Bundling internet services

My mom recently bundled her phone, internet, and television with Time Warner. $110/month, which strikes me as reasonable (basic package, not HBO, etc.).  Does anyone have experience with other services? Which is the best? Is U-Verse all that?

I signed up with Verizon Fios Deb about a year ago and got a $300 debit card and pay $175 per month for phone, WIFI internet and three HD TV's with everything [600 channels ? including Showtime, NFL Red Zone, Cinemax, Big Ten Network] but HBO [I refuse to give even one nickel to Bill Maher].

Our deal is for two years and I expect they will try to jack it up bigtime then and I will just switch back to Comcast. So it sounds like your Mom's deal is OK.

And Lem- my two cents is you are not a referee and you are not someone's Mommy so when a commenter comes running to you and whining about another commenter, I recommend you tell them to grow a set and live with it or they can take a hike.

U-verse is light years better than Time Warner, but, yeah, it's not a bad thing.

I've had U-verse and Brighthouse in recent years. U-verse is a little bit better if you're not into bells and whistles, and more than a little bit better if you do. Prices (in Orlando) are comparable, when it comes right down to it. Currently I'm on Brighthouse, because I've got an older hi-def TV, and it has some problems with flicker from U-verse, which was never explained. But I liked it otherwise.

My Time Warner bundle is horrible. The internet is always going out and the cable is not consistent. I have the tech here every month. I plan to switch to FIOS as soon as it becomes available.

That sounds like a good deal. I pay approx $100/month for phone and internet (no TV) for Verizon FIOS.

The internet connection is outstanding, as fast or faster than my work, which is also very good. I gave up on TV and just watch whatever comes over the internet. Mostly that sucks. Thank God for Jack Bauer and Cosmos.

I haven't had to put tin foil on my rabbit ears yet.

A testament to signal quality delivered through God's cable (company logo: "More is Not Better".

AJ, what is cool is that I talked to a tech today, and to just add one more hd box is $11 a month.

Trooper, the bad news is I had to talk to that tech because right after the installer tech left, we lost wireless and phone. Hee. It's all squared away for now.

ARM I thought it sounded good, esp. when she said she'd been paying $60/mo for phone! Disgusting.

@deborah,

Be sure to warn your mother than when the power goes out, the phone goes out, too.

Oldsters are used to the "copper wire" phone system where the phone system basically works until the line is cut. That's not the way it is with the cable/FIOS Voice over IP (VOIP) telephone systems.

Tell your mother to make sure she also has a cell phone & that she always keeps it charged, just in case of emergency.

We have FIOS for about what you're paying. We do not have extra pay channels, but opted for faster internet. No problems at all. Had it here and at the last place for about 3 years.

We don't use our landline, but it was cheaper to get it than not get it. Really, all we need is the internet, as LA has about 75 over the air digital channels, but the bundle makes it sensible to add the basic cable.

My TW bundle is awful. $175 monthly for TV, phone and internet. And I have only 1 cable box, and basic TV channels.

I'm dropping the phone service altogether - who needs a land line anymore? I'd like to drop TV as well, but haven't found a better/lower cost service. FIOS isn't available because our city essentially granted TW a monopoly. I am looking at Dish TV.

Meanwhile, Comcast acquired TW, so we are going to be Comcast. But! Comcast sold our part of the earth to Charter. So what we wind up with is anyone's guess.

If Steve Jobs was still alive, I think he'd figure our a way for consumers to pay only for the channels they actually use. And I'd like that.

I got my voip phone service from an outfit in Brooklyn called ITP. At first I thought I was going to have problems and was worried it was a fly by night operation, but many years later and I haven't had any problems $15 a month including voice mail and free US long distance.
Comcast for Internet. I have the slower speed at $30 a month bundled with Premium cable at $95 a month.
I could do without cable,it's a real rip off,but it keeps my elderly Pa happy.

I have Time Warner for cable and Verizon for Internet and phones. I'm paying $131 for TWC and $162 for Verizon. I'm pretty sure that if I start haggling I could do better. On the other hand inertia has been the guiding principle of my life, and I'm not sure if the hassle would be worth the savings. I'm not going to die broke, but it's possible I could die bitter and frustrated waiting for Time Warner to install an Internet connection.

YH, thanks for that info. I've been meaning to get her in the habit of always keeping the cell phone with her so if she falls she'll have it.

Haz, one good reason to at least keep local service is that if there's an emergency and you can't speak, you can dial 911 and they'll send someone.

I have had Fios here in the Dallas area for 5 years. With a landline phone, 2 TVs (no HBO type channels), and lightning fast internet, the monthly bill is $108. Every time they improve the internet, I sign up, renegotiate, and the price has gone down by a couple dollars a month.

My landline works when the power goes out and the internet has gone down only once. Love Fios.
