Jonah Goldberg: Islam reformer being ignored

"Addressing the assemblage of imams in the room, al-Sisi called for a "religious revolution" in which Muslim clerics take the lead in rethinking the direction Islam has taken recently. An excerpt (as translated by Raymon Ibrahim's website):"
"I am referring here to the religious clerics. … It's inconceivable that the thinking that we hold most sacred should cause the entire umma (Islamic world) to be a source of anxiety, danger, killing and destruction for the rest of the world. Impossible!

"That thinking — I am not saying 'religion' but 'thinking' — that corpus of texts and ideas that we have sacralized over the centuries, to the point that departing from them has become almost impossible, is antagonizing the entire world. It's antagonizing the entire world! ... All this that I am telling you, you cannot feel it if you remain trapped within this mindset. You need to step outside of yourselves to be able to observe it and reflect on it from a more enlightened perspective.

"I say and repeat again that we are in need of a religious revolution. You, imams, are responsible before Allah. The entire world, I say it again, the entire world is waiting for your next move … because this umma is being torn, it is being destroyed, it is being lost — and it is being lost by our own hands." I think there will have to be some kind of schism along the lines of the Sunna/Shia split before this happens, but this is what has to happen.

They need a reformation bad.

A very astute commenter on Twitter made this very point a couple days ago.

Reformation should include dropping the ban on drawing Muhammad.

It should at least be on the table.

Hear about the time Mohammed's wife called him a pedophile?

Mohammed responded "Pedophile is a pretty big word for a 9 year old!"

al-Sisi seems unlikely to be an effective "reformer" since he represents civil authority, which the Islamists expressly reject.

This assumes that all the assholes who are clearly getting off on the killing and oppression of others are doing it purely out of religious conviction, rather than just a desire to kill and oppress.

I think we need a Sociopath Island where we can dump them, and they can live among their own kind in love and peace.

Let's locate it offshore of French Guiana and populate it with butterflies.

JG: "What is clear, however, is that this is a big deal. Al-Sisi is doing exactly what Westerners have been crying out for since at least Sept. 11, 2001, if not before that. And yet his speech has been almost entirely ignored by the mainstream new media. The commentators and analysts at PJ Media have been all over the story, but there's been silence from The New York Times, Washington Post, the news networks and other major outlets."

Our MSM is more concerned with the size of Kim Kardashians butt, Katie Couric's pathetic love life, Hollwyood's sexiest man alive, the latest Hollywood award show, how the GOP are pure evil, and standard White House Copy including the big lie that GM has paid back all of the government loans. Breathless... reporting... of lard and lies.

...without even turning on the idiot box, I can assure you the mainstream press are falling all over themselves praising their god-king for the improved jobs numbers. Ignoring, or course, the fact that it is individual risk-taking that should be given credit and also ignoring the still much too low job participation rate.

Wow, what tremendous courage on al-Sisi's part.

Sadly likely.
