Men First, Children Second, Women Last.

So goes a little bit of a story, a woman introduced to us former? Althouse commenters, and whom I proceeded to call Smoking Lady, where she, tells a Canadian journalist writing a piece on her, the Smoking Lady - Women Oppression is basically a Myth.

Here is the video of Smoking Lady telling the story of how the title of this post came to be ...  you can skip up to the beginning of the story, the fun part, at 1:40 in the video.

I find Feminism is very mockable*. Bra Burnings? ... are you kidding me?
Please feel free to share your own stories, impressions, apprehensions and whatever Inga wants to say. (At Lem's we love Inga)

Have Blog Will Travel

This morning in a new post, Althouse discusses the new directions her blog might take.

Althouse is encouraging us to travel on our own... I'm not doing her words justice. I just got up and I haven't brushed my teeth yet.
"As Henry said in his email to me, sharing that first link, above, it was perfectly easy to set up a Blogger blog. It might take one minute, and then you're off. Don't sit there in that old broken-down bus wondering when it will start up again. Climb out, stick out your thumb, and Google will whiz by presently and give you a ride."

Please go and read it and maybe you will say for yourself, in other words, something similar. Here or wherever your final destination might be. Like they say on the plane after it lands. Final destination sounds ominous but sometimes there is no subtle way of saying the obvious. I've said my piece on the comments here (not as eloquently as I could have perhaps) but I harbor no rancor. If I ever do, and I do because I'm human, it doesn't last more than a few days. But, in the end, w/o much fanfare.... I need to go to work soon and I need to finish this.

At the Park

My first Open Thread... easy now...

Zimmerman Cymbal

This thread is dedicated to the vibrations the Zimmerman trial is generating. The Race Cymbal, the seemingly ever present and never new, the loudest among the instruments with which we make music.

A reader of Althouse, identifying herself as Jane, wrote to Althouse about a new way the AP seems to be  playing the same old song and dance. Well, the AP is playing the song so we dance to it.
"This must be in the AP stylebook somewhere, because that sentence, or some variation therof, is found in every single article about the case:  Martin "is" black but Zimmerman only "identifies" as Hispanic.  Can you recall any other situation in which AP has played with racial identification vs. race as a fact in the news story?"
Althouse says...
"This is a great topic about which to maintain vigilance."
At Lem's, topics like race, highly technical, that require a tremendous amount of dexterity and years and years of practice to be able to play and not, you know, get booed off the stage, not to mention drive your neighbors and family member crazy, are better left to the professionals.

You are welcomed to try your "stuff" here if you want... as long as it doesn't pass a certain decibel that turns people crazy. Just keep the noise down, ok?

Obama the Mockable President

"All 45 Senate Republicans are calling for the implementation of Obamacare to be permanently delayed. The senators make their request in a letter to President Obama."
"We write to express concern that in your recent decision to delay implementation of the employer mandate, you have unilaterally acted and failed to work with Congress on such a significant decision.  Further, while your action finally acknowledges some of the many burdens this law will place on job creators, we believe the rest of this law should be permanently delayed for everyone in order to avoid significant economic harm to American families," the senators write."
Two Term Presidents usually work on their 'legacy' in the second term. But Obama's plate is so full that I suggest he postpone the work of his legacy, until after the midterm elections. The president is too busy looking busy.

"Dick Cheney's daughter eyes Senate bid in Wyoming"

"[Liz] Cheney, eldest daughter of former vice president Dick Cheney, told Wyoming Sen. Mike Enzi that "she's looking at" challenging him in a Republican primary next year, according to a New York Times story from this weekend."
Dick Cheney was Wyoming's lone congressman from 1979 to 1989, before becoming Defense secretary for George H.W. Bush and then Bush 43's vice president. The NYT story says Dick Cheney has been more visible in his home state since his daughter moved to Wyoming -- and that he and Enzi are fly-fishing buddies.
This is welcomed news, as a relief valve from the Hillary Inevitability run away train.

ADDED : While Hillary has to dress up like the Iron Lady, Liz Cheney acts like the Iron Lady.

Oh Canada

Althouse has a new post about a train wreck in Canada.
"Police say there's evidence Canada train was tampered with."
Althouse focuses on a comment from a [heavy duty] mechanic who suspects sabotage.
If you want to read about it, I suggest you go and read it, and then come here and comment until your heart is content.
While I was trying to get worked up about it, enough to summon the blog dogs, the song 'Oh Canada', the Canadian National Anthem, popped into my head.
O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!

From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

I believe the first time I heard the song, it was a television performance at an Olympic Ceremony.
I also remember hearing it before a baseball game against the Sox. And I conclusively remember comparing it, in my mind, to our US national anthem and thinking our song was better. Now, looking at the words, I see a simple magnificence of faith and trust that I believe is very beautiful.

Etiquette, Not a social con, SiteMeter, Weddings

Those are the tags that caught my eye this morning at an Althouse post titled ...
"Do I seem like a 'social con'?"
I never heard those two words together like that. Goggle took me to a story of fraud arrests of 58 people in connection to a Social Security Contract.

Althouse couldn't possibly be worried about Social Security. Is she?

So it must be something else... oh that's right.... I forgot.... we are not allowed to inquire directly.

Pure Rank Speculation and Emotional Despondancy

But that's all I got to keep me company right now that Althouse has kicked me to the curb.
When Are The Comments Coming Back?

Its possible that Althouse is creating a condition by which she can later say ... 'look what you said about me, you are not welcome at my kingdom ... go some other place you right winger, where there will only be weeping, and gnashing of teeth, when you see Ritmo, Inga and Garage and all the liberals in the kingdom of Althouse, but you yourselves thrown out.'

Maybe, the lack of Althouse air is doing something to me. I'm not myself. Maybe I'm delirious, gregarious and maybe even nefarious. I need to get a hold of myself. I thought I heard the whispering voice of Field of Dreams... but that movie is like from a time when there was no internet, so people needed to hear a whispering voice from the sky.

What I would do right now for a string of Betamax monologue. You know how many times I walk right past them w/o even giving them a quick look?

He was the last commenter before the doors where shut, padlocked, barricaded, dog warned.

I couldn't be bothered reading Betamax, I was too good for that.

Now look at me. One moment I'm defiant and despondent the next and back to defiance reliance on a mix metaphor ... the red sox are playing in half an hour, hurry up and finish this shit already.

Hey, That's exactly what I've been meaning to say really ... We haven't got a long time professor. Don't take too long.

Althouse Street and corner of Arab Spring

"A Google Street view screen grab, mailed to me by a reader."
Says Althouse at a new post this afternoon.

I didn't think Althouse would subscribe to the idea that the best way to move forward was to go backwards first.

Shelter in Place until we figure out what we are dealing with!

Creepy Althouse lockdown.
The photo-op.

Its deja vu all over again.

What's the Consensus?

At Trooper York's open comment section (imagine that) the consensus seemed to be that there were just too many conservatives crowding out the Althouse Blog.
Too many conservative crashers coming in via the venerated Glenn Reynolds Instapundit.

If this is true, then my suggestion is we need to coordinate some kind of effort to get Instapundit to open up the comments section. He travels under the PJTV umbrella and I believe they have an open comment section to subscribers I used to have a subscription at the beginning of that enterprise, but I found myself at Althouse so much, I let it elapse. It only used to be $5.00.

I could be wrong about the consensus. But the suggestion still good and valid IMHO.

Why Blog Crashes Have Become More Mundane

"Why Catastrophic Airline Crashes Have Become More Survivable."
"Over the many decades of commercial air travel, the airlines have learned more and more about why airplanes crash and how passengers survive."

"Ah! What we could do if we faced a sudden stark threat, as our ancestors did in evolutionary times! We inherited the capacities they needed then, but we've got so little use for them these days. We go to action movies and ride roller coasters or paraglide to activate the antiquated bodily systems. It's not that we're nostalgic for danger, but built into our depths, there's a need for something that — we in no conscious sense — desire."

Says Althouse at a new post this morning.

And we've found an unconscious way to feed that need with... competitive games.

Sports are a problem... the breed the Aaron Hernandez... women and kids looking up to these monsters.

Ban something already!... What, over the top?

I'm exaggerating I'm sure but ... oh well, this is just for me and my Neanderthal.

Bridge to Now-That-You _ Are-Not-Here

"After more than 40 years as the Bridge to Nowhere, it is brilliant news that this infamous landmark has finally been completed..."
"... and will serve as a vital link in Glasgow's network of walking and cycling routes."

"And yet, as a metaphor, it is no longer useful."

Says Althouse at a new post this morning

And yet, as a metaphor with regards to her dynamiting, road side bombing her blog, it is totally useful. Its useful because I'm here on the other side, w/o a direct connection, which she had built and tended to for years and decided to cut off with a seemingly careless haste.

Sorry you faded away there...

"... I'm sorry I can't invite you in to talk about whatever you want. Enjoy your evening."
Says Althouse last night at her No Café Café, which I want, but cant directly comment to.

"I'm sorry, too, Dmitri... I'm very sorry... *All right*, you're sorrier than I am, but I am as sorry as well... I am as sorry as you are, Dmitri! Don't say that you're more sorry than I am, because I'm capable of being just as sorry as you are... So we're both sorry, all right?... All right."

Taking up Freeman's* suggestion

I'm creating this blog to be able to comment to Althouse's Blog posts, which she has decided to turn off.

UPDATE: She is calling her decision Comments Vacation.

I'm not going to speculate as to why I believe she turned off the comments, because, one, it's not going to change anything and two, I probably contributed to the decision. So, if anything I should be apologizing for contributing to the ruination of a good thing.

Althouse longtime commenter Freeman Hunt suggested*....

"Please blog at your own blogs and link to me. I notice where I'm getting linked, and can link to your blogs to include you here."

Make it so. (captain Picard)  -

ESPN went to a different commenter format themselves but I chose not to follow them because the only choice available to comment will be via Facebook, and I'm not a Facebook enthusiast. Facebook is not for me.

So, hopefully I'll continue to comment, even if at least for a while, it will just be for myself.

Correction* - It was Althouse that suggested commenters blog at their own blog.
