Althouse: "11:45: Crack finds more misogyny in Led Zeppelin than in rap."

The Best F*cking Article You’ll Read Today: Profanity in Rap Lyrics Since 1985
As we all know, a common ingredient in many rap lyrics is shameless profanity. No word is off limits. With f-bombs and assorted slurs streaming through popular music, it’s no shock that some people are up in arms against rap. As mentioned before, these artists reach a huge audience. Is it appropriate for them to be spitting profanity-laced lyrics to the world? This study won’t be answering any questions of morality, but it should give others some fuel to form their own opinions.
We examined profanity in popular rap music since 1985. The key word here is “popular”. To do this, we selected the five albums from each year that we deemed as the most influential or important. Total sales, artist name recognition, and album hit density all factored into our album choices... You can see the full list of albums by downloading the data from the Best Tickets Data Collective. For this study, we counted each instance of profanity in every song of every album. Without further adieu, the results....
Although the claim by Crack Emcee was that there was more misogyny (not necessarily profane?) in Led Zeppelin lyrics than in rap, this "study" does include a catalog of terms in rap lyrics (since 1985) that could be construed as misogynous. Terms such as B*tch, Ho and C*nt.

That's 3,577 times the word b*tch was used, 1,213 times the word ho was used and 33 times the word c*nt was used on raps most popular albums alone.
Many of these songs even have profanity in the title, setting the stage for the ensuing madness. I do feel the need to mention a particular song that was not used in our study, but is regarded by many to be the most profanity-laced rap song in history. Lil’ Jon’s “Real N*gga Roll Call” featuring Ice Cube from 2004 is mindbogglingly vulgar. In total it contains more than 329 cuss words, including: 165 n*ggas, 61 f*cks, 33 p*ssys, 25 b*tches, 21 asses, 17 hos, 4 skeets, and 3 sh*ts. It really is utterly ridiculous. I can’t with a clear conscience recommend that you listen to it, but I will provide a link....

What we need are the misogyny police. Or as Paddy mentioned at TOP - a chart:
Good misogyny and bad misogyny. Like good racism and bad racism, they fall on ideological lines.

I concur. Old woman failing in trying to look young makes stupid assertion while pimping race baiting idiot is an excellent blog post topic.

It does beg the question, is Crack being paid for this? If so, that Ray guy is being ripped off.

I'll skip it.

Lem, seriously, who fucking cares what TOP's hostess and hobbit thinks?

"Squeeze my lemon...". One of the greatest songs musically, especially the axe riff, but I always hated the lyrics.

aridog, Some here care deeply. They need some self esteem therapy. Maybe Stuart Smalley daily affirmations would help. Maybe some chin-ups? Have you ever seen such girly masculinity. What's next, cartwheels or splits?

Lem,

A simple cataloguing of swear words tells you nothing about the songs, their premise, or the context of the (offending) words beyond their existence. For instance, here's Ice Cube's "Look Who's Burnin'," which has "bitch" all over it but isn't about misogyny - it's a cautionary tale on STDs, gold-digging, class striving, and pretentiousness.

There are too many kinds of Rap Music for you to assess it's worth, considering you're determined to focus on one of them (Gangsta) and think you understand Hip-Hop culture. Queen Latifah's feminist take immediately came up in black's "bad culture" while Rock 'N Roll's "good culture" kept bands like Heart away from from the same level of acceptance for 20+ years.

The only thing that stands out, for me, is how your ignorance, coupled with your stubbornness and unwillingness to learn, is perfect for attacking, and causing real-world consequences to, the most vulnerable communities in our society - who have done nothing to deserve it. You're just choosing to be that guy.

It's colorblind racism at it's finest,...

Led Zeppelin lyrics can be embarrassingly sexual ... if you're 14 and listening to the radio in the car WITH YOUR MOM. But seriously, are sexual lyrics per se misogynistic? I say no! So there. My main objection to LedZep is all those weird middle earth references. Like, we get it Scoob. You read Tolkien. While stoned.

So you getting paid for this Crack?

I'm currently at 39,000 feet over Omaha. I think my normal rate of $1 per comment should be increased due to the extra radiation exposure.

Shouting Thomas said...

Ah, those vulnerable communities!

Shouting Thomas said...

Does this mean Crack is back for another bout of Mau-Mauing?

MamaM said...

Since vulnerable is vulnerable, and all humans beings are vulnerable, removing "the most" from "the most vulnerable communities in the world" turns the following statement into one which applies to human beings everywhere, regardless of their beliefs, spiritualism, religion, or lack there of. How weird is that?

The only thing that stands out, is how your ignorance, coupled with your stubbornness and unwillingness to learn, is perfect for attacking, and causing real-world consequences to vulnerable communities in our society - who have done nothing to deserve it. You're just choosing to be that guy."

Which means Lem doesn't have the corner on the market when it comes to ignorance, stubbornness, and unwillingness to learn.

In truth, he goes so far as to post a mirror and invite free citizens to stop by, take a look, and form their own opinions.

Good on him.

You guys are going to learn your "playing the victim" mantra - and the one about blacks not leaving the Democrat "plantation" - doesn't work the way you think it does. It doesn't work at all, actually. Nobody's afraid of "playing the victim" to whites - we know the history and white supremacy. We know, at the height of slavery, when it was at it's worse, whites claimed blacks were happy - what makes you think anyone assumes you're more perceptive now?

We're all "playing the victim" and still on the "plantation" - two concerns I'd think whites would want to distance themselves from. Along with being so fixated on blacks working. Work, blacks, work. That's all y'all seem to know.

Like I said, none of it's getting through,...

Equality doesn't mean a hill of beans if one rather stand as a member of a protected class.

Equality now means a license to play dice with the logic of the universe. To invent alternative realities. To evolve and if you don't evolve then you are the other.

Equality is too stubbornly fixed.

Cunt is a truly great word, and one that I recommend using more often. The Brits (and Irish!) don't seem to see it as misogynist, but then, they also use it against guys, as I would and sometimes do.

Which only makes it fair that you could call a woman a "dick" or an "asshole" also, if occasioned to.

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

Led Zeppelin is not a misogynist band. That is, assuming that a guy wanting to have sex with a woman doesn't make him a misogynist. What are they thinking of, The Lemon Song? Living Loving Maid? Well, there you might have a point, but I'd say praising a housewife's domestic skills isn't as hateful as wishing violence or worse put-downs on someone.

Hey Crack, I'm rubbing my index finger against my thumb as I play the worlds smallest violin. Now go do a shuck and jive for me as ya pick some cotton, while trooper plays the spoons, bag plays the washboard, and Leisure Suit Meade diddles a dog just off camera.

And The Carpenters are more misogynist than Led Zeppelin.

Wrong - you enslave the black ones and make them build it. Then you expect us to "contribute" to your having a permanently better life based on the previous exploitation.

You work - I'ma laugh at your Naziism,...

Gosh, Bags. I never took you for a Nazi. I guess the glider thing should have been a tip-off.

virgil xenophon said...

Late to the party here, but Rabel obviously knows military history. For the uninitiated, the allusion to Nazis and gliders is based on the fact that the WW I Versailles peace treaty forbid the Germans to have an Air Force, so the Nazis initially trained their (soon-to-be-German-Air-Force) pilots as glider pilots to get around the treaty.

Even Nazi's had a work ethic. You on the other hand just cry about one.
