Holy Moley!

This is a map with the forecasted wind chill lows for Sunday/Monday.  We haven't had wind chills this low in many decades.  The public and private schools have already announced that they will be closed Monday, statewide.

Blizzards are one thing, and snow can be cleared away.  But you can't shovel wind chill.

I just looked at the forecast for Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, on the north slope of the Brooks Range and on the Beaufort Sea.  The temperature there is forecast at 3F.  Downright balmy.

That -79F is up in AllenS's neighborhizzle.

Is there anything global warming can't do?

That was one thing about the East Coast.

The Gulf Stream moderated some of that.

Sometimes.

When it's bitter cold in the Midwest it's usually warmer in Alaska, dip and bump in that jet stream.

Jeez -79 degrees! If some power lines go down and people freeze to death what will the climate change crowd have to say?

We really need to harden our power grid to protect against frigid cold instead of the constant hand-wringing over climate change which we can't do much about anyway.

Perfect weather for the 49ers!

I'm in that county you see between the -52º and the -79º. Polk county. I'm closer to the MN border. It got up to about 14º today, but the SE wind was about 25 miles an hour. Not bad out of the wind, but very cold in it.

They might leave here as the 24 and a halfs.

AllenS, Ever visit the casino in Danbury. I had been to the old one and was shocked when we went there this Fall and saw the new one.

AllenS said...

No, I never have. I've driven by the old one and it looked like a dump.

Wind chill numbers are bullshit.

My cousin lives near where they recorded 60 below, up near Embarrass. Then they took the record away and moved it to Tower, ostensibly because of more reliable thermometers. They being those commies from Minneapolis.

That's 60 below, real numbers.

Ha Ha Ha

Michael Haz tweets it's so cold he saw a guy with his pants up.

Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha

I was thinking of those today but none of mine are as good.

It's so cold I dumped trays of ice on myself to keep warm.

It's so cold I saw a polar bear wearing ice boots.

It's so cold my Starbucks coffee came on a popsicle stick.

It's so cold metal rims shrank inside rubber tires causing vehicles to collapse.

It's so cold a heat seeking missile was shot and it kept going until it ran out of fuel and dropped from the sky.

No wait, wait, wait, it's so cold the sun was buying electric blankets and scarves.

It's so cold even Leona Helmsley cried.

It's presently 31º. The temp is supposed to drop all day, with very high winds on the way. It's dark out, but it appears we got a couple of inches of snow last night.

Word of caution: If you see something shiny like a car door and it's below zero, don't lick it.

"Wind chill numbers are bullshit."

Yea, iirc the "functional equivalent" human tissue substitute commonly used as a base to calculate temps has been found to be seriously deficient and produces bogus readings.

AllenS said...

Wind chill numbers might be bullshit, but standing in the wind when it's cold out gives you a wind chill feeling that is colder than the air temp out of the wind.

It's now 20º. Lost 11º in 2 hours. Wind out of the NNW at 16 mphs with gusts at 22.

Wow, Allen. That is a significant drop. The cold front is really moving in.

It is 18 degrees here 7:13 this morning and I am about to go outside, like I do every morning to feed the cats and let them out of the workshop. I put them in at night so they don't freeze to death and/or fight with the foxes and other critters who are looking for a tasty midnight snack.

18 degrees is actually warmer than usual for us in the mornings up here in the mountains. Quite often this time of year it is in the -degrees at night. BUT.....we are also having an unusually warm winter with afternoons all the way up into the low 40's and even low 50's. Incredibly warm here!

Also very dry. NO precipitation to speak of. We WANT the snowpack for the water in the spring. Plus a nice fat coating of snow on the roof actually keeps the house warmer. Retains the heat.

Weather....waddaya gonna do. Can't change it. Just be prepared.

Stay warm and dry all you guys in the path of the cold front and storms.

It's at 14º right now. Light sunshine. Usually when it gets really cold, we have blue skies and no clouds.

Here's where I get my information. Check out the rest of the week.

Thanks Allen (I think)...and by using that site I find today is nice, sunny and 23 degrees at the moment here, with a chance of more snow this evening.

I also learn the "suck" begins tomorrow with snow and a low of -4 degrees, also "breezy" heading in to next week with lows down to -11 or so.

WTF?
