed an item on Drudge about Trump supporters read a bit then skipped to comments. The first is rather long the second refers to Back to School movie.

A lot of assumptions here. This voter is wrong about a lot and he's bound to be disappointed. The "he alone" stuff is nonsense while tariffs and protectionism are bad.

Really? I checked that on YouTube. The professor is describing one aspect of economics as they do and uses the word "widgets." The Dangerfield character counters with real life business activities necessary with government as automatic business partner and all of the non-business demands that come with it. It's an amusing scene.

While at YouTube other scenes from Back to School are offered. This one with Sam Kinison is better than any of that.

Sure hope it plays. Pretty good for a Hollywood movie. Better on stage, but pretty good. Miss you, Sam.

The story of Kinison's death and the period just before is a really sad one, and frightening if you drive back and forth between Vegas an L.A. a lot, like I do.

As for the comments: Why would anyone believe that a billionaire businessman who has used corruption with politicians his whole life supposedly to great success would suddenly find them detestable and in need of being stopped. Why would Trump, of all people, want a level playing field? Does he really want the rest of us to have as much influence as he does with the establishment? To have them take our calls? What good is government if you can't pay them off?

Kinison always makes me laugh with that clip. Never understood why he drove to LV. Why not fly?

Its not like he couldn't afford it.

BTW, I drove once to LA to LV in the 1990s on a Friday. I'd never do it again, unless I could Borrow an M-1 tank.

I drove that once but I forget which direction I was going. Amazing when you get to the desert part and it is pitch black to the left and the right.

Kinison and Rodney make me laugh too

They have widened the roads a few lanes since the 90's, but you still have to plan for the right times to do it. With proper planning and a heavy foot, the 300 miles should go in 4 hours or less. The first hour is just getting out of L.A., then it's smooth desert sailing with 10 mile straightaways.

I think I was going from Vegas to Long Beach area late on a summer Sunday afternoon.

That big quote above-- I've heard it before. From one of my clients. They are worth a lot of money, started from nothing, and they love Trump. They just love him.

I made the mistake a few months back and admitted I do not trust Trump. In one of our long meetings where, at the end, we all stand around and discuss politics. It's a rare group of all various stripes of conservatives. not a single lib! (ooo yay!)
Well, after I opined that I didn't trust Trump... the Mr. growled at me. He voice raised, his face angered, and he yelled at me, defending his Trump. His wife had to calm him down. Tense moment. (OK. Mental note: don't verbalize any Trump concerns in front of Trump supporter clients.(check)) Thing is, I have a lot of respect for this couple, and their family. We've been working together for so long they feel like family. I think that is why. Family. Just smile and nod.

(One of others in the meeting told me he agrees with me on Trump, but he said it in hushed tones under his breath. *Best not to irritate the true believers.*)

At this point, Trump is the nominee. There is no way around it. Best to get on board and hope he's not at all like the last 2 celebrity governors. (Arnie and that weird guy from Minnesota)

I did the math. If everyone gets behind Trump, he should beat Hillary easily. For me, that is all that matters. Because with that power-money obsessed lying corrupt sociopath at the helm, America is over.

I love that Rodney Dangerfield clip. It is so very true.

I have to either laugh out loud or do a big facepalm....actually both....when people begin to pontificate on various aspects of business when they have never ever been in business. Guys like Bago can certainly pontificate because he has walked the walk. Created jobs, managed employees, paid the dues. Others should just STFU.

It is the Magical Thinking of non business people and politicians who have never done anything of real substance other than being politicians who then decide that they will make complicated economic decisions without having the least understanding of how those things work and what will be the ultimate fallout of their stupid rules, law and magical thinking.

Raising the minimum wage with no consideration of the financial effect on the business and the ramifications resulting from that, in the form of lowered employee participation and increased prices to the public. Passing a gigantic intrusive program like Obama Care without the least idea of how the insurance industry works or how the medical industry works. Without the least care about how this monstrosity will affect the ordinary person. Stupid is a kind word for this.

I could go on and on and on about the stupidity of our politicians AND the general public about how businesses operate and how the dynamics of economics cannot be just magically changed.

THIS is why I think that Trump may do some good as a President. A person who understands business, understands economics and who HAS experienced some failures in business. You don't win all the time. You LEARN from your failures. Unlike Obama who thinks he can do everything and doesn't need anyone....a business man/woman knows that you need a team of experts to succeed and knows that you must delegate responsibilities to be efficient and KNOWS that you must supervise and hold people accountable.

I dunno DBA- the last debate, Trump revealed his cluelessness with Obamacare, (and health insurance in general) and at one point Trump in the not-so-distant past, praised the idea of socialized medicine. I guess we just trust him, because, business.

Politicians are stupid, but at least not ONE single member of the GOP voted for ObamaCare. Not even the Maine sisters.

@ April

I'm not sure what you do, but I know I have learned that when speaking to my clients, it is really best to avoid all political subjects if possible....and religion.

It was often difficult for me because some of my clients had some pretty dumb ideas and reasons that they wanted to invest or not invest in certain companies or industries and those reasons were almost always biased by their political or ideological beliefs. The quandary for me was how to persuade them that they were hurting their own selves by using emotion to invest, without antagonizing them by pointing out (indirectly) that their ideas are stupid.

Sometimes when they would insist that they wanted to do something that I advised against, I would have them sign a disclosure that basically (paraphrasing) said. Dust Bunny Queen advised against this investment and I have decided to do it anyway. That way when the investment went bad and they tried to blame me, I had a record of...I told you so! and you signed it....remember????

I once had some children of a client come in and wanted to yell at me and blame me for their Father's loss in a stock. Like why did I force him to invest in this fly by night eco friendly green energy company that went BK?.......because your dimwitted Father insisted despite my best efforts to make him stop....SEE....here is his signature. Take me to arbitration. I dare you.

CYOA.

It was the debate before the last one. These debates all meld together.
Rubio and Cruz handed Trump his ass on the issue of healthcare. Trump just repeated one line over and over.. "across state lines", with little else to contribute.
Lucky for Trump, whoever helps Trump with his web-site, quickly updated the healthcare section with some clarification, coherence and common sense. The only hope some of us have for Trump is that he will indeed, hopefully, surround himself with the best and brightest.

I find it ironic that Ted Cruz was the only person in the senate to take a stand against ObamaCare. In return, he is hated by Trump supporters and the GOP establishment. If was a fools errand because with a presidential veto ever looming, the GOP can do NOTHING to stop Obamacare. We tried the courts and that didn't work.
The only thing that will stop ObamaCare is Obamacare.

BTW: The father was there and was pretty embarrassed when I brought out his signed statement. I dropped him as a client after that with my kiss off letter. Something like this.

Dear Mr. Client.

I must regretfully request that you transfer your account as it appears that we are not able to continue in our relationship as adviser and client due to fundamental differences in investment philosophy and in investing strategies. I'm sure that by transferring your account you will be able to find an adviser that meets your specific needs and will be able to accommodate your investment strategies.

Buh Bye!!!

Yes, but IIRC one Maine sister...Dukakis? Murray? voted for the bill to go into committee, or some such. Could have killed it right there.

Kinison is awesome. I need to watch this movie.

DBQ - well, I agree and I usually do avoid all of those subjects. Like the plague. This is an odd case because we are all conservatives, so we all like to talk about our frustrations and commiserate and compare notes. The conversations are usually positive. It was only that one time that I sparked some anger. Not good!
Overall, It's really nice, actually, but odd, certainly.

I'd like to take your advise on "Sign here because I told you so." I need to do that!

I work with builders and architects designing interior spaces. I hate to call myself and "Interior Designer", but that's what I do. I am not a decorator. In fact, I often tell clients to hire decorators for the final touches. I suck at decoration. My specialty is AutoCad drawings of all interior built-ins, tile specification and layouts, plumbing, interior trim, lighting, and all surface specifications. I occasionally do space planning as well.

I have another client who happens to live right next to Jared Polis.
Anyway, his bookshelves are filled with books of a leftist bent. Paul Krugman, Clinton books etc... He told me once, oddly, that his favorite op-ed person at the NYT is David Brookes. lol. I keep my mouth shut and change the subject as fast as I can.

Yes. Do it! It has saved me several times. I don't know if people just don't remember things or they remember it the way they wish it to be. In any case it can be done with tact and it does CYA when the client insists on something you don't want to do, or which you think is wrong.

Two of the funniest bits I remember from Sams stand-up days were 1) just after Chernobyl he said:"Well, I guess we won't have to start WW III with the Russians, we got 'em to bomb themselves!!! Bwahahahahahahahah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2) Stated that he would be the perfect spy because if captured they would never be able to get any information out of him: "You can't do anything to torture me--I've been married for two years!!!!"

PS: He also mentioned that when he got divorced he got his revenge by having a friend at the DMV change his wifes name on her license to "Lying Little Bitch" so when a traffic cop stops her etc., he'll say: "May I have your license please? Oh, I see, you're a LYING. LITTLE. BITCH! Bwahahahahahah. Funny stuff..
