This is the true face of Anti-Althousia.

Here?  This place, Comments Home?  No, not hardly.

Here.  The execrable site Lawyers Guns and Money, a motley collective of "antizionist" (perfumed antisemitic) socialist academics with sloppy beer guts and ironic Expos hats.  One of the whitest, most male-dominated third-tier blogs in existence, all of the contributors are white men, who spend their time railing against the white male hegemony, to an almost-entirely white male audience of a few dozen commenters.  The commenters compete to see who can say "THIS." first in every thread.  It's a sad echo-chamber of lickspittles eager to polish the knob of the author of the post -- sort of the antithesis of TOP.

Actually, they don't spend all of their time on the hegemony:  They're also obsessed with Althouse.  They loathe her over there.

More after the jump.

The innocuous Althouse post that they pounce upon concerns the very controversial issue of...the high-speed train accident.  Althouse could write that water is wet, and these idiots would fling shit all over the internet falling all over each other trying to disprove it.

Althouse says of the accident:

I’m blogging this because it’s not an atypical incident and because too many people in America have unrealistic, idealized notions of the goodness of trains and their capacity to whisk everyone around everywhere at high speed.

And so the author of the post calls Althouse innumerate and a lunatic; because...more people die in automobile accidents per year, in Japan, (??), than die in train accidents.

Not accidents per mile traveled; no, she's innumerate because of the comparison of the absolute number of deaths of the two.

Someone actually brought this up in the comments:

2011 Figures:
5.7 Fatalities per 100 million passenger train-miles
1.1 Fatalities per 100 Million Vehicle Miles Traveled
And after 10 or 15 comments debating the subtleties of division, addition, and subtraction, the heretic is smacked down with this gem:

All in all, it would appear that our rail system is, for passengers, notably safer than car travel. Rail is killing more people per passenger-mile than are cars, but (1) they’re not on the trains; (2) passenger-miles make little sense when discussing American train volume; and (3) the preponderance of the train victims probably result from bad infrastructure and maintenance.
So their answer is:  Sure, technically, our statement that trains are safer than cars isn't supported by your dark art, arithmetic -- rail kills more people per mile than cars.  And sure, that's not even high-speed rail, which is probably quite a bit more dangerous than conventional.  But those victims weren't actually on the train, so...they don't count.

Set aside for a moment the fact that Althouse never compared trains to cars, never stated that one was more dangerous than the other; these idiots lost an argument to their own strawman.

Jesus, these people are stupid.  And vicious.  From the post itself:  “I occasionally wonder how much They pay Althouse to play a craven jackass online, then I realize They probably just ply her with flowers and an Internet Husband…”

A sampling from the comments:  “This person is really a professor of law at Wisconsin?”  (And you, a law professor!) “high on box wine”;  “…butt-chugging cheap box wine…”;and so on.  One commenter invites her to commit suicide on train tracks.

And then further down, a comment that's really quite instructive:

“Looks like she picked the right month to turn off comments. Oh wait, that would have been any month ever.”
These are the Althouse readers who wanted her to do away with comments.

They haven't had a train go off the rails here (Gov. Richardson was a big "Roadrunner" commuter train booster between Sante Fe and Albuquerque) but they have people hit by the train every so often.

The biggest problem with "mass" transit is that it's not really "mass" transit. It doesn't carry enough people.

Matt Sablan said...

The -real- problem with mass transit is that it just isn't reliable, safe, clean, comfortable or cost-efficient.

In a week, I spend about $50-$60 (about $10/day to and from work and another $15 or so doing misc. travel.) That's an awful lot to not have the luxury of a car; the cost sky rockets if I want to, you know, go places other than walking distance before/after work/weekends.

Pasta, this wins my award for best post on this blog so far.

Actually, you can look up the stats for the 1920s and 1930s when people were still traveling by rail, and compare the accident rates.

The current ones are deceptive because so few people travel by train vs. Car. The Railroads are primarily interested in moving freight, and they get priority over Amtrak trains.

Two apartments ago I had the coolest house that was like a cowboy house in the middle of gingerbread types, some Queen age, like Anne, ornamentations, the Baker area, and my landlord lived on the other side. Old as Time, something of an activist, Walk for Cuba sort of guy, first car a Model-T he bought for 5 bucks, had two twin boys twice my age, one an executive with a railroad, and the other one fairly severely retarded. They are identical except for that.

The retarded one loves riding the so-called high-speed rail, lets say, commuter rail, into town to the end, make the switch, come back. The old man takes the son once a week when the son visits from his community home where he lives in Pueblo. I went with them once, and the twin nearly pissed himself with excitement, just moving on the train. He held onto the pole tightened up and squealed even though there are plenty of seats.

"Settle down."

O

He would come over and I'd let him feed my fish. Kids of all ages always want to overfeed so I warned about that and carefully explained why that is so, why it is dangerous, and why it is bad and so forth, turn around and the whole top is covered with fish flakes floating down.

And the moral of these two intertwined anecdotes is trains are immensely enjoyable for tards, and that is not an unkind observation.

As for Althouse and the left. One reason she turned off the comments is she thought the comments were becoming a toxic dump of conservative views. And she didn't want to get smeared as a "conservative". She's stated repeatedly, that she's not a conservative, but that [paraphrase] conservatives like (now liked) to hang out in her comment section.

IOW, she has a lot more politically in common with the Lefties at "Guns and Lawyers" than some think.

As for reliable: There have been times when buses are supposed to come by every half hour, and I've walked three hours down the same route the bus goes and not seen a one. Imagine if I were not a relatively healthy young man and were, say, elderly, middle-aged, not in good health, or walking in a bad area. No way in Hell would I trust my safety to the whims of the bus driver.

And this is in the Metro DC area -- one of the areas where mass transit is at its best in the country.

Clean and comfortable are obvious problems, though the D.C. Metro system is cleaner than most American ones, I hear.

Matt Sablan said...

Now, take those two points (unreliable/cost-efficient), and you hit another point. The three to four hours a week I waste waiting for late buses/Metro trains are a lot of hours. Most people are productive during those wasted hours thanks to handheld devices/books.

But, there's an opportunity cost there. I can't apply for certain jobs because, even though the Metro/bus SAYS it will get me there and back again every day, odds are, most days, I'd be late if I don't buffer an extra hour or two each way. This is, essentially, geographically hamstringing people without cars who think they really can rely on public transit.

And, it gets more expensive and less reliable every year. Pretty soon, I'm just going to give up on it and get a car.

High-speed trains are also not that fast once you factor in stops. Nor are they particularly eco-friendly once you factor in running half-load trains and the transport to the end-points. So it basically has nothing going for it except spending government money on stuff liberals would find convenient.

Titus said...

Mass Transit is how many travel in the congested East Coast. Many people use it because traffic is a nightmare and parking costs a ton. Places like NYC, DC, Boston are places where it is used big time.

Wisconsin...no, they don't need it.

tits

Matt Sablan said...

But even in those places, mass transit is grossly inefficient and expensive. The week I was in Boston, I used their mass transit. It was, at least, not as crowded as D.C.'s, but I was only there during off-peak times and on vacation, so, the cost/crunch wasn't as bad.

Meade said...

You're mistaken, rcocean. Left or right, she has nothing in common with the people who are ill-equipped, intellectually, to read for comprehension what she writes but who have just enough wherewithal to make inane insulting comments.

Meade said...

Also, Pastafarian, calling her post "innocuous" misses just why that post of hers was so irksome to the lefties at LG&M. Read it again - carefully - and I think you might see that it was aimed at them and meant to irk them. But you have to slow down and read every word to get it. She has always written that way and many of her long-time readers (not necessarily commenters) love that about her.

Synova said...

The remark about bad maintenance as though we don't have to count those accidents, deaths or injuries because of course we could have *good* maintenance completely ignores that the very nature of trains means that when something goes wrong that it's going to be very bad... like an airliner crash. Cars are safer because if you "go off the rails" you're probably going to be fine. At worse you kill yourself and the innocent people in the car you hit. With seatbelts and airbags everyone might simply get out and walk away like the people Zimmerman helped out of their over turned truck.

Synova said...

Althouse said that the accident was not atypical... it was a clearly anti-rail post.

Of course the high speed rail mass transit is next to godliness huge projects are good for the economy idiots will find it irksome.

Matt Sablan said...

Can we not count the car accidents caused by bad maintenance? If we do that, how does that impact the numbers?

If you did a Venn diagram of Althouse's political beliefs and those of Lawyers and Guns, you'd find quite a bit of overlap. They hate her because she's a heretic, not because she's a conservative.

Her political beliefs are those of a highly intelligent open-minded critical-thinking country-loving politically moderate American with a complex sense of humor and an extraordinary talent for reading, thinking, and writing.

Commenters at LG&M, just as so many of her own so-called "conservative" former commenters, have often tried to do "shorter Althouse" and invariably fail. Left or right, they just don't get her.

"Fernando Covert" -- I used the word "innocuous" because nothing in the post seemed controversial enough to justify the shrill tone of their "counter". Or really any counter at all, of any tone.

(Actually, re-reading this, it's really poorly written. I'll blame Blogger. Yeah, that's it.)

I don't know how carefully to read an Althouse post, "Fernando". She jumped all over Salamandyr with poop-jokes because he spent TOO MUCH time reading them.

rcocean -- you're right, they consider her an apostate and that's why they hate her.

But she's not really an apostate from the left, IMO. I think the left left Althouse. She's a classical liberal, one of a dying breed. LG&M are hard leftists.

They'd agree with her, in a way, on whether abortion should be legal. But you'll recall the Althouse paradox that abortion is murder, yet it should be legal, because of the woman's right of self-determination.

The overgrown adolescents at LG&M think abortion should be legal because it helps get them laid by not-terribly-choosey hippie chicks. They don't give a damn whether the fetus is viable, human, life, or tissue.

I'm sure they "agree" on a few other issues, but they arrive at those points by different routes, and there will be enough devil in the details to make a mess of your Venn diagram.

The contrast between Althouse and LG&M was clearest if you looked at her comments section, and theirs. They delete and ban anyone who effectively argues against them. Althouse welcomed all comers. That's the modern left, compared to classical liberalism, in a nutshell.

Rabel said...

Peace only works if it's a two-way process, Brother. Otherwise the pacifists always end up holding the stinky end of the stick.

Pastafarian said...

Oh, OK then, Fernando.

So she did use a post that included insults and accusations aimed at (at least some) commenters then. OK, I can't argue with that, then.

I mean, if her post had been something so saccharine as, say...looking at records handed down from her father -- I mean, that would be absurd, wouldn't it? If she opened comments for something like that, where no one here, even Sixty Grit in his most enraged state, would possibly come in and say anything even remotely negative...and then you came in and said how great the comments were over there, compared to how they used to be...

Well, that would just be embarrassingly intellectually dishonest. Bereft of any integrity.

And if she were to comment in that same thread, and say something like "Oh, what a sweet bunch of comments..." Well, that would be just about too much, wouldn't it? Implying that those heathens and barbarians she had over there before, Synova and Paddy O, would have burst into the thread and called her a cocksucker.

Ann makes over $160K, last I checked, and that was from a 2-3 year old report. $5,000 means a lot less to her than some people.

And I'm pretty sure none of Palladian's prints go for that.

Unless they commissioned a life size mural of the two of them nekkid together, entwined like vines.

For what it's worth... this is all reminding me of when Obama was running for President and said that people who opposed him were going to do so because he didn't look like the men on the money. Being upset about this pre-emptive charge of racism towards those who had not yet done so but *would* was attacked in the same dumb way...

You had no RIGHT being angry for being called a racist by Obama because if you weren't a racist then he wasn't talking to you.

Same bull-shit.

I found it annoying, though I didn't take it personally, but I do recall Althouse getting on the cases of some of us women who agreed that men should not be victimized and that there was inherent unfairness in the system that allowed women that sort of power and then portrayed men as supposed to suck it up or have their masculinity attacked.

How juvenile is it? Right about up there with "wow, you've got a little dick."

Usually Althouse would point out when feminists or women or whoever were trying to claim they were extra special on account of they were female and suddenly the men who complain are uber beta and must be insulted?

And no one was supposed to think she was talking to them unless convicted of it by their guilty hearts?

Yeah... the only reason I complained about Obama was because he didn't look like the guy on the money because no way I'd have seen that as wrongly accusing me of being a racist unless that's what I really was.

"Ooooo... you have a tiny dick."

There has to be a decision made.

A place where people are not made to continually bow down and worship Althouse.

A place that gains some altitude.

I doubt that happens at a place where Meade is still honored by others who ask that he be treated differently.

I was hoping to let Meade talk about it and get it out of his system.

What seems to be happening is--Althouse said shut up.

Then their sycophants said shut up.

The thing doesn't get cured until all of the steam gets let out.

In my opinion.

It's too bad but the people who aren't going to submit to being run through the outsourced Rocky Mountain Oyster factory--probably need to get a Plan B.

Allowing Cedarford to fester or go unchallenged was a mistake.

Tolerating what Meade does here and giving him special privileges to boot--is going to be a mistake.

You are probably losing many people--at the cost of asking them to tolerating that.
