"It was just habit that I did it as we knew he was going to die. He was having palliative treatment, but I realised he had stopped breathing and I read the time on my watch as 8.15am."

A joy to read about a man of dedication and integrity after the 'giraffe' article. I have heard so many times about a person's watch spontaneously stopping when they die.

W. H. Auden approves.

I was looking to recycle a tag with this story, and "don't forget to change your clock" was the closest relevancy I could find.

Does W.H. Auden approve the clock stopping story or giving a hungry lion a juicy bone?

The giraffe situation is sad because they had given him a name (Marius), invited a bunch of little kids in to observe the execution, and then publicized the results including before and after photos of poor doomed Marius and shots of the adorable tots standing around next to the formerly adorable carcass. The giraffe article is annoying because it seems like the zookeepers set out to teach the public a lesson in Harsh Reality. Lessons are annoying and rarely effective though I'm sure this got a lot of publicity on the internet. If they'd just culled the herd quietly this would not be a story.
