'Immigration Reform', or as I like to call it, 'Amnesty'

"A little over a week ago, 16 House Republicans--led by Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL)--stepped forward to write to President Obama about how American workers would be displaced if these immigration reform proposals succeeded."

“Rapidly expanding unskilled immigration – at a time when factory work and blue collar jobs are disappearing – would represent the final economic blow for millions of workers who have been struggling to gain an economic foothold,” the members wrote. “Yet, despite this jobs crisis for American workers, the White House continues to advocate that CEOs and business executives seek lower cost labor. The White House has entertained a parade of high-powered business executives to discuss immigration policy, all while shutting out the concerns of everyday wage-earners who overwhelmingly oppose these measures. You even released an economic report saying that the ‘hospitality and leisure industry’ needs ‘legislation that would legalize workers in the U.S. and facilitate the lawful employment of future foreign-born workers.’”

Yeah, that's all of 16 House Republicans on the side of the US worker. And there are 435 members! Ugh. The nation is doomed.

On the plus side, I finally have acquired the power to ever so slightly influence things: I am now a regular on Gallup polls! Fuck voting, I'm getting polled, bitchez!

Uh, "getting polled" doesn't quite sound like a good thing when put that way. (Uh, neither does having a poll get "put that way", for that matter.)

16 congress people are on the side of a major majority of Americans.

Will the media be honest about that fact? No way.

35 years ago, all the house painters, roofers and construction workers in Woodstock were local white guys. Musicians liked to work in these trades because they were seasonal and part time. Many moved on to develop contracting careers.

Now, the crews are all Mexican.

It's not just the entry level that is being cut out from under native Americans.

The H1B visa guys from India are taking jobs from American programmers and leaving many out of work.

Steve Sailer puts it very well (and I paraphrase), when he says that ownership (i.e., citizenship) should have privileges.

Our government seems to hate us.

Another of the negative outcomes of labeling any attempt to preserve the self-interest of white guys as "bigotry."

The job of white guys, according to our betters, is to be chumps.

You can get that in Thailand, but you have to marry them if you want to bring them home. (A friend of mine is doing that currently, if he can come up with the scratch to bring her here.)

ST, Sailer has another good phrase concerning immigration reform (I paraphrase slightly):

We need more Third World brown people to do the jobs Americans just can't get.

Raising the minimum wage will destroy far more jobs than those taken by immigrants, but when you raise the minimum wage AND add unskilled workers, it's just gonna create a huge mess of dependency.

I know some people need studies with graphs and data tables to know what the weather is outside, but I can tell you from up close that raising the minimum wage will kill opportunity for Americans. Our business grew by 22% last year, and we tripled sales since 2009. We've doubled our payroll. Despite that, in 2013 we increased our employees by exactly zero people. That was in anticipation of Obamacare, and it's still gonna hurt us badly anyway. I would be hiring another 20 to 30 new people this year again as unskilled trainees who start slightly above the old minimum wage, would learn valuable new skills and who would quickly rise up the pay scale either at my company or some other one if they leave. California just increased the minimum wage just like the D.C. Dems want to. The combination of Obamacare and the increased minimum wage over the last 2 years here has cost at least 40 people a new opportunity and career just at my small company alone. Instead I was forced to buy a lot of labor eliminating equipment. I tried to buy American and new, and but much of it had to be foreign made and/or used which helped American workers none. This is actually improving our profitability, but that's not what I wanted. I wanted to balance that with hiring people and helping my community.

Obama and the Dems are job and opportunity destroying from start to finish. They micromanage education so that people are virtually useless when they get out, and then they put up barriers to hiring them where they could become self-sufficient. They are corrupt, arrogant fools, and we put them in charge.

I really feel for all the young people whose future is being laid barren like Romans came through and salting their land. Congratulations, lefties, on your wonderful victories.

Why would you do that? A whole bunch of airfare would be cheaper, and quieter.

A favorite anti-immigration "reform" screed from Steve Sailer:

A Fourth of July sermon from Slate

A bunch of pertinent stuff about tech billionaires wanting cheaper labor because, as Sailer puts it:

As we all know, Google's American software engineers are semi-literate buffoons who are too stupid to deserve to be paid well enough to afford to buy a house with a yard in an extremely expensive region. Why should they get paid enough to marry and have children?

...the final economic blow...

Bet Obama salivated when he got to that phrase. Okay, he most likely never read it, so one of his minions salivated and passed the we're almost there good news on to the boss.

As of last April, the unemployment rate for software engineers had dropped to 2.2%.

Manual labor of all kinds is seeing wages drop due to pressure from illegal immigration. Software engineering is not experiencing the same pressure from H1B's.

Now, if the demand side of the labor curve shrinks -- if the economy stops creating new software jobs as rapidly as it has been -- then, we might see a spike in unemployment from H1B's. But probably not, since it is a pain in the ass for companies to make use of them. We'd probably just see software salaries fall, instead.

My personal observation from the workplace is that this is bullshit. Every job site I worked on as a contractor was at least 10% H1B.

H1B visa holders also lower the wages of American programmers.

I'm in favor of American programmers making as much as possible. I don't care about the problems of Indians. They can fix their own problems at home, instead of coming here to take my job and lower my salary.

My personal observation is that it is bullshit too, since so far as I can tell from firsthand experience the unemployment rate for software engineers is 0%. :)

But it turns out that "data" is not the plural of "anecdote".

Every job site I worked on as a contractor was at least 10% H1B.

Which is weird, because HR departments aren't normally in the habit of *telling* contractors the immigration status of other employees. What I suspect you mean is "at least 10% Indians" in which case my response is "well, YEAH".

But "this place employs a lot of Indians" does not equate to "Americans have been thrown out of work". By your logic the fact that most software outfits are overwhelmingly male "proves" that the unemployment rate among female software engineers is enormous. :)

H1B visa holders also lower the wages of American programmers.

Offshoring software development (while still a pain in the ass) is easier than offshoring most other jobs. American software engineers are already in competition with the Indian and Chinese workers in question, whether they're living in Asia or in America. So it is by no means obvious that H1B's drive down American wages at this point in time. They might -- they certainly COULD, under the right circumstances -- but thus far salaries seem to be doing great.

I'm in favor of American programmers making as much as possible.

If you wanted to be able to guarantee yourself a high salary by keeping a death-grip on the labor supply, you picked the wrong profession. You should have been a doctor or a crane operator.

Data is routinely cooked. See US. Gov. on unemployment. So, yeah, my "anecdotes," I guarantee you, are more reliable than your data.

Why would HR need to tell me that the newly arrived Indian (and I do mean from India) is H1B? Once again, I am capable of seeing what is directly in front of my eyes. You want to play schoolboy "science," games with me, be my guest.

Salaries are great, depending on how you look at it. Yeah, it's pretty easy for me to find a $120k job whenever I want one. I'm retired now, so I don't want one.

I'm a lot more clever than you think. I always found a niche where I did exert a "death-grip" on employers. How I did this is my own biz.

You seem to have missed the point, as is common in these times of well-indoctrinated "scientific" liberals.

I'm out for myself. My job is to get more for me and for my family. I fight, undermine and destroy all efforts to hinder my efforts in every way that I can.

It's a war and I intend to win. Well, I did.

Which makes me wonder. Why are you gassing in this manner?

Thanks for the advice. Why in the hell do you think I need it?

You can always take them to lunch. People love to talk about themselves.

I'll try to remember that the next time I hear you whining about people voting to take your money and redistribute it to themselves. See, personally I would say that that sort of thing is morally wrong, but under a "I want mine and fuck the rest of y'all" moral framework there really isn't any reason to care about anybody's wealth but my own.

Anyway, what you might realize if you were a little less of a dumbass is that America companies -- software companies in *particular* -- get a big chunk of their revenue from foreigners purchasing goods and services from them.

Now, we *could* try saying "Americans are only allowed to buy stuff from American companies". But unless you're dumb enough to think the rest of the world will say "durr, ok", the end result of that should be obvious.

You bitch about 10% of a company's employees being foreigners. What do you think will happen to that company's employees when the company loses 30% of its revenue? More jobs for Americans, or fewer?

You think like a Democrat, Thomas. You think the government can vote you a living. Welcome to the real world, buddy.

Shouting Thomas said...

@Revenant

That was about as completely fucking incoherent a reply as you could have made.

I earned what I made. Didn't go to the government for a thing.

If you weren't a dumb fuck, you might have noticed that.

Do you even bother to read and comprehend, jackass?

Revenant said...

Immigration restrictions put in place to "protect" your job are just another form of welfare, you whiny little bitch.

but this is all moot. Software engineer unemployment is low today, about as low as it has ever been outside the dot-com days. Everyone who actually works in or around the industry knows this. The job market's hot for software engineers.

Your whole argument is "I say I'm right and all that data that disagrees with me has been faked by liars". Why the IEEE, which opposes H1B visas, would be faking the numbers to make it look like software jobs *aren't* threatened by foreigners, is a mystery you're apparently uninterested in solving.

Because when the two possibilities are "there's a vast conspiracy to conceal the truth" and "Thomas admits he's wrong about anything ever", it is always column "A" with you. :)
