Actor Leonardo DiCaprio call for the elimination of fossil fuels

Via Time:
Last month in Paris, world leaders reached an historic agreement that provides a concrete framework to reduce carbon emissions,” he [DiCaprio] said. “This was an important first step, but we are a long way off from claiming victory in this fight for our future – for the survival of our planet.”
DiCaprio pointed to the elimination of fossil fuels as the next big step to be taken, urging business leaders to leave behind “corporate greed” in the oil industry and instead focus on the betterment of the planet.
He continued: “Our planet cannot be saved unless we leave fossil fuels in the ground where they belong. Twenty years ago, we described this problem as an addiction. Today, we possess the means to end this reliance.”
Do I need to show you the acres of carbon footprints DiCaprio has? Well, I'm not going to. Because I really don't feel comfortable singling people out for their wealth and success, even when they open their mouth and say things that encourage people to single them out.

I wonder if DiCaprio is counting on that, counting on making people appear envious of his wealth, when and if they should point out the size of his carbon footprint.

Asshole hollywood leftwing totalitarian elites want to force the rest of us live in the stone age while they live large on their private jets, yachts, islands...

We could at the very least eliminate private jet travel for people who say this stuff. Is that too much to ask, or is that kind of greed special somehow? I mean come on Leo, announce that you will no longer fly in jets or ride limos, and that you will only use public transportation. You know that would make you a goddamned hero, so do it you greedy bastard.

I hope this brave stance does not hurt his career or hinder his chance of winning an Oscar this year.

Fossil fuels are extracted with minimal energy input compared to what the fuel gives back -- we say that they are energy rich. The solar panel industry only just recently passed a milestone of creating more energy that they consumed. Getting pure enough silicon from sand is particularly energy intensive and requires energy intensive fuels.

Of course it will flavor his acceptance speech.

We need something more severe than eliminating a tried and true energy source that brings the good life to ordinary people.

I want mass sterilization of all Islamic men who want to enter any democracy or constitutional republic.

(omg - that's crazy. that's nuts, that sick.) yep.

Oh, now I get it. You just say stuff like this and then go about your life like it's complete bullshit. OK, yea, I'm on board. Lets do this. Lets save the planet. Stop fossil fuels. Tax the hell out of everyone and impoverish the poor even more. I'm with you climitistas all the way. Hey lets all fly to Rio and say it again. Woohoo!!!

Solar panel manufacturing in China is downright filthy. Pollution pollution pollution.

That's why leftists only focus on Carbon.

I've heard from a few different sources now, Rush included, how Millennials believe the cost of having an automobile mostly sitting idle is prohibitive. Insurance, wear and tear, interminable loan payments, expensive repairs when they break down... It is said Millennials have a completely different mindset about the automobile than generations past.

And so the reason why Uber and similar services are taking off.

Who knows? in a not so distant future cars might not be as ubiquitous as they are today. Not to mention how tech advances are making things greener and all that.

If he really cared, he would have admitted that he is responsible for a lot of carbon put in the air, and ask us all to stop driving to the movies to reduce his effect. Leo, we're gonna drown in salt water if you don't stop making movies.

bagoh20 said...

Things like Uber reduce the number of cars, but not much effect on the number of miles driven, and actually increases it on single passenger fares as the driver drives around to bring the car to you when you would already have it with you. The problem with not having a car or a truck as I demand is that you can't carry anything, groceries, you dog, your meth lab, etc. We don't just need to get around, we need to hunt and gather.

If it were Ed Begley Jr. making this statement it would carry some actual weight. He at least talks the talk AND walks the walk. Riding a bike to the Oscars. http://edbegley.com/

When it is a holes like DiCaprio and Al Gore who are burning on a daily basis more carbon or whatever than the rest of do in our lifetimes, I can just safely thing STFU and ignore them.

If they were serious about climate change and "saving the world" they would sell all their huge houses, buy recycled clothing, never buy a new car or anything new, walk or bike to work or the grocery store, grow their own food in a small backyard garden. That would save tons of energy.

Instead we get lectured from on high and scolded. STFU indeed.

Why should he change his tune? Someone is eating this stuff up. What he says gets him good parts, gets him honors and awards, and gets him laid. Not bad for a high school dropout.

I agree he is hypocritical with his own energy consumption lifestyle/career. But would it change the substance of what he was saying if he lived like a hermit in a cave? Everyone is piling on him and maybe rightly so- but I am old enough to remember gas lines and odd and even days to buy gas. I think that energy conservation is an excellent idea for everyone. I think that atomic power is the future and we are way behind in the practical technology of building plants.
Coal and Oil are a lot cleaner than they used to be- but are still dirty and nasty and they are hard on the environment.

I guess that my real frustration is that there does not seem to be a conservative conservationist movement. And there should be, I’d support sensible regulation to protect the common good. Ducks unlimited sort of thing. But Exxon and BP do not need my tax dollars for exploration. Iowa farmers do not need my taxes, and Solyndra does not need my taxes.

I decided to do my part and not burn fossil fuels to watch his movies. When he gets on the bike powered projector and peddles his ass off, then I'll watch it. BTW, what's his exit strategy from Davos? Russian nuclear sub?

Walk the walk if you're going to lecture us. Sell your private jets and live in brown paper bag in the woods.

CO2 is not pollution. Recent studies are showing accelerated growth rates in temperate forests which are huge carbon sinks, and it's clearly due to higher CO2 concentrations, which have been 10 times their current level in the past when early primates were thriving.

Conservatives understand the need for regulation, but regulations have a high rate of hurting more than they help, as with the Department of Interior land use and forestry policy that leads to more severe forest fires.

Private owners generally manage land better than the government, because it's their baby, and their pension comes from that land, not from putting in the right forms, and kissing the right ass in a cubicle.

Regulations can do great damage, including the money spent which is taken from productive resources with little cost/benefit analysis. They need to be thought out carefully, reexamined, and dumped when they don't work, and we all know that never happens. Creating a regulation is like pushing a bolder down a hill, you have no idea what damage it will do, and there is no way to stop it with our politics and entrenching bureaucracy being what it is. Corporate welfare we all despise always starts with a regulation, and most of our problems of government overreach and waste started with someone saying "We just have to do SOMETHING!", followed by doing something stupid.

I'll say it again:

“Jumping from failure to failure with undiminished enthusiasm is the big secret to success.”

No, that's just failure, until you stop doing it.

Oh, if these enviro-dickheads ever saw how a batter was made, they'd shit themselves and go into a grand mall seizure.

I'm so glad to know that so many commenters here are so much more knowledgeable than your average celebrity on the subject.

I'm also really glad to know that personal commitment to one's own barely relevant, minuscule contribution to solving a massive, policy-necessary problem is the same thing as taking it seriously or even having a defensible stance on it. I mean, we couldn't take Newton seriously on that whole gravitation thing until he decided to jump out a ten-story building. Or propel himself into orbit. Science and public education always progress by personal example, don't cha know? That's why I couldn't take those smoking PSAs seriously with the twats who spoke by burping out of a tracheostomy at age 55. Obviously they couldn't be believed and should have just made a pro-smoking PSA instead.

My, aren't you a smart one. How many solar panels ever became "inoperative" before they produced as much energy as it took to make them?

Did we watch the same 30-second clip? He didn't lecture you. He lectured the oil/coal/gas industries. Are you a part of them? At best he lectured your willingness to give them a pass, but even that's questionable. He took his message to them directly.

Glad to see Leo catching up. I've long been a proponent of getting rid of fossil fuels. The best way, in my opinion, is to burn them.
