"After Bush’s re-election, Democrats were consumed with self-loathing. They hated the Middle Americans who rejected them, but they also wanted those Middle Americans to love them... "

...Democrats concluded “their party must speak in language familiar to, among others, the disaffected hog farmers of Missouri,” the New Yorker reported in May 2006.
Then along came Jim Webb, and a crew called the "Redneck Caucus." Webb had served in Vietnam. He’d been a Republican. He'd opposed the Iraq War but in this super-cool, tough-guy way. He had a campaign aide named Mudcat. Webb had written a book, Born Fighting: How the Scots-Irish Shaped America, about how his ancestors had stood up to tyrants of all sorts. GQ reported, “odd and romanticized as it sounds, Webb believes he came to Washington to represent the Scots-Irish, or at least their modern-day heirs.” The senator told Virginia voters he would “bring more people back into the Democratic Party. … People who will understand the basic message of what I call Jacksonian democracy, and that is that you measure the health of your society not at its apex but at its base."
That sounded nice enough, but it seems pretty clear Webb was only interested in one slice of that base. (The white slice.) As Anderson Cooper noted in the debate, Webb said in 2000 that affirmative action "has within one generation brought about a permeating state-sponsored racism that is as odious as the Jim Crow laws it sought to countermand."... Asked about Black Lives Matter, Webb said “every life in this country matters.” (Though: “I have had a long history of working with the situation of African Americans.")...
And then, at the end, when asked which of his enemies he was most proud of, Webb said, “I’d have to say the enemy soldier that threw the grenade that wounded me, but he’s not around right now to talk to.” The line did not land well. Maybe because it was a decade too late.
...In Tuesday's debate, though, Hillary Clinton highlighted her proposals that would undo some of her husband's signature legislation, including his draconian 1994 crime bill. She talked about “reforming criminal justice,” saying “we need to tackle mass incarceration.”

Webb used strong words comparing the effects of Welfare on the black population to "state-sponsored racism," likening it to Jim Crow. He could be useful to Clinton as point man on the subject, allowing her to distance herself from the subject with regard to the white middle class.
It would also be advantageous for her to attract the vote of the military, traditionally Republican, and also to allay any qualms that she resents men. I don't see a white/white ticket coming up, but I can see Webb as very helpful to her, with the possibility of  Secretary of Defense as his reward in the offing.

The problem with Webb is like many of the "Conservative" Democrats they're only "Conservative" when talking to the voters. When voting in Congress they toe the party line on every important issue. Webb, for example, voted for Obamacare. In fact, I don't remember him fighting Harry Reid on anything. Webb is also Pro-abortion.

If the Democrats were determined to speak to "the hog farmers of Missouri" after Bush's reelection, why did they present themselves to Middle Americans in the person of Barack Hussein Obama?

Here's the thing. I hear all the time that a Republican can not get elected if he doesn't get the support of the blacks or the Hispanics or women.

How does it follow that the Democrats don't need the support of the white working class and white men in general?

Trump had some interesting things to say about foreign policy.

He said that paying for defending everyone without them supporting us is a real bad deal.

Troop - the dems don't need the support of white working class and white men in general because women carry the dem vote.

I want to support Jim Webb but not as Clinton's VP choice.

john said...

And women, even if they are working, would never classify themselves as "working class" because the term is just too bluecollar.

Oh I understand that John. The Democrats don't care about the concerns of white men. Old White men are the worst thing you can be in their eyes. Especially old white. The root of all evil as it were.

So why should we give a shit about the rest if they can't even give the bare minimum to the people who built this fucking country.

Trump has the right idea. Fuck em if they can't take a joke. Deport the illegals. Close the borders. Make the freeloaders like Japan and Germany and the rest of Europe pay up or leave them to the tender mercies of China and Russia. You know that China and Russia will over reach. They will have the problems then.

Benign neglect. It is not just for Baltimore anymore.

Russia is showing the way in Syria. Let them spend their blood and treasure dealing with the towel heads. It certainly worked out great for them in Afghanistan and Chechnya.

Why should the flower of our youth to die in foreign climes to build nations for societies that can't pour piss out of a boot.

A guy like Webb could be Trumps vice president. They could legitimately form a third populist party.

That's not going to happen but it is interesting to think on it.

Jim Webb is a perpetually constipated shitbag racist that hides his racism in couched ways. How the fuck the DNC can call themselves the party of inclusiveness and diversity in the face of the shit show they presented last Wednesday with 4 old white fucks and one cankled aging criminal cunt harpy to rule them all, is beyond me. They lie to your fucking faces and their idiot sycophants just clap like seals that they heard something profound.

john said...

So you like him, huh?

ricpic said...

Tammany Lives!

Throw them a fish, those stupid seals!
Cliques in the back room, doing deals.
Hildabeast out front to rule them all!
Jim grunting hopelessly in a stall.

I will never understand what people see in him.

He's a blowhard who's turned his coat so many times nobody knows what he is.

If 2012 was an honest count(!), the Romster lost because of not enough white men. He took something like 1/3 of the Hispanic vote.

Russia is showing the way in Syria. Let them spend their blood and treasure dealing with the towel heads. It certainly worked out great for them in Afghanistan and Chechnya.

Why nobody could see why we had to go in.

Of course Chechnya is part of Russia, so they had to go in, but, yeah, the russkies have a talent for wearing out their welcome.

But, there are signs Poot's adventure is more show than go.

A guy like Webb could be Trumps vice president. They could legitimately form a third populist party.

FWIW Priebus is think along a similar line

Fuck em if they can't take a joke.

You're quoting Major Deakins now? Have you told Mrs Troop?

Thanks, rc was not aware of those things.

Meth, if you call him constipated one more time, you're banned from my threads.

Ed, the one source I looked at about Pootie-poot was an AP story in a Seattle paper. I heard 'round these parts the MSM is in the Dems' pocket...would take with a grain of salt. Interesting times.

Another reason he could be helpful to Clinton is his pro-gun stance...might draw in some men from the right.

Thanks to all...been a hell of a bad computer day.
