Mizzou: oh the humanity

"In an ironic development, to say the least, protesters at the University of Missouri (MU) segregated themselves by race Wednesday night, having white students leave a gathering in order to create a “black-only healing space.”

Supporters of the group Concerned Students 1950, which has spearheaded the protest movement at MU, assembled at the school’s student center Wednesday night for a meeting after a planned protest march was canceled due to bad weather. And then, according to activist Steve Schmidt, whites were asked to leave..."

---------------

Reminds me of the time Occupy Wall Street segregated along class lines.

Very bad optics for these students, but I give them a pass. I think the sense of oppression blacks feel, that manifests itself in hurt feelings and social anxiety, is real and justified. They don't trust the white students who stood with them not to harbor ingrained racism that they truly can't help, though they meant well.

A black only safe healing space? Sounds like the blacks want to bring back segregation. Fine by me.

Please. tell me you're not serious, because what you're saying is that burning witches was justified.

"They don't trust the white students who stood with them not to harbor ingrained racism that they truly can't help, though they meant well."

So whites are born racist, and nobody else is. I suppose even white infants would ruin a black safe space. Their aura is racist.

When they decide that Whitey needs shot, it's all cool. What else can a person do when faced with such oppression? Remember that such things can get out of hand real quick when truth and reason get tossed aside so that people can vent their anger uninhibited. This could turn into a bloodbath, and it will be those ignoring basic civil rights of some people for the childish unexamined emotions of others that will be at fault.

The last time they had a "black only healing space" in Missouri it was at the CVS in Ferguson.

I'm just afraid that kind of healing can get addictive. Too much of a good thing about and all that.

Bago, re burning witches, I'm so used to you making astute statements that a seemingly illogical one sticks out. Will you please clarify?

What I'm talking about is deeply societal, and I suspect buried in the brain. Fear of Other. Or as Haidt would put it, out group vs. in group. Or just as likely, purity vs. impurity.

Trooper, IMO we are undergoing the next stage in race relations. This is taking a new look at an old problem in the present context of uber mass communication, plus a 'sympathetic' black president.

Is my impression wrong that more cop killings of innocent blacks have occurred on Obama's watch? Not Ferguson, but others.

Trooper York said...

Yes you are totally wrong. The fact is when a skell has a gun and is shooting at police it is considered the "murder of innocent blacks." Michael Brown was not a innocent. He was a thug and a thief who strong armed a store owner and stated to fight with the cop to get his gun. That is the whole basis of "Black Lives Matter."

Methadras said...

So blacks are racists and they proved it. Again. Got it.

Oh no, leftist is a totally harmless ideology.

Why anyone would go to Missouri after this debacle is beyond me. They should close that school down and start again.

Isn't that exactly why they burnt (or more often hanged) witches, or jews, or gypsies? Most importantly, and more precisely my point, is that in both cases (witches and racist whites) the evil being attacking by going after these people was not real, but imagined. They take something small, a minor inconvenience or simple bad luck, and blame an innocent person, make that person "the other", and get them punished.

Of course some people will consider the problem real, but I don't find young people attending the most exclusive universities in the U.S., and living lives wealthier than 95% of people on earth and 99.9% of all who ever lived as being disadvantaged by anything. Does a lone poop swastika in a restroom that only one person ever saw and that can't be corroborated destroy all that reality. Can a single solitary person spitting out an insult, no matter what it is, ruin a person's self-worth if they don't want it too.

Facts matter, and the fact is that the people complaining are exactly the ones doing the offense, the ones robbing people of their rights, and excluding people from a community they asked to be in, that they often are not paying for, but which they believe they have a right to rule based on what they feel.

This is simple mass hysteria, and it's very dangerous, likely to get worse, and in bad need of being put down fast before it flames into serious trouble. They should have withdrawn the scholarships on the football players, but courage and principle are in short supply on campus.

Another point: These people protesting aren't afraid of White racists. Some are white themselves, and I'd be willing to bet that few if any of them have ever witness an actual act of racial violence perpetrated by a white person, but there is a very good chance they know someone killed by a Black youth. So don't tell me fear has anything to do with this. It's driven by greed - greed for power, attention and money, and victimhood is the scam used. It's greed with a side dish of pure racism and hatred that has been taught second and third hand, not experienced first hand.

Thanks for the explanation, bago. At first you said just withches, which are not real. I think. But racism in America is real.

Yes, I know blacks in America are luckier than most blacks in other places. But I think you are simplifying what it must be like to live your whole life with subtle of not so subtle racism all around. Like blacks being under more surveillance when they shop. You know the drill.

But it's deeper than just sucking it up. Once when I was at my daugter's black/Hispanic friend's house, I saw she and her sister had all white Barbies.

I agree this can definitely get out of control, but fingers crossed, it will mainly consist of some consciousness raising, but mainly it will just piss people off.

It appears there's a pic of the swastika released by university.

When I say fear of Other I mean on a deep, dark pyschologial, evolutionary level.

Trooper, I said NOT Ferguson.

Tawana Brawley shit faced and half in the bag. That was the beginning of Al Sharpton by the way. Who is going to be the new Al Sharpton coming out of this? I bet they are all lining up for the honor.

Deb, witches were real. They were living breathing people, and some were probably even practicing wiccans. They just weren't guilty of what they were blamed for. They were scapegoats, and people used them to gain attention and as excuses to hide their own personal failures. Some people used them as boogiemen to gain authority and power in their community. Identical to what we are seeing at these universities. If they taught real history at these places maybe these kids would realize what they have become, and how it's not new, special, or admirable. They might gain insight into how things like real oppression come to be, even among good people.

According to an article I read, administrators originally assumed it was anti-Semitic.

I'm not sure what the message even is if you draw a symbol in shit. Is that saying you are for or against it? See? It doesn't matter what the intent was. The value is in being offended. Why aren't the Nazis up in arms and demanding a safe place? Maybe they are.

deborah said...

I agree bago, but I think we're talking about two different things.

"But racism in America is real."

Yeah and so are hoaxes and the leftists who love them. The Federalist has looked into it, and the whole feces Nazi symbol at Mizzou is a hoax. No support for it at all.

Surprising. BTW, why do all these nooses, KKK members, and Nazi's all show up at Liberal Colleges, and almost no where else. You'd think that for every feces Swastika at a liberal college there'd be 10x as many in the outside world. but that doesn't seem to be the case.

There appearantly was a swastika drawn in poop, but nobody knows by who.

So:

"When it comes to investigating accusations of racism on campus, there are mountains of reasons for skepticism. . .

A plague of incidents involving falsified accusations of discrimination, often perpetrated by the accusers themselves, has recently become lamentably commonplace on American college campuses.

In order to combat the supposed scourge of “structural racism,” it seems that much of it has to be invented. A grossly racist flyer circulated on the campus of Ohio’s Oberlin College in 2013 sparked massive campus-wide protests and resulted in cancelled classes. The pamphlet repeatedly used anti-gay, anti-Jewish, and anti-black slurs, and demanded that all these undesirables be locked in “cages,” but it turned out to be the work of two liberal activists. One of the hoaxers was a member of the group “White Allies Against Structural Racism.” Worse still, the campus administrators knew that this incident was a hoax even as the classes for which their students were paying exorbitant fees to attend were being cancelled.

In 2012, a University of Wisconsin, Parkside student found herself on a racist “hit list” that included the names of a number of African-American students targeted for violence. That list appeared several days after two nooses made out of rubber bands appeared on campus. The incidents exploded in the news and became the focus of an investigation by the Kenosha County District Attorney’s office, but that investigation revealed that this student who originally exposed the plot was behind the whole affair. What gave her away was the fact that the only name on the “hit list” spelled correctly was her own.

The student activists on Vassar College’s Orwellian-named “Bias Incident Response Team” found themselves busy indeed in November of 2013. They were supposedly combating an epidemic of hateful and insensitive messages directed toward blacks, women, and the transgendered scrawled and spray-painted on student residencies. Guess what? The perpetrators of this act of bias were none other than the members of the anti-bigotry brigade themselves." ~~ Noah Rothman - Commentary Magazine

Of COURSE a lot of black people have a sense of oppression. They're informed that they're oppressed from cradle to grave. Constant messages coming at them from parents, teachers, peers, and of course, the media that they're unable to cope without help. When you hear that all the time, day after day, year after year, all your life, what do you expect?
