The mother also complains that in order to get her daughter’s hair cut, she has to travel to a black neighborhood, “where she is obviously different in appearance, and not overtly welcome.”

I knew a white woman who moved into a gentrifying black neighborhood and got raped by a home-invasion black guy so I'd say this plaintiff got inseminated the easy way, rather than the hard way.
Lets look on the bright side.
At least the baby will be eligible for reparations.
Uniontown, eh? Where I grew up towns with "Union" in their name were renamed during the recent unpleasantness between the states so as to express their Y*nkee sympathies.
Makes sense that a town so named would be a hotbed of racial hatred.

See, her account at the sperm bank had grown to accrue a respectable return, even with low interest rates offered by banks, so that when she made a deduction the amount was withdrawn from a common fund.

If what I've read is correct, they are a lesbian couple. So, hell, they should be all about diversity and acceptance, and perhaps even overjoyed that they are sticking it to the patriarchal man with both gender and race. Where's the beef?

When we chose our mates we chose their genetics. I think it would be really odd to have to choose without the added "but do I want to live with him forever?"
And I don't really blame people who think they'd like "kids that look like me." If I had to write a list down I'd probably say "red hair please."
But you get the baby and then?? What if the problem wasn't the wrong sperm donor but Downs or something? Reproduction is always a crap-shoot... and then you're supposed to love them.
What really REALLY gets me about this story is that these women think that being biracial is BAD. That's their own attitude and they ought to own it instead of pretending it's about how their daughter will face imaginary hardship on account of they can't be bothered to figure out how to cut black-girl hair.

Former Marine I knew when we took karate raised his granddaughter and HE figured out how to braid black-girl hair despite being white and *bald*.

I think she is overstating the difficulties involved in contemplation of the lawsuit settlement. . The kid will have a fair amount of existential angst, but there will be no worries about college tuition.
Doesn't matter how open minded this mother should be, ain't happening and this kid is screwed. And weren't folks up in arms not so long ago against white couples adopting black children? Something about whites not knowing how to prepare the child to face racism?
My cynical side suspects someone at the clinic thought it a fine joke with little thought to the consequences to the child.
She needs to get rid of her white lesbian partner, and get a black lesbian partner.
Problem solved. It will then all look so natural.
I wonder if they felt compelled to try explaining to black hair dressers that their kid was the result of a fuck-up, that she was supposed to be white. That could make them overtly unwelcome if they showed any sign of remorse.

If diversity is good (which seems to be the basis for affirmative action these days), what possible damages can you have from a fully diverse baby? If the kid is also gay = The Jackpot.
On a more serious note (I'm still ROTFLMAO re Tank's "Jackpot" comment) mixed-race kids have a hard row to hoe growing up unless they're a part of the uber liberal Hollywood elite or sons and daughters of academics growing up on a college campus and going to the Lab school. They will almost always be too "dark" for whites and too "light" for the darker-skinned lacks with courser hair (remembering that the split between lighter-skinned blacks and their darker skinned brethren--the "Midnighters"--is legendary in the black community. Entire books and academic monographs, theses and dissertations have been written about it.)
PS: I forgot to comment that these kids will, however, ALWAYS be welcome in Jerry Springer country..
That poor child. The child had no role in her own creation, but will suffer because of her parent's actions.
Even though we love you, sugar, we would have loved you more had you been 100% white and that's why we wanted money from the place that sold us the sperm. And even though we would have loved you more if you had been 100% white, there are a lot of racists in our family who also don't love you very much.

Exactly Haz. A great opportunity to show something great and important to family, friends, and especially this child was lost to racism - the real kind. I can't imagine why you would do this to a child - any child. Race is an artificial construct of no real importance in the face of love and parenting. You might as well disown her for being left-handed or some such bullshit.
