Great Moments in Mets History Volume 1

May 14, 1975 Shea Stadium Press Conference
"Hello. I am M Donald Grant Chairmen of the Board of the New York Metropolitan Baseball Club. We are gathered here today so our right fielder Cleon Jones can apologize to the people of New York. As you know he was discovered nude in a van down by the river with a woman who was not his wife. He is here to apologize publicly to me, the ball club, his teammates and most importantly the fans. Oh yes his wife too. Cleon what do you have to say for yourself."
"I is sorry. Berry berry sorry."
"Is that all you have to say?"
"What else do you want boss? I's sorry."
"Well I guess that will have to do. What can you do with these types. They can't all be like Wayne Garret. Ok that's it. I have to get on the phone. I have some stupid trades to make. Plus I have to make pancakes for Mrs. Payson and shave her hobbit feet."

New York Times says that the Jewish Temple was not in Jerusalem!

The New York Times is casting doubts on the location of the Temple. You know the one where the wall still exists and is one of the holiest places in the Jewish tradition.

According to the article:Within Jerusalem’s holiest site, known as the Temple Mount to Jews and the Noble Sanctuary to Muslims, lies an explosive historical question that cuts to the essence of competing claims to what may be the world’s most contested piece of real estate.

The question, which many books and scholarly treatises have never definitively answered, is where on the 37-acre site, home to Islam’s sacred Dome of the Rock shrine and Al Aqsa Mosque, was the precise location of two ancient Jewish temples, one built on the remains of the other, and both long since gone.

Those temples are integral to Jewish religious history and to Israel’s disputed assertions of sovereignty over all of Jerusalem. Many Palestinians, suspicious of Israel’s intentions for the site, have increasingly expressed doubt that the temples ever existed — at least in that location. Many Israelis regard such a challenge as false and inflammatory denial-ism.

“This is a very politically loaded subject,” said Matthew J. Adams, Dorot director of the W. F. Albright Institute of Archaeological Research in Jerusalem. “It’s also an academically complex question.”

So in the eyes of the Times it is doubtful that the Temple was to be found in Jerusalem? Where was it? Jersey?

This is the kind of thing I expect to hear from Reverend Wright or Al Sharpton or David Duke or Barack Obama. You know. Anti-Semites from the get go. It is part of the denial of the reality of Israel and the claim of the Jewish people to their historic homeland. Part and parcel of the current attempt to delegitimatize Israel and to destroy them as a nation and a race. The Big Lie to coin a phrase.

I mean they don't even believe the Wall exists! Who are do they think they are? Roger Waters?

Why nerds and lawyers should not control the world!

Did you hear the latest bullshit being pushed by liberal nerd lawyer assholes. It seems that Fantasy Sports betting needs to be regulated because.....I don't know....because it is gambling or something.

You must have been annoyed by going to your favorite website and having a pop up ad for Fan Duel or Draft King come up. Or you will be listening to the sports station and an ad for these fantasy league website comes upon between the ads for Viagra and Cars for Kids. These are the sites that you can sign up and draft players and compete in a fantasy sports league in baseball or basketball or more frequently football. They handle all the stats and you can win big bucks because a bunch of losers from all over the country are involved and they have big winning pots. It's like on line poker for morons who think they know sports.

The scandal that has the lawyer nerds panties in a twist is that some of the employees of the sites are playing on the rivals sites. They are using some of the tips they have picked up by watching the smart players on their site. It is called handicapping douche bags. When you go to the track you bet along with people who have a good record of picking winners. It is gambling you morons. In fact it is more like laying off bets by the bookie. In any event it is not illegal. They have more information than some but the playing field is always unequal. Some players have more info than others. Some are just smarter. You can't regulate every freaking thing. But the Attorney General of New York and some ambulance chasers have a class action suit and the whole thing is a big mess.

I bet these douche bags never put down a bet in their life. They were too busy studying how to rip off the working man who likes to make a wager while drinking a beer and watching Monday Night football. We need a law.

A law to outlaw lawyers.

Dawn of the Fred

After Fred became a Zombie he infected everyone. Sort of the same way Miss Kitty gave everyone Aids on Gunsmoke. He bit Wilma and Betty and Barney and even Dino. They would wander through cartoon town killing and eating the brains of  all the cartoon characters. They chowed down on Top Cat and Magilla Gorilla. Munched on Captain Crunch. They even parboiled Penelope Pitt Stop.

It was a bloodbath.

The only ones who were safe were the characters on Doonesbury. Since they were liberals they didn't have any brains to eat.

"Clemson University apologizes for serving Mexican food"

When cultural sensitivity misfires...
Everything was going great. Students were loving the food and festivities. Except for two students, who took to Twitter to voice their displeasure with the school's decision to host such a "#CUlturallyInsensitive" event.
While a few on Twitter were offended, the overwhelming preponderance of students registered absolutely no reaction at all. The one student who did respond to the Twitter complaints wrote, "I'm offended that you're offended. #CUfiestafiasco."
Clemson senior Austin Pendergist told Campus Reformhe felt the post-event uproar was “ridiculous.”
“This is something that Clemson Dining has done for years without any sort of backlash. People love the cultural nights in the dining halls,” Pendergist said. “What's next? Are they going to take away all potato based food as to not offend students from Irish decent? Remove the stir fry station so Asian-American students don't feel as if they are being misrepresented? When does it end?”
The university, however, took a different position. Dr. Doug Hallenbeck, Clemson University’s Senior Associate Vice President of Student Affairs apologized for the event’s “flattened cultural view of Mexican culture.”
It looks like the original tweeterer that took offence at the Mexican food festival has taken down the account or renamed it.

A Hillary gaffe or a hint?

Now the real answer to this is for gun-owners to form a different organization that supports the Second Amendment, supports their rights to own guns, use guns, go hunting, go target shooting, but stands against the absolutism of the NRA. You know, the NRA’s position reminds me of negotiating with the Iranians or the communists. There’s no possible discussion. And it’s for political purposes.
Setting aside the NRA barb, didn't Obama just negotiate a deal with the Iranians? A deal Hillary just claimed credit for a few weeks ago?
Or, like the Obama trade deal TTP, is Hillary hinting she is about to flip flop and come out against the Iran deal?

Friedersdorf on Ygleisias on Clinton

"“Clinton is clearly more comfortable than the average person with violating norms and operating in legal gray areas.”
-Matt Yglesias

...“More than almost anyone else around, she knows where the levers of power lie, and she is comfortable pulling them, procedural niceties be damned.”
-Matt Yglesias

...Yglesias’s opportunistic support for extraordinary, legally questionable uses of executive power and his dubious claim that “liberals need an iron fist in the White House to make progress” is a naked embrace of the process-be-damned logic that has been contributed to horrific government abuses in both recent memory and U.S. history. Against all that, Yglesias posits that aggressive, norms-violating uses of executive power can bring marginal gains to the domestic agenda of technocratic progressives.

...Why does he think that progressives should embrace that tradeoff? Perhaps his judgement is clouded by his status as a movement wonk: He is far more likely to be invited to a Clinton White House to share his policy views than to have its occupant bomb his ancestral village, surveil the place of worship of his family members, or send him to die in a foreign conflict where the U.S. does not achieve its objectives.

...For whatever reason, Yglesias is apparently blind to the fact that executive power wielded for foreign-policy and national-security purposes is far more consequential in terms of lives lost, money spent, and human rights abrogated than anything the left can achieve domestically through executive orders. This is partly because stupid wars of choice like Vietnam and Iraq are easily the most ruinous projects a country can undertake; and partly because starting wars, killing innocents, and violating civil liberties are irreversible acts, whereas a domestic agenda achieved via executive order could mostly be overruled by Congress or undone by the next non-progressive president."

Dawn of the Fred!

We thought we had seen it all with the Flintstones. The affair between Wilma and Dino. That dirty slut Betty Rubble. Barney shooting smack and falling asleep on the toilet. But what really ended the show was when a Zombie came over to the set and bit Fred.

So we have a new series.

Black Man Knocks out Black Cop in Baltimore because...Black Lives Matter!

There are a couple of things that are noteworthy in this video.

The woman officer is the training officer. She is in charge. The skell totally ignores her to beef with the trainee. She can't handle him and is in danger of having him take a gun from them and shooting them both. The "innocent bystanders" were filming the confrontation and made no move to aid the cops at all. They just wanted to get an incident on film to feed the narrative.

The Ferguson effect in all it's glory with a bonus affirmative  action glaze.

There is a cult of Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) that is as strong as any cult of personality in American politics. It’s just the people who eschew populism and conservative politics are the ones in the cult. And these people would never consider themselves part of a cult as they kneel in their prayer closets and thank God for Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) ,
Ryan is, to be sure, not a bad guy. But his cult of personality will make it problematic for conservatives should he be Speaker because everyone calls Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI)  a conservative and you are a loon if you think otherwise. In other words, House conservatives who might take issue with Ryan in the future will immediately be labeled as fascist totalitarians more willing to set everything on fire than work hard.
Personally, given Washington these days, I think the default should be to burn it to the ground (metaphorically speaking), but you know what I mean. Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI)  will give the veneer of conservatism to whatever he touches.

"Federal Employees' Wages Growing Faster Than Everybody Else’s"

"Pay freeze over, for government types anyway."
Only three worker categories have higher average wages than civilian federal government employees: company management, utilities, and mining. Even the high-demand information technology and finance fields offer lower average wages.
The latest data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) show that wages rose 2.9 percent in the federal government in 2014, on average, compared to 1.7 percent in the private sector.
When benefits such as pensions and health care are included, federal compensation increased 2.8 percent, on average, compared to 1.3 percent in the private sector.
Federal civilian workers had an average wage of $84,153 in 2014, compared to an average in the private sector of $56,350. The federal advantage in overall compensation (wages plus benefits) is even greater. Federal compensation averaged $119,934 in 2014, which was 78 percent higher than the private-sector average of $67,246.

To Wit: A Challenge And Invitation

That's Mr. Sardonicus on the right, from William Castle's 1961 film, "Mr. Sardonicus."

Sardonic: Why isn't there a noun form like "sardony"? The word sardonic is curious too and relates back to the island of Sardinia and what those people ate -- things like sardines: link

I get confused keeping the different forms of humor straight. Here's a handy guide I pulled from the linkable OED of English Etymology; the definitions come from H.W. Fowler's The Dictionary Of Modern English Usage.

That's a very cool table. I went looking for my copy of Fowler which I bought in college but haven't seen since I can remember. So I just went and bought a copy using Lem's portal. I want to discuss this topic (and that book) at a future date. If anybody else has the book or would like to buy it and follow along at a future date, please do.

Mrs. and Sen. Reid sue exercise band company

"Reid, 75, claims he was injured while exercising with the band on Jan. 1 at his Henderson home.
"The TheraBand was mounted to a sturdy object in his bathroom," according to the lawsuit. "While in use, the TheraBand broke or slipped out of Mr. Reid's hand, causing him to spin around and strike his face on a cabinet."

According to the document, Reid suffered "loss of vision in his right eye, a concussion, broken orbital bones, severe disfigurement and bruising to his face, hand injuries, facial lacerations, scarring, and broken ribs.""

So did it slip from his hand or did it break? That's unspecific language for a lawsuit.

I have never used these kinds of bands in an exercise program, but when I have stretched them, I always thought, 'how likely is it they will they break and hit me in the face?'

"Ivy League Prof Calls Ben Carson a ‘Coon’"

University of Pennsylvania’s Anthea Butler has also called God a “white racist.”
A professor at the University of Pennsylvania called presidential candidate Ben Carson a “coon” because he said he’s cool with NASCAR flying Confederate flags during races if that’s what its fans want.
“If only there was a ‘coon of the year’ award . . .” Religious Studies professor Anthea Butler tweeted last Tuesday in response to a tweet sharing a Sports Illustrated article about Carson’s comments.
Her post has since been deleted, but not before a screenshot of it was captured, according to an article in Campus Reform.
Something must have led this professor believe she could get away with that kind of barb against a distinguished African American.

Study: "Power decreases trust in social exchange"

Abstract
How does lacking vs. possessing power in a social exchange affect people’s trust in their exchange partner? An answer to this question has broad implications for a number of exchange settings in which dependence plays an important role. Here, we report on a series of experiments in which we manipulated participants’ power position in terms of structural dependence and observed their trust perceptions and behaviors. Over a variety of different experimental paradigms and measures, we find that more powerful actors place less trust in others than less powerful actors do. Our results contradict predictions by rational actor models, which assume that low-power individuals are able to anticipate that a more powerful exchange partner will place little value on the relationship with them, thus tends to behave opportunistically, and consequently cannot be trusted. Conversely, our results support predictions by motivated cognition theory, which posits that low-power individuals want their exchange partner to be trustworthy and then act according to that desire. Mediation analyses show that, consistent with the motivated cognition account, having low power increases individuals’ hope and, in turn, their perceptions of their exchange partners’ benevolence, which ultimately leads them to trust.

- When you are in a position of power you realize that others in power are human just like yourself and that they may or may not know what they are doing.
- When you're higher in power, you have more to lose.
- Could be that less trusting individuals achieve positions of higher power. Or maybe the road of power strips you of trust for others?
- Much in common with Stockholm syndrome. Pretty much every higher animal that lives in a group has evolved dominance hierarchies as a way fo avoiding continuous upheaval. Not to recognise these hierarchies by the very small things which symbolise them - posture, gaze, teeth displays and yawning, for example - can be fatal. Humans have very elaborate hierarchies and we are hard wired to recognise and respond to these. Hierarchs are good at emphasising this: sitting higher, in distinctive clothing, being heralded by trumpets, whatever.

"“Camping” On Your Own Land Is Now Illegal"

"In Costilla County, Colorado, there has been a major influx of off-grid residents to the San Luis Valley. The combination of lax zoning regulations, cheap property, and an already thriving community of self-reliant off-grid homesteaders has led to many new residents."
The off-grid lifestyle, enjoyed by an estimated 800 people, is now being threatened as county officials have recently made moves to essentially regulate and license the lifestyle into oblivion.

Tensions boiled over during a county commissioners’ meeting in San Louis, Colorado, devolving into a shouting match between homesteaders and police. One of the major points of contention is the county’s attempt to ban camping on your own property, in an effort to force the off-grid homesteaders back onto the grid.

“We are residents who have come to live off the grid. It’s all our land.” … “These are harsh economic times. We have nowhere to go,” twenty-year resident Paul Skinner said.

“We’ve been regulated out of life,” homesteader Robin Rutan told Colorado Public Radio. “I came here because I couldn’t live by the codes [in other regions].”

The county, which requires residents to have a camping permit to live in an RV, “small house” or other camp style home, has started to simply refuse the renewal of these permits.

This is obviously a major problem for homesteaders, who often live in such accommodations while building their permanent residents.

“They started enforcing the changes before they were actually made,” resident Chloe Everhart said.

Everhart said she performed due diligence prior to buying her land, with one of the most important aspects of the plan being a 90-day camping permit. Without a 90-day permit, camping on residential plots is only allowed for 14 days per every three months.

But just as Everhart was arriving, the board of commissioners instructed the planning and zoning commission to no longer issue camping permits.

In spite of her best efforts, Everhart is now an outlaw.

"I don't think it's got anything to do with American anger at the elites.

He (Trump) has no communication strategy -- except to be what he has always been, a nasty mean person criticizing people and doing, you know, silly kind of showman stuff. Where did he get a national reputation? From 'The Apprentice,'What did he do on 'The Apprentice?' He fired people."
It doesn't have anything to do with American anger, but Trump is famous for firing people. So for this Democrat it cannot possibly be the first thing he said leads to the last thing he said, they'e so angry they want everyone fired and Trump fires people without compunction, no, it must be something else. A mean vein.

He tapped a vein, you see, of meanness, that doesn't exist outside that one strange troublesome evil throbbing vein that Trump managed to pinpoint and tap.

This is huge Democrat supporter Barry Diller telling us why he does not respect Republican candidate Trump and delivering the hyperbole on why he'll be leaving the country if Donald Trump wins the White House, as we heard so many times in reaction to Bush and actually done under Obama, and readers are thinking as they read this attractive threat, "Don't tempt us."  Diller does exactly what Diller complains about in Trump. plank, eye, mote, etc.

Join the thousands of wealthy who already did just that, Diller, and it had nothing to do with Trump. Your loyalty and your affection for your country are showing.

Bloomberg

And for some reason Drudge finds this interesting enough to place in large typeface centered on his front page. Drudge wants us to know what this Democrat supporter thinks about a Republican candidate. Why? Drudge knows none of us care.

We'll wait to observe Drudge center front the opinion of, say, David Koch on Democrat candidate Bernie Sanders.

I believe Drudge is signaling time to get serious and stop messing around. Trump said something on an interview about conservative objection to eminent domain being based on their ignorance and their innate resistance to progress. I wonder why Drudge didn't link to that. Among the conservative writers I follow this is the latest daily Trump-damning revelation that must be talked about all night long. Each writer doing Trump eminent domain posts all night long. Like therapy. Until every aspect, every angle examined, every previous statement reexamined, and posted on and on and on through the night, a project is made of leading the pack away from Trump. It's obnoxious because Trump supporters cannot be budged and sensible people are just watching.

As if ANY of that could possibly matter to Trump supporters while Mitch McConnell and Boehner's protégé are still present, as stated so clearly and repeatedly, their intention is destroy the GOP. And can you blame them?

Baltimore City Mayor says Sun does not rise in the East!

Huffington Post (September15 , 2015) by Julia Craven
Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake sat down with MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell on Thursday to discuss the criminal trial against police officers accused of killing Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old black man who died from injuries he sustained in their custody, as well as the rise of violent crime in the city.
A judge ruled Thursday that the criminal trial against the six officers charged in Gray's death will take place in Baltimore. "It will be helpful, as we work to heal our city, that the public knows that jurors will be selected from the peers of the officers who work in the city, as well as Freddie Gray," Rawlings-Blake said of the decision.
The mayor also addressed the $6.4 million wrongful death settlement awarded to Gray's family on Wednesday. The Washington Post was the first to report that city officials had determined the dollar amount.
Baltimore's police union has spoken out against the settlement. The news "threatens to interrupt any progress made toward restoring the relationship" between cops and Baltimore’s city government, Lt. Gene Ryan, president of the Baltimore Fraternal Order of Police, told CNN.

"Biden himself leaked word of his son's dying wish"

"The vice president is mourning. He’s also calculating"
Joe Biden has been making his 2016 deliberations all about his late son since August.
Aug. 1, to be exact — the day renowned Hillary Clinton-critic Maureen Dowd published a column that marked a turning point in the presidential speculation.
According to multiple sources, it was Biden himself who talked to her, painting a tragic portrait of a dying son, Beau’s face partially paralyzed, sitting his father down and trying to make him promise to run for president because "the White House should not revert to the Clintons and that the country would be better off with Biden values.”
It was no coincidence that the preliminary pieces around a prospective campaign started moving right after that column. People read Dowd and started reaching out, those around the vice president would say by way of defensive explanation. He was just answering the phone and listening.
But in truth, Biden had effectively placed an ad in The New York Times, asking them to call.

California pushes gateway drugs

"California Governor Signs Bill To Legalize Physician-Assisted Suicide"
In a statement, Brown, a Democrat, said that he carefully considered the theological and moral implications of his decision.
“In the end, I was left to reflect on what I would want in the face of my own death,” said Brown, a former Roman Catholic seminary student. “I do not know what I would do if I were dying in prolonged and excruciating pain. I am certain, however, that it would be a comfort to be able to consider the options afforded by this bill. And I wouldn’t deny that right to others.”
Tim Rosales, a spokesman for California Against Assisted Suicide, criticized Brown’s decision, saying that for some patients, the cost of medical treatment could far outweigh the cost of assisted suicide.
“His decision was based on his personal background, as somebody of wealth and access to medical care, and that’s a very different background and a very different reality for millions of Californians living without that same access,” said Rosales, “These are the people who will be hurt by giving doctors the ability to prescribe lethal overdoses for patients.”

Angela Merkel clear favorite for Nobel peace prize

The winner to be announced next Friday. Although the nominations are kept secret an expert who publishes a shortlist of likely winners, someone who guesses well with inside information named Merkel as favorite.

National Review believes this is folly and says so and why. The piece is entertainingly scathing. Example:

Quoting from Bloomberg and commenting.
Chancellor Angela Merkel said Germany has to get used to the mass influx of refugees as she confronted increasing pressure from within her own party to limit the number of newcomers the country accepts.
Will have to get used to.

Authoritarians are what they are.

The writer has contempt for Angela Merkel, contempt for European union and its leaders, and contempt for Peace Prize committee. That's how I know you'll like it.

What we're seeing is nothing short of dissolution of Western culture. A pope discussing climate change and gay marriage while Christianity disappears from the Middle East even as the Middle East comes up and surrounds Rome. Merkel knows what she is doing, and not the "sad sack apparatchik" described. She knows the future of Germany rests on high immigration to support an aging population, her problem is spelled out quite clearly in numbers, and if that means less Germany and more Islam then so be it. It's that or perish. That is the choice informing Angela Merkel decisions about what to do and what not to do about immigration. The author is right, though, the committee cares nothing about any of that, this is their contribution to the great dissolution we witness. The squandering of birthright. So much of the movement of people initiated by our own politicians, our government's actions and its inactions. Our country really is partly, in many ways largely responsible and really is damned both for doing and for not doing.

A quick and easy guide to the Planned Parenthood Videos

This is recap by Mollie Hemingway at the Federalist.

Mollie presents an excellent summation, an excellent bookmark. How comeski? Why bother your wonderful selves with such horrors? Why keep brining up such a harsh unholy righteous-buzzkill topic of sadness and dispair? On a Sunday, no less. The clear facts so carefully assembled and thoughtfully given us to see and assess for ourselves are being actively denied by media. Our American corporate media is attempting to discredit these videos, the American media that insists all that you see is all you need know about videotaped Rodney King incident instructs their viewers disregard inculpatory evidence delivered achingly through ten excruciating videos.

For polemics. For review. A place to rearm. Power up. Mollie has the videos collected on one page with descriptions. Link to it, rub noses in it, drive a bitter point, what have you.

Spock: Take care, young ladies, and value your wine; Be watchful of young men in their velvet prime; Deeply they'll swallow from your finest kegs; Then swiftly be gone; Leaving bitter dregs; Ah, ah, bitter dregs. With smiling words and tender touch; Man offers little and asks for so much; He loves in the breathless excitement of night; Then leaves with your treasure in cold morning light; Ah, ah... in cold morning light.
Lt. Uhuru: What the hell is he talking about Captain.
Capt. Kirk: I don't know lieutenant. Please come to my quarters tonight. And be sure to be wearing your Black knee high boots and your Oscar Gamble.
Lt. Uhuru: You know it baby. I always said Bush is where it's at. Uh huh.
Mr. Sulu: Not from where I sit.

Joaquin

Picture from US Weekly, Joaquin memes go viral with looming hurricane Joaquin forecast.

I actually thought it was only me who thought of the actor every time the name is mentioned, and I'm not even film-fixated, so much as most everyone else? How dumb to not know this idea would already developed. Looking for photographs to use as source pics, it's true, the meme is already worked.

Had the world not beaten me to it, I would have used the Caesar photo of the actor sticking out his tongue dementedly during a gladiator fight and had that head spinning in the path of the storm getting bigger repeated as they do on the news.

midtone

For the race-obsessed party and their press tone is everything. SuperMexican put up a statement Obama is black because Democrats and media need him to be and this person is white because Democrats and media need him to be. We hear about and read about shades of color being important to so many for so long, about the words for specific degrees of skin pigmentation "high yellows" and the like, and percentages of racial heritage, "quadroons" and the like, I must say by observing it is Democrats and it is media that are tonality obsessed. And not just regular tonality. Mid-tonality. That's how specific the tonality obsession. In the US It MUST be reported this British person be white. It must. The British press has no such qualms. No such narration to insist upon. No such inherent racism pervading their reporting naturally with the ease of moving a slider.
