AllenS ,assuming you have a big screen, buy a bluray player, they play dvds as well.
For dvds and blu-rays, check out your public library. If Wisconsin is anything like Illinois the whole State library system is at your disposal. The libraries here had a better selection than netflix.

I want to buy a dvd player for my new flat screen (Vizio) tv. Any suggestions?
I've had a Sony since the late 90's. Never had an issue with it.
They can always go with Lingam as an alternative.
