Great song by Etta.

I love her breezy, swingy treatment of this song. As much as I love Judy Garland, her interpretation comes across as heavy-handed compared to Etta's.

I prefer this version...

Well played, my good sir.

How is the young master?

The Billie Holiday version has more strangeness to it. But then everything Billie Holiday sang had that strange Billie Holiday quality. Like she was floating in a heroin haze. Which she was.

Back in the early 1980's I was fortunate to be able to go to San Francisco and see Lena Horne's one woman show. The Lady and Her Music

She did Stormy Weather among others. My GOD the woman was ageless, beautiful and mesmerizing. What a treat that show was!

I didn't know much about Holiday. When I was looking for the best recording of Gershwin's Summertime to post, I passed hers over.

A few years ago a commenter somewhere listed who he thought were the greatest singers ever, and one was Holiday.

So having just listened to a few songs, I have to conclude that a great deal of her magnetism was due to her presence and personality. It was a sad life she had.

I want to see if I can find her to her last Carnegie Hall performance on youtube to get more of a feel for her, as a review in wiki reported she was in 'good voice' at that concert and the audience adored her.

Sounds great, DBQ, I'll check out Amazon to look at the CD.

The actual performance by Lena Horne was just amazing. I wasn't thrilled at first to see it because she was one of my parents' era performers. But...I was just blown away and so very glad that I was talked into going.

Then there's the lady who did it first -- Ethel Waters.

The little one is doing great! Eats, sleeps, poops, repeat. All systems check out in good working order. A blessing indeed.

Next to Lena Horne, I prefer the Peggy Lee version:

That's great, Paddy :) Is Mrs. Paddy doing well, and is big sister enchanted?

Mrs Paddy is recovering quicker this time than the last one, which is interesting because it was almost the exact same delivery experience (elevated levels on a test, inducing, 3 day wait, labor starts, baby in 15 minutes, some tearing). I think we may have had a better doctor, certainly at a more appropriate hour. So that might have helped.

Big sis is definitely enchanted. She's only 2 and a quarter but has strong language skills so we've been prepping her. She got into her 2 test of willpower phase a month ago in full force, though, so that's added a bit to the challenge. Loves the baby, though, and that's wonderful.

Thanks for asking!

You open a flood of memories :)

Glad you all are well. What a sweet time.

re preparation of the older sibling, my son was three plus as the birth was pending. I was as big as a house. I showed him a schematic of a baby inside the womb and tried to get him to understand I had a baby inside me. He didn't make the connection, but he did remark on the picture, 'that baby wants out.'
