Just now I'm reading William Manchester's biography of Douglas MacArthur. According to Manchester, MacArthur was one of the most transformative figures in Japanese history. In America, MacArthur gets short shrift because of his quarrel with Truman, but he was highly regarded by the Japanese. The New Deal Democrats wanted a a far more punitive American occupation, but MacArthur kept the Emperor and was relatively lenient with the war criminals. Only seven Japanese were executed for war crimes.......MacArthur's aloofness and grandiosity played much better in Asia than in America. He was venerated in the Phillipines and Japan. I wonder if he is still remembered fondly there?
