grasshoppers pop-up card

Grasshopper pop-up card is four pages of grasshoppers. The first page is a grasshopper on a blade of grass coming right at you. Its face is built on table with layered tops to give its face and body depth, the rest painted on the card.

A green wheat stalk is painted on the background.

The second page is a similar arrangement, except an entire bug is on a longer leaf that plops down extended forward from the card directly in font of the viewer with all six legs attached to the leaf. The second bug is winged. Also with green wheat painted as background.

The third page is a mature wheat field crawling with locusts. Presented as folding cereal box with slits to peer through and layers inside of the same background with cut out areas to see through. A stylized sun rises from between layers as the card is opened.

Fourth page depicts snakes eating grasshoppers. One of the snakes turns, the others attack a grasshopper.

More photos and larger, here

I can see someone thinking and saying so, grasshoppers and snakes are not a good theme for card intended for a birthday. It is a bias I imagine and one I imagine overcoming. It is the sort of thing my mother would say she does not get. Why bugs and snakes? It would be ruined because she could not get over the nagging question, why grasshoppers and snakes on a birthday?

I made a mistake when I mailed it, trying to assure a signature instead I caused the person to go to the post office, and I did not want that. I apologized. He answered, "It was totally worth the walk there and doubly a pleasure for getting art like this."

So it worked. Somebody liked it. He said it blew his mind.

"Islamic State releases new beheading video"

"The video identifies the victim as aid worker David Haines."

"The apparent beheading follows two posted in the past month by the Islamic State showing the executions of two American journalists, James Foley and Steven Sotloff. It has similar visual characteristics to those videos. In those videos, the insurgent group warned President Obama there would be consequences if the U.S. did not stop airstrikes against it in Iraq."  (read more)
Having delineated a strategy better known for what it purports it wont be, namely "boots on the ground", wouldn't more beheadings challenge the perspicacity of such a strategy?

I thought we were done with halfhearted, one hand tied behind our backs war waging.

ISIS Finds Fertile Recruiting Ground in NATO Ally Turkey

An unknown number of Turks – potentially in the thousands – are being abducted or lured into Syria and Iraq either to populate Isis’ self-declared caliphate or to fight in its bloody sectarian war.

Go Out and Play!

By KaBOOM.

$39.00 (29.00 elsewhere for the backpack alone)

What do you get? What's inside? What are the activities?

1) A book by the same title. About activities and games. The ultimate antidote to "Mom! There's nothing to do!

The book is rated highly on Amazon, 4.5 stars. By four people. One review that I thought had to be put on, too glowing and warm and positive, caused me to check who wrote it. The worst review is a woman who felt misled into thinking there would be more traditional games that she remembered.

Actually, I thought the idea is for a backpack of fun outdoor things. Like a pocket fisherman. Flashlight. Knife. Matches. Bicycle tools. Folded poncho. To change the association of backpack with books. And books are an indoor activity that you must go somewhere sit down and read and doing that is the opposite of go out and play.

I heard that phrase a lot. My tendency was to hang around and be a pest so I was told go out and play quite a lot. The other thing I was told repeatedly, "Stop running in and out." Those two together implied tacitly and received concretely, "Get out and stay out."

That can be the next activity book, "Stop Running In And Out!"

And the third in a series of activity books, "Get Out And Stay Out!"

The book is for adults and seeks to incite community activism. Looking inside, we see a series of suggestions and imperatives: Let's Get Started. Do this, do that, close a street for play. Build a playground. Rally your city to become a playful city USA. To be fair,  some 91 pages of outdoor games.

You can buy a new book for $10.25 or elsewhere for $6.49 + $4.00 shipping while options continue for used copies for 1¢.

2) Backpack.

3) Essentials Pack. 2 boxes of large sidewalk chalk, 2 jump ropes,  8.5" ball, frisbee.

I was hoping for more.

Michelle Obama teams up with KaBOOM! through her own initiative Let's Move that shares the same interests, the concern being childhood obesity, considered epidemic.

I must admit that... I must whisper this... I secretly applaud Michelle Obama's efforts even though I feel in every fiber that it is none of her biz wax. Then I realized she is not talking to me and never was. She is talking to somebody else. Get over myself. She is role model to somebody else.

To be clear, she just said, "The President and the First Lay of the United States joined millions to remember 911 with service by assembling backpacks with KaBOOM volunteers."

Honestly, the first thing I thought was Kaboom cleanser. And the second thing I thought was a children's television show called Kaboom. I do not have a problem with Kaboom + 9-11 association even as wisecracks about packing a pressure pot into them, sinister and macabre, pond-bottom level like Joan Rivers, have me falling around laughing.

Concurrently in the news, poll results show most Americans want to criminalize pre-teens playing unsupervised by 68%

Mixed signals here. Go outside, stay outside, read a book of activities, stay active, you are unacceptably fat, do not go to a park unsupervised.

Good luck sorting the conflicting imperatives to go out and play but never unsupervised.

I get Michelle Obama by realizing she is not talking to me, not about food, gardening, nor this, but she is talking directly to somebody else and that is the odd part, then, unseemly peering like this into a private conversation in a space where kaboom + 9-11 goes unnoticed. But honestly, we did know all that right off. Did we not? Looking back, nobody, and I mean nobody has a Christmas tree with Mao Tse Tung ornament least of all president of United States so that does tell you right off it will be insistently a different space being created a different language spoken with such odd phrases that invite satire in the terrestrial world, as "remember 911 with service by assembling backpacks with kaboom."

"Winners of high-profile smart gun design challenge are afraid to come out publicly"

"The Foundation received more than 200 applications, and by June it had selected 15 winners. But so far, only one winner has been announced: 17-year-old Kai Kloepfer, who designed a fingerprint scanner that fits on the handle of a gun and requires user authentication in order to fire. Kloepfer was awarded $50,000, which was announced yesterday."
More winners will be announced, the Foundation says, but some have asked that their names be withheld because of the controversy surrounding the issue.

"All the grantees have been selected, but as you can imagine they are at varying degrees of comfort with public exposure," a representative for the Smart Tech Foundation told The Verge. "Some have asked to remain almost anonymous because of the negative backlash they may face. So we will be announcing grantees on a rolling basis in an effort to protect some innovators and highlight others." (read more)
The technological innovative approach faces objections from both sides of the gun control argument. I'd imagine it partially threatens the relative safety of the status quo.

NYT OpEd: "Obama’s Betrayal of the Constitution"

"PRESIDENT OBAMA’s declaration of war against the terrorist group known as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria marks a decisive break in the American constitutional tradition. Nothing attempted by his predecessor, George W. Bush, remotely compares in imperial hubris."
"Mr. Bush gained explicit congressional consent for his invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. In contrast, the Obama administration has not even published a legal opinion attempting to justify the president’s assertion of unilateral war-making authority. This is because no serious opinion can be written." (read the whole thing)
The last thing Obama wants to do is to put it on paper, he doesn't want to put the ring on the finger. Salient that after the speech declaring war, Obama's advisors took to the air waves to contradict it.
Thursday on CNN's "The Situation Room With Wolf Blitzer," Obama White House National Security Adviser Susan Rice said the president's actions against ISIS are "very different" from America being at war.

Rice said, "I don't know whether you want to call it a war or sustained counterterrorism campaign. I think, frankly, this is a counterterrorism operation that will take time. It will be sustained. We will not have American combat forces on the ground fighting as we did in Iraq and Afghanistan which is what I think the American people think of when they think of a war. So I think this is very different from that. But nonetheless, we'll be dealing with the significant threat to this region, to American personnel in the region and potentially also to Europe and the United States. And we'll be doing it with partners. We'll not be fighting ourselves on the ground but using American air power as we have been over the last several weeks as necessary."
Is like after proposing to make Iraq and Syria his, Obama is going about doing everything he can to undermine it.

"...they defeated us."

That day past, anyone towel-head Arabs on 4 planes defeated our nation.

Seems silly, I know, but true, they defeated us past.
Since then we spent ourselves  bankrupt, allowed PC to defeat common sense, regarded with contempt the people who built this country elected a Muslim president who war on American people.
["Common sense is "CS" coming out of the forehead.
"Regard" is "look over," and "contempt" is look down. The two signs blend together.
"Who" is thumb at bottom lip with index finger circling around the lips like whipping up a little whirlpool. It barely shows.
"President" is a Texas Longhorn bull. Most likely Teddy Roosevelt. There is a one-handed way of saying bull.]

We are done. Enjoy the decline and be sure to name and shame everyone who voted for that metrosexual traitor. They need to be reminded today and every day.
["Decline" could be like a sliding board coming right at you.
"Shame" and ashamed are same as "embarrass". Sometimes "red" then cupped hand turning at the cheek as blushing. Akin to shy, coy, demure and such.
"Metropolitan" is roof roof, I alternate roofs and make a boxier town with skyscrapers.
"Today" is "now day"
"Vote" is similar to making tea]

Comment by some crackpot earlier. No wait!  I'm sorry. That is Sixty-Grit. Just kidding.  I visualized the phrases as I read them earlier and thought, oh, that's rather good. I like it when people speak and write such that I can see it.

This was too hard to put together. Too many files. Over a thousand. I just now erased them. Next time I'll just record myself. That would be a lot easier.

Ted Cruz: Hatred, Bigotry, Opposition to Israel Led to Me Leaving Event

"Tonight, in Washington, should have been a night of unity as we came together for the inaugural event for a group that calls itself 'In Defense of Christians.' Instead, it unfortunately deteriorated into a shameful display of bigotry and hatred," Cruz said in a statement provided to Breitbart News. "When I spoke in strong support of Israel and the Jewish people, who are being persecuted and murdered by the same vicious terrorists who are also slaughtering Christians, many Christians in the audience applauded.  But, sadly, a vocal and angry minority of attendees at the conference tried to shout down my expression of solidarity with Israel." 9/11 Open Thread

A place to post your thoughts about 9/11.

I remember learning about Rick Rescorla a few months after the attack.  He was a true hero.  Rescorla was VP of Security for Morgan Stanley / Dean Witter, and he foresaw how vulnerable top attack the World Trade Center was.  He made all the MS/DW employees practice emergency evacuation drills every three months.  On 9/11 he ordered everyone out of the Morgan Stanley offices after the first plane hit, making them sing out loud as they walked down flight after flight of stairs.

He got all 2,700 of his co-workers out of the WTC before the buildings collapsed.  After securing their safety he went back into a building just as it as it was collapsing to help bring out more people.  He died in the collapse.  He saved 2,700 lives.

A New Yorker essay here.  It is an excellent read.

Khufu

I forget now what I was looking at when incongruently I was shown this hieroglyphic.

The birds look like ibis or heron to me. Some kind of crane. The circle has a smudge in the center. The two birds could be identically poorly drawn, the scribble in the middle looks like "water."

All of that is wrong.

 Egret
 Ibis
Quail chick, this is what they actually are. The sound for "w" and sometimes "u."
The hieroglyphs are painted red, they are circled in a cartouche. So what pharaoh's name is "___ w  ___ w" or "___ u ___u"?

Turns out, the circle with a smudge is not "Re" or "Ra" as you can expect in a royal name, rather, it is that very odd sign that is not even classified, and guessed as "placenta." How they get placenta is beyond me. I never did like that answer. I have no idea how placenta is arrived at. But neither do they. The sign is not listed under "human parts of the body" instead it is classified under Aa for "unclassified." So, that is admission of not being sure. Let's call it a sieve instead. To me, the sign means "sieve" and not placenta. That's gross.

Phonetic designation, "ḫ" That's where you work up moisture at the bottom of your throat and make a gargling "kh" sound such as you hear in Hebrew, Arabic, and German.

The scribbly bit in the middle is not water.

Water, an "n" sound.

Nor is it a stick "ḫt," a kht sound.

"F," sound,  honed viper, sign for "father"

The cartouche is part of graffiti considered a hoax, due in part to its mistaken hieroglyphics but also because of monkeyshines by German anthropologists removing the portion, and did so at the point that they needed more funding. There are a lot of theories about what happened. So much hinges on proof that the pyramid was built at the time and for the person of Khufu.

This is what they are trying to draw.

The bird is different from all the others because its little beak is a mere thumbtack on the front of its head. It's head and beak are not drawn as the rest of the birds. It is different too in the parallelism is greater in the legs. Most but not all other bird's legs are spread. The owl's legs are parallel also but its face is oddly straight on. The owl = "m" sound, among other things, and this chick ="w" sound and often "u" sound, so, both very common birds. Nobody painted them as hieratic scribbles that early. Hieratic writing came much later after Khufu as scribes really couldn't take all the serious bird differentation anymore and began scribbling a sort of shorthanded cursive.

When you see the name printed clearly like this there is no mistaking Khufu. It jumps right out at you. The simplicity of it with two quail chicks gives it away, and the circle that is not the sun sign confirms the name Khufu.

Roger Goodell: “My job is to protect the integrity of the NFL”

"Depending on viewpoint, the NFL was either unable despite its vast resources to procure the same video from the Revel Hotel and Casino that TMZ somehow acquired and published. Or, as TMZ reported Tuesday morning, the league simply never asked for it in an effort to ferry out a lighter punishment for Rice."
Goodell, in the CBS interview, said league officials asked Atlantic City authorities for “anything pertinent” after seeing the initial security footage, which showed Rice pulling Palmer into the hallway during last February’s altercation.

“We are particularly reliant on law enforcement. That is the most reliable. That is the most credible,” Goodell said. “We don’t seek to get that information from sources that are not credible.”

"The cologne started the part of my story that is much harder to tell"

"One Saturday afternoon a few months after our first date, I opened one of the cards and then smelled it as he beamed on proudly. I sniffed and joked “like a woman” because he was the first man I ever knew to send a scented envelope."

"I know it’s a cliche, but if I close my eyes, I can still see that moment in slow motion. His face changed from beaming to furious. And suddenly, I was on the floor. It wasn’t until he extended his hand down to me saying, “Oh baby I am so sorry! Why did you have to say that? I’m so sorry!” that I realized I was on the floor because his fist had put me there. I actually thought for a second that a piece of the ceiling must have fallen down. Surely Hank couldn’t have hit me? That was something that happened to other people." (read more the whole thing)

News From Down The Lane

The news is that autumn returned this week, about two weeks ahead of schedule.  The conifers have started dropping cones and needles; and the leaves on some of the more timid hardwoods have begun to turn colors.  The red oaks and sumacs are part-way through color change. Other hardwoods will soon follow, as overnight temperatures have been unseasonably cool.

Autumn brings with it a natural rhythm of events, both human and natural.  Young humans have returned to the rhythm of the school day, of riding yellow buses, of maintaining a regular schedule.  Student athletes have resumed the rhythms of practice and game day.   The new soccer complex in town has full fields after school, and all weekend.  The cross country runners are practicing on the rural roads and golf courses after school, and holding their meets in parks Saturdays.  The football players are on their field after school, and the grandstands are full on Friday nights.

Our part of the northwoods is lightly populated, so away games can mean an overnight stay.  Some high schools in our conference are more than two hours away, and when snow threatens, the athletes bring an overnight bag in case the buses can't travel back home after the game.  We haven't had snow yet, but it won't be long before we do.

Older humans are in their autumn rhythm, too.  Hunters are building tree stands, truing the aim of their rifles, and practicing their bow skills.  Bow hunting opens this week, gun season opens in November.  Deer hunters are wearing their hunting clothes around town, a ritual that helps eliminate laundry scents that might spook deer or bear.  Hunting clothes won't be washed now until after the season ends.

We are in our autumn rhythm here at the cabin.   Our woodshed is only about half filled with cut wood, and I've called the woodcutter to deliver three cords.

The back half is still full, but we'll probably exhaust it over the cold months.

The firewood that we thought had been borrowed last winter during the propane shortage hasn't been replaced.  I had hoped that the people who took it would replace it over summer but that hasn't happened.  We aren't always here, and the firewood can't be locked up, so there is that risk, I suppose.

We got hit hard last winter by propane prices that increased more than four hundred percent in two months.  Our autumn rhythm this year included pre-paying for a winter's worth of propane at prices that are locked in.  We might be overpaying by $.20 per gallon, or underpaying by $4.00 per gallon, who knows, but at least our price risk has been managed.  If prices again increase to $5.00 per gallon, I'm locked in at $1.75.

The other early autumn  activities are done.  The boat motor has been winterized, the touch-up caulking has been done, the insect poison has been sprayed around the buildings, a few trees have been trimmed, and a contract has been signed to tear off and replace the very old shingle roofs on two outbuildings.

Chet has plowed our drive for the last 20 years.  He isn't sure if he'll do it again this winter because he's 81 and has had two hip replacements.  He worries that if his truck gets stuck he won't be able to dig it out, or walk out for help.  And he says "I ain't gonna get me one of them damn phones" to take with him in his truck.  If he decides that he isn't going to plow, he'll give my name to one of his nephews who plows snow, and he'll keep the driveway clear.

The Messengers

A few weeks ago I was driving home from my night classes and discovered that modest little "Molly's", a bar along my route, had been transformed into "The Last Supper Bar and Grill".  Big neon sign and a string of lights that no little bar could ever afford.  I'm told that Molly believed that men should go home to their families so that the bar has always closed by 9pm, so filming later seems like a great way to make some extra cash.  Good on Molly's.

The location signs on the road all say "EYE" (Breaking Bad was "Br/Ba" as chem symbols)... so I had wondered what EYE was supposed to stand for.  Turns out it's a CW television show called "The Messengers."

It sounds completely horrible.

I might have to watch it, though, to see if I catch the scenes they shoot at Molly's.

"Reddit Declares Itself a ‘Government’"

"In response to the rapid growth of the /r/TheFappening subreddit, (where celebrity nudes were posted) Reddit CEO Yishan Wong took to the official Reddit blog to explain why they would not be shutting it down. In the post, called “Every Man Is Responsible For His Own Soul,” he said:
The reason is because we consider ourselves not just a company running a website where one can post links and discuss them, but the government of a new type of community. The role and responsibility of a government differs from that of a private corporation, in that it exercises restraint in the usage of its powers.
If that sounds like grandiose language for a social network, consider that if Facebook were a country, it would nearly be tied with China for the highest population. Consider that everything from political organization to the way we move money is tying itself to social media... (read more)

Shortly after Mr. Wong’s post went up, r/TheFappening was, in fact, shut down, and probably for the best. One minute it stays, the next it’s gone. It could happen on any community, at any time, without explanation. After all, even if Reddit can be called a government, what we can’t call it is a democracy.

Holder Aide Mistakenly Calls Congressional Investigating Committee In Efforts to Undermine It

"The aide, Brian Fallon, is a former senior aide to Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and a well-known personality on Capitol Hill. The letter describes Fallon as “audibly shaken” when he realizes his request to leak documents to help get ahead of news stories about them was mistakenly made to the very office he was seeking to undermine. Issa believes the call was intended to be made to Democratic Rep. Elijah Cumming's staff, the ranking member on the oversight panel, the letter said."

According to the letter, Fallon – who is not named in the letter but confirmed he made the call – asked if the aides could release the IRS scandal documents to “selected reporters” to give Fallon an “opportunity to comment publicly on it.” (read more)

"Once you hear them, it has an effect on you"

"Numbers stations and use of shortwave have declined after the Cold War, but there are still transmissions heard every day – the shortwave decline has not been as pronounced as one would expect. Part of the reason for this is that it is a secure means of one-way communication. Since the airwaves are being released out into the ether – the intended recipient is completely untrackable. Presumably, spies would carry a one-time pad, which would have the encryption code to be used (ideally) for just one broadcast (hence one-time). This makes decryption from pedestrians and enemies nearly impossible unless that one-time pad is misused or corrupted."
Almost all of the information we have on these numbers stations is due to hobbyists listening, sourcing, and sometimes attempting to decode the stations with their own radios. The communities of hobbyists are vast – and their logging can be prolific. There is the Spooks Spy Numbers Station Mailing List, the Conet Project (which compiles recordings of shortwave), the Spy Numbers Station Database, and many others. They keep track of the frequency, the time, the numbers, and sometimes record audio each time spooks hear a Numbers broadcast. These shortwave enthusiasts sometimes spend hours trying to locate the source of these broadcasts – sometimes, to no avail. (read the whole thing)
Before we had a black and white television, we had, I should say my father had a short wave radio. No one was allowed to touch it. It was truly fascinating to a kid like me to hear a station say where they were broadcasting from and then find it on a map in a geography book. The cleanest most reliable broadcast was from a station in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Do you have any short wave radio stories?

Clinton, Bush Laugh While Launching New Program

"George W. Bush was known – and often criticized – for being insular during his eight years in the White House, but he made regular calls to a surprising adviser during his second term: his predecessor."

"Bill Clinton revealed on Monday that the second President Bush picked his brain twice a year for 30-45 minutes, in wide-ranging conversations that no doubt set the stage for the surprising, "brother-from-another-mother" relationship that the two ex-presidents now share."

"Serious respiratory illness hits hundreds of kids"

"Hundreds of children in more than 10 states have been sickened by a severe respiratory illness that public health officials say may be caused by an uncommon virus similar to the germ that causes the common cold."

"Nearly 500 children have been treated at one hospital alone — Children's Mercy in Kansas City, Missouri — and some required intensive care, according to authorities."

Where are the "unaccompanied minors" that have not been sent back to their country of origin?

Exit question...

The thing is, Udall presumes to speak for dead people. Imagining their political views would match his own, and would say so if only they were alive, and that opens the floodgates for people imagining Democrats being so knowledgeable about what dead people would agree with, would say, how they would vote. It is unseemly.

Wherever the wind blows the taxpayers get fleeced

"The main federal handout for the wind energy industry has grown considerably despite the fact that it expired at the end of 2013. Over the past two years, IRS administrators have relaxed the eligibility requirements to make it easier for in-progress wind farm projects to qualify for government subsidies (known in Washington as the ‘production tax credit’ or “PTC PTC”). The IRS has done so repeatedly and quietly, often without action from Congress."

"Back in December 2012, while Senate Minority Leader McConnell and Vice President Biden were negotiating a last-minute deal to prevent income taxes from rising across the board, special interests in the wind industry engaged in a flurry of lobbying activity. Congress slipped in a provision in the Fiscal Cliff at the 11th hour that extended and greatly expanded wind subsidies through lower eligibility requirements. Previously, wind farms had to be placed in service and generating electricity in order to claim the credit; after the Fiscal Cliff deal, they only had to be in the beginning stages of construction." "Time for the Libya mea culpas"

"Well: Libya is a nightmare. A humanitarian intervention has led to a humanitarian crisis.

So: you guys want to step up and talk about why you were wrong? I mean I don’t expect the real Samantha Power warmongering types to admit they were wrong. But can we get a little social pressure for our political class to own up to the fact that they were wrong, please? You guys want to weigh in, here? Zack BeauchampSpencer AckermanJuan ColeJon ChaitGarance Franke-RutaJohn JudisChristopher Hitchens, I’m sorry to say, is no longer around to apologize. But how about you,Fareed ZakariaJohn HeilemannAndrew Sullivanat least– and his readers– are getting frank about the damage done. But Shadi Hamid, how about you? Anne-Marie Slaughter, we already know, is beyond helping. The whole New Republic will never stop being wrong about war. And Jeffrey Goldberg has built a career on being wrong but acting really pompous about it. But you, Peter Beinart? You have another of those brooding apologies in you? Matt Steinglass, still feeling good?
...You guys. The people who want to make things better. The people who think there should be accountability in punditry. The ones who think professionals should take responsibility for their professional work. This is where it happens, or it doesn’t. Either the community that is the elite political media pressures people to examine their support for this failed intervention and in so doing perhaps gain insight for the future, or it doesn’t. But this is where it happens. This is where the rubber meets the road. So what are you guys gonna do?"
