Your Butt is Wide, Well Mine Is Too

Professor Althouse ask's Did Zimmerman gain all that weight to aid in his post-acquittal disguise?
"So how does he change that face? One way is to drop the packed-on poundage, which bloated and puffed up his face. He can grow his hair and beard, wear glasses, adopt an alias, and relocate to some part of the country where people don't expect to see him. But by packing on over 100 pounds before the trial, he created a face that he now has the power to radically modify. That weight, because it was rapidly gained, should be relatively easy to drop. And, remember, there was evidence at trial that Zimmerman had previously worked hard at weight loss and his success was impressive."
Am I blogging off the fat ... how can I put this?

"Weird Al" Yankovic - Fat

ADDED : Pollo has sent me an e-mail alerting me to an apparent problem with blogger.
"Lem, there seems to be a problem with comments disappearing, particularly in longer threads. Please address it or fix it. It's not fair to people who take the time to compose thoughts addressing specific questions."
I don't know how to fix that. What I could suggest is to perhaps move the conversation to a newer post. I don't have concrete rules about commenting, except to ask that anonymous commenters please self identify so as to make it easer for other commenters to respond.  Thanks Pollo, Freman Hunt and Icepick for contributing your suggestions.

I remember remarking at Althouse that whoever portrays Zimmerman in the inevitable reenactment is going to face a challenge even greater than De Niro faced in "Raging Bull."

I'm a commenter who is "blogging". It may turn out that this is really not a blog but a place to comment, which is what I've always used to do, love to do and continue to do here.

chickelit said...

Lem, the problem is that when your comment threads get long, not all of them load. It's akin to the "over 200" comments thing on other blogger blogs. There's this little button down below that says "load more..." The problem is that it needs to be hit repeatedly (more than once) even if the number of comments is in the mid to low 200's to see them all. That's the work around. I don't know why this is.

Lem, I think it's this new-fangled Blogger interface/template. The nesting comments and drop box for replies is highly annoying to the lazy :) Please consider using the old-fashioned one.

rhhardin said...

The Water is Wide is such a tedious folk song that I won't link to it.

There's a lyric that's nice, suggested by it butnot in it, cited as an example of mutual metaphor, tenor and vehicle interchangeable

She leaned her back against a thorn
(Fine flowers in the valley)
And there she has her young child born
(And the green leaves they grow rarely).

Mutual metaphor shows up in the refrains of ballads.

Don't you feel better now that you are out? Like your "wife's" sons? You probably feel like prancing and so on.

But you didn't answer the question - why did that sad sack of liberal shit that you are married to grow ugly-ass jowls on her face? She really looks hideous.

Trooper York said...

Lem you should you use the old system. The nesting thing eats comments so when you go over 200 you can't read anything. Change the format back to the regular one and the comments will be in linear order like they were at TOP or at my joint.

But as always it is up to you amigo.

I got a very flattering invitation to contribute to a new blog.

I emailed back asking if I could blog my decision but I got no response.

After giving it some though, I'm writing here to politely decline for several reasons that have occurred to me. I said before, I'm a commenter first, blogger distant far-cry second, and I'm also not college educated. It would be pretentious of me to engage in something people who would interact with have certain expectations.

Sixty Grit seems like some old guy who lives in the woods by himself. I think he sounds like someone who lives in North Carolina. I'm certain he isn't Mary. He is however, a psycho.

rhhardin said...

The comment nesting works for me. It makes it easier find responses.

As long as it says load more at the bottom, keep loading more, and you'll have it all.

Less whatever blogger screws up and drops, but that happens in either system.

The Dude said...

It is also telling that you used the name "Helen" in your comment - was it not the success of Dr. Helen Smith's book that sent you "wife" into her current fugue state?

Of course, just looking in the mirror might do that in her case - fucking Medusa was less scary looking.

Don't knock living in a Unabomber-style shack until you've tried it!

Back when I was actually walking to work, there was a family compound on the road, deep in the woods, where there was a shack back behind the main family house. I'm pretty sure some life-failure scion of that well-off family was living back there. This is more common than you'd think. My great-aunt lives in a neighborhood full of useless fortyish or fiftyish unemployed males living with their parents, including one living in a trailer behind his rich mother's house. Ever since '08, the number of Thoreaus camped out in their mother's outbuildings has absolutely skyrocketed. We're becoming a nation of worthless Thoreaus, I fear.

Here is a link to a tutorial to nest comments. I know you want to UN nest them but perhaps that might help understand how it happens. It seems rather complicated so I doubt that you (Lem) did this process.

Maybe the nesting option came with the template that you have chosen? What if you chose a different pre-made template.

Or....perhaps it isn't worth the trouble??

I like Lem's Comment blog partially because we get to see Meade around here more than we did there, back in his commenter role like days of yor. (or is it yore? -- Does anyone have an OED around here?!)

As far as Zimmerman (since commenting here about the commenting not happening there is too meta for me to keep up with), I suspect it wasn't as much intentional as stress related. Probably a naturally big guy who tried to stay in shape for his police aspirations, then had to stay inside a whole lot, and experienced a huge amount of stress especially in the early aftermath. Most people won't know what he looks like even still, though, because they're looking for a white guy.

Paddy O said...

Another thing I like about Lem's place is that it matches my time zone. With Althouse, I'm always posting 2 hours in the future and it messed with my personal time stream.

And about the college-educated stuff, I entirely agree with Madawaskan.

Like I said let Lem decide what works best for him.

I just thought that the format that lets all the comments be seen one after another instead of nesting is a better fit. But it is of course Lem's choice.

It is also his choice as to he listens to and what he does. But I think the crazy people are outing themselves here on a simple question of what style format is best. It's like arguing about what shape the conference table should be at the Peace talks.

That's it!

Meade and Inga are Viet Cong!

That lampshades story reminds me of a trip I took to Waukasha county up in Wisconsin one time.

I stopped in a bar and there was this scabby old prostitute sitting there trading blow jobs for beer. Said her name was Sandra Inga Detrich, and that she was Austrian. I didn't want anything to do with her or her infectious smile - but she wouldn't shut up. Kept talking to herself like a crazy woman.

Anyway, she had these lampshades her uncle had given her - she said he had died in a concentration camp in WWII - turns out he fell out of the guard tower.

They all had tattoos on them, and she just adored the idea that her family had done so well in the war, right up until they became DPs, which was something else she was into.

She told me she was a widow lady - her first husband had committed suicide (self murder according to the bleached blonde whore sitting next to her) after listening to Inga's insanity for a couple of years. I sure understood that - a few minutes of her raving had me looking for something sharp.

Said her daughter was in the service - well, actually, that she serviced men in uniform. Women too - it's a family tradition.

Her mother's maiden name was Braun, they had been providing comfort to dictators for generations.

She kept losing track of how many children she had - sometimes it was three, sometimes four, heck, she was so stupid she wasn't too sure some of them were even hers. Austrians are the Pollacks of Europe that way.

Anyway, I backed out of that hell hole and have never been back to Wisconsin since. Those are some stupid people up there, but they sure are full of hatred.
