Nancy Pelosy: What GOP wave?... Who is Gruber?... (Who am I, Why am I here?)

I do not believe what happened the other night is a wave,” Pelosi said in her first sit-down interview since Democrats lost a dozen House seats to Republicans on Nov. 4. “There was no wave of approval for the Republicans. I wish them congratulations, they won the election, but there was no wave of approval for anybody. There was an ebbing, an ebb tide, for us.”

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has joined in with the White House’s attempt to distance itself from a key figure in the creation of the Affordable Care Act who claimed the bill was passed with help from “lack of transparency” and “the stupidity of the American voter.”

MIT professor Jonathan Gruber — who assisted congressional staffers in writing the bill — made such claims last year during an academic conference, but the video only became widely-viewed this week. He has since appeared on MSNBC to call the comments “inappropriate,” but did not deny his underlying point.
"As for whether she would consider stepping down as minority leader, Pelosi said she’s needed now more than ever."

Chip Edit: Nancy says what?

New York Times holds inconvenient truths about the architect of Obamacare.

oops.

If only we had an honest press.

...If Mr. Gruber qualifies as a health expert despite his self-interest, then the studies of self-interested businesses deserve at least as much media attention. The insurer WellPoint has built a very detailed and rigorous model on the likely impact of ObamaCare, using its own actuarial data in regional markets, and found that insurance costs will spike across the board. The White House trashed it, and the press corps ignored it.

This is a double standard that has corroded much of the coverage of ObamaCare, with journalists treating government claims as oracular but business arguments as self-serving. We'll bet Messrs. Orszag and Brownstein that WellPoint's analysis will more closely reflect the coming insurance reality than the fruits of Mr. Gruber's government paycheck.

I believe her. She admitted she didn't read the bill before voting on it and you know damned well she hasn't read it after. She likely doesn't know who wrote it, what it does, what it cost, if it will work. I doubt she ever read the Constitution either or has any idea who wrote it. She does however know where and how to get her hands on money, and that's why she is where she is. She doesn't even know who is President judging by her description of him and the job he's been doing. I suspect dementia, magic mushrooms or both. This all makes her a perfect Democratic politician.

Oh, and she lies..... a lot.

I'm only saying that because she's a woman, by the way. If she were a man she would have to hire some man to do that for her.

Congressional elections are local. The animus against the locally elected leader of one of their factions is unseemly and bizarre. San Francisco didn't vote Pelosi out of of office. If they, as one of the richest and certainly most industrious districts of our country think she's good enough for them, I think they're entitled to their say. And the less successful losers in the pan alley of America can suck it. Come up with your own tech sector to lead the world economy and beautiful tourist attractions. Until then, your resentment stinks.

Unknown said...

Rit - why then are so many dems turning on her? When you've lost Jon Stewart....

CA's 12 district isn't the tech sector. The actual tech sector (or silicon valley) is further south, stretching into San Jose.

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

What do you mean "so many Dems". The people that vote for her are her district. Jon Stewart says whatever he can pull out of his ass to fill the next nightly twenty minutes of his own moral superiority. (Colbert's much better. Even John Oliver).

District 16 doesn't seem to have turned Republican red, and I think the general ethos of the Bay and Valley aren't that different. It's free thinking that defines the quirks of both S.F. and the nearby tech industry. Let's not pretend they're in a political grudge match with each other.

Amartel said...

San Francisco is mainly made up of rich progs and their lackeys. The lackey class is comprised of people employed by rich libs, including government workers, and people beholden to rich libs for handouts and thus compelled to put on the prog face of their choice and perform. Techies live there but everyone in SF hates them for "gentrifying" the charming dumpsters and putting out couch fires.

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

Certainly no cruder caricature could be made of the rest of the country, Amartel.

Nearly any part of California is a thousand times better than than nearly any other part of America. And again, I love how wealth is suddenly bad to the retrogrades when it's "liberal wealth".

And again and again, if you hate all that wealth then why can't you get the "techies" who feel so supposedly reviled to move to the flyover red? Oh, that's right. Because flyover red sucks ass and has nothing there at all. No venture capital. No glory. No grand visions of the sort that made tech as successful as it is. Small-minded people with small aims in life. And METH!

But let's bash the visionaries of the 2nd industrial revolution and their hosts and cultural benefactors. Yup.

Talk about resentment.

No one disputes CA is a beautiful state with a fantastic climate. The blue model killed it, but it's still a nice place despite all the blue-kill.

I think I heard recently that Silicon valley is tiring of the blue model. Also, what is the rate at which CA businesses flee the parasitic nanny big-gov state?
Just curious.

Unknown said...

Disparaging fly-over is fine by me. CO sucks. Tell all your friends.

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

Oh yep. The blue "model" is such a killer. People are running away. Even Silicon Valley. Google, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, social media, Apple, etc., etc,. etc., they're all done. Simply can't recruit the kind of dynamic intelligent people with such bright ambitions to come to CA for that. They're all moving to Nebraska and Arkansas. Grey clouds and meth are what the kids want. Not glamour, youth, openness and new thinking.

R's keep saying the left resents the wealthy. No, I think it's the right that resents the wealthy. Especially real wealth made by the sort of real innovation that actually interests people and moves the world forward. Projection.

The dumbest voters in the nation.

I mean just look at who represents us and brings us all that failure despite having weather that brings successful high taxpaying idiots like me to be fleeced. Believe me - we don't like it,and if the weather changed the state would go bankrupt overnight. Oh wait, we are bankrupt.

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

Oh yeah. No one can start a business in California. Just put enough boilerplate rhetoric in the assumption ("nanny state") and presume that businesses are unable to exist in the most dynamic economy thriving today. What cognitive dissonance.

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

Keep importing your engineers, then. Take the best. Schwarzenegger's the one who fucked the education system, anyway. What's that? Jerry Brown didn't turn around the failed budget overnight? Oh, well, as with POTUS let's call him out for not fixing Republican disasters as quickly as they could create them. And let's pretend that private citizens even give a shit about the state budget.

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

Republicans think Democrats are a failed party because they can't fix Republican disasters as quickly as Republicans can create them.

But of course the dopes in SF can vote in anyone they want to, and more power to them. But we also get to criticize and/or laugh our asses off that they picked such a liar, and an inept one at that.

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

Any state that's not denying the teaching of history to its students (Texas) or denying evolution to its students (Kansas) is better than 49th place in its education system.

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

I'm usually never bitter. I have from time to time things in my life that nag me besides politics, but I just think there's no reason to not call out the absurdity of a "prosperity" party bashing the regions of the country most adept at creating durable wealth.

I just want to understand that mentality, is all.

Unknown said...

You are free to live in denial about what punitive regulations punitive taxation and over-bearing government health care mandates do to a company attempting to turn a profit and hire people.

You are free to blame creationists and republicans. The problem with your theory is that many of these blue areas are on the decline. Sure SF is hyper wealthy - it's also a toilet. The infrastructure is in decay and even the financial district in SF is in recession.

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

Boilerplate boilerplate boilerplate boilerplate let's bash a proven and vastly superior environment of wealth creation and innovation any way we can boilerplate boilerplate boilerplate.

You really will say anything to persist in a partisan point, won't you?

The desperation is probably good for Republicans, though. Now you're even trying to tell me they care about infrastructure. That's funny.

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

Next you'll tell me that not only do Republicans care about infrastructure, but about the environment. Maybe even science. Lol.

Or about preventing disastrous bubbles of financial speculation.

Well, it looks like at least the script's changing.

Amartel said...

Just reporting the facts. SF is run by fat cat progs for fat cat progs. It's unaffordable and practically unliveable. In no way do I resent people who've made their own way, that's clearly not the issue. I feel badly for the tech execs who move there, buy property, contribute significantly to the tax base and are met with unreasoning rage and resentment from people who were promised a lifestyle that is unattainable for them, inconsistent with their skills and contribution to society, only to see that lifestyle being lived out right in front of them by interloping newcomers. SF is a actually a very provincial, stuffy, prissy little town, a closed society that gets very dull very fast. The only asset is the extraordinary beauty of the city and surrounding area. Everything else, all that private income, and imported culture, can pack up and leave anytime. And does. I'll be retiring (maybe) to the peace and less world-renowned, but no less present, beauty of "fly over" country, away from the sanctimonious asshats who run this place.

Amartel said...

You don't have the first fucking clue what you're talking about and as usual rely on misinterpreting other peoples' comments and repeating tired talking points

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

I'm the one relying on talking points? Lol. You can't get a sentence out without repeating "fat cat progs" but I should supposedly look to your example for non-partisan facts of any importance.

BTW, bridges are a bit harder to keep up in an earthquake-prone area. And in one that's experiencing explosive growth. But I guess if you actually knew what you were saying you'd have known that.

April April said: CA's 12 district isn't the tech sector. The actual tech sector (or silicon valley) is further south, stretching into San Jose.

That is correct. Ritmo doesn't actually know much about CA politics and geography. I wonder if he's ever even spent much time there. Before moving to San Diego in 1998, I lived in Sunnyvale and worked in Mountain View for two years. But enough anecdote. Pelosi's constituents are the urban San Franciscans, akin to Manhattanites. There was banking wealth up there well before any tech boom. That is where Pelosi wealth came from.

chickelit said...

When you're old school banking wealth, you sit around feeling guilty a lot which is what drove old school liberals. The tech sector is younger and more egalitarian.

For all his vaunted philanthropy, has Bill Gates ever written something along the lines of Andrew Carnegie?

Man must have an idol and the amassing of wealth is one of the worst species of idolatry! No idol is more debasing than the worship of money! Whatever I engage in I must push inordinately; therefore should I be careful to choose that life which will be the most elevating in its character. To continue much longer overwhelmed by business cares and with most of my thoughts wholly upon the way to make more money in the shortest time, must degrade me beyond hope of permanent recovery. I will resign business at thirty-five, but during these ensuing two years I wish to spend the afternoons in receiving instruction and in reading systematically! link

Maybe Bill Gates is so "generous" for tax purposes and tax purposes alone? Remember that Carnegie lived in time before income tax.

I stated years ago on Althouse that Europeans see Americans like Americans see Californians like Californians see San Franciscans. In other words, we all look elsewhere to blame shift but it is curious that the shit rolls downhill towards the Bay area.

Hopefully, San Franciscans can complete the "turtles all the way down" meme thusly:

Europeans see Americans like Americans see Californians like Californians see San Franciscans like San Franciscans see Pelosi.

Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.

Chip Ahoy said...

April Apple, those statistics are contrary to my experience. I attended two schools in Louisiana, and although not particularly well funded they were particularly good schools. Public schools in both cases.

In the 8th grade we did incredibly hard stuff. Maths were excellent. Sports was well rounded but not especially well funded.

Then at Bossier High in Shreveport my classes were packed and quite difficult. That is where I met Elaine right off. A beautiful blond who for some reason the boys avoided. I approached her at her desk and learned right off the reason why. She repulsed all males on purpose. Drove us off with her searing cutting wit. She was pulling in straight A's to my dummkopfery straight C's and occasional D.

I asked her, how does she manage this outstanding feat?

She said, "Well, first I take notes."

So did I . Doodles actually.

Then at home I rewrite them so they are more legible.

I did not do that.

Then I read the textbook entirely.

!

"You actually read that thing? I thought it was a prop. An object to carry back and forth. Something to burden me, for me to take care of for the term. Like an egg."

"No. I read it all the way through."

"Jesus Christt, what an amazing discovery! I'm going to do that too." I copied her alien ways and immediately began pulling in A's. All because of Elaine Stotko, daughter of Major Stotko who used psychology on his kids unlike my dad who used harsh abusive punishment to keep us in line.

When I transferred to Colorado schools as Freshman I already had all required classes to graduate. The only thing I needed was more electives. The school was much better appointed, among the best appointed schools I've attended out of twelve. Colorado standards were much lower than Louisiana, a complete breeze by comparison. I did not apply myself at all even though most my electives were in maths and science or else it would have been a total waste. Colorado schools had much more free activities bull poo, like football rallies and such, things that were easy to ditch. I sailed through and made great grades besides. Colorado was much much MUCH more easy than Louisiana. Louisiana teachers were utterly dedicated to teaching, this was obvious even to me as a child. I have no idea how they calculate these things, but by my experience their comparisons are bogus. Louisiana was rated the same way then too.

Unknown said...

Texas is also 49th.

The point is that it's all a big lie. It's all a production.

Unknown said...

Why Chip you must be dreaming because Louisiana ranks 49th!

I'm glad you were able to cross paths with Elaine Stotko and acquire mad study skilz. I too had lousy study skills and can relate to your feeling on the existence of text books.

CO public schools are kinda lousy in spots. I attended a few. My folks removed me for a while and sent me across town to a private school, where I excelled. Then I transferred back to public and it was mostly lame. Mr. Murphy at A-West was great and another female teacher (cannot remember her name!) whose appearance was frightening to us all - but turned out she was such a fantastic teacher of Tragedy and Shakespeare we all feel in love with her.
