Sunday Morning With Van Morrison

Jackie Wilson Said from Van Morrison's brilliant 1972 album Saint Dominic's Preview.  There are many versions of this song, but the original is still the best.  High energy, small band, great sound. Hearing it made me want to bop around in my first post-college apartment back then; hearing it now makes me want to do the same.

BONUS!

Van singing Caravan with The Band on the Last Waltz - The Band's video of their last performance.  All of them so young, so strong, so energetic, and so good.

Blessings of the day to you and yours.

The Dawgz have tried to play "Jackie Wilson Says" to no avail.

I don't really like it, but I say that from the standpoint of a musician who actually plays the tune. It's rhythmic structure is all starts and stops. Herky Jerky.

Which is not what Jackie Wilson did.

Good morning!

I'm guessing that the heaven in "Jackie Wilson Says" is not the same heaven as in "Astral Weeks," but I could be wrong about that.

Good morning, April!

Morrison does have a magical way of putting me in a better mood no matter how happy I already am. I really envy that talent.

And the same to you and the missus, Haz :)

The first song puts me in mind of Steely Dan again.

Jackie Wilson said...A lot of people have accused Elvis of stealing the black man’s music, when in fact, almost every black solo entertainer copied his stage mannerisms from Elvis.

"Van's the man!"

Said by no less than Robbie Robertson, who watched in awe as Morrison's (somewhat overweight) self got through the refrain without giving himself a hernia.

That piece could have ended up as Van's last waltz.

@Haz: These posts have reached critical Mass such that I look forward to them every Sunday.

Amen. And remember that it's donut Sunday in the Community Room next door.

At the end of the Last Waltz clip there is a link to The Band performing "Up on Cripple Creek" - an excellent showcase of just how talented Levon Helm was. Talk about a guy making the most of his God-given talent!

The Last Waltz was a movie made by Martin Scorsese - he captured that time and place very well.

Just another in a long line of excellent films he has made. I just checked his list of directing credits - hoowee that boy has been productive!

Scorsese made a few great music-related films -- one celebrated the guy everyone loves to hate.

I wish he'd made a few more of those rather than making all those "Easterns" and pimping Leo diCaprio.

@Haz: I'll start to worry when you start posting in Latin.

Hey, I was going to call The Last Waltz just another in a long line of Easterns, but I stopped short of doing so, as it was not filmed in NYC as I had assumed.

Several of the musicians in that movie weren't from the East, either. That Zimmerman fellow was from Minnesota for goodness sake!

And there were foreigners! FOREIGNERS in there, too!
