Open Thread

Jeff Beck and Friends at the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame 25th Anniversary Concert 2009

I wasn't "feeling it" this morning. I mean, really? How many ways are there to beat a dead horse, no pun intended. So, I saw how Rh mentioned he got another fifty pound bag of brown rice and I went looking for a rice Music tune for this Open Thread. I found a Jeff Beck 'Rice Pudding' video, but it wasn't a live performance and it cut off before the tune ended. And then I saw this one, from the 2009 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Concert, and it wasn't too bad. It just wasn't rice pudding that's all.

Open Thread means anything we want, including rice.

My father would take leftover white rice (my mom used Minute Rice, exclusively) and treat it like breakfast cereal. In a bowl, milk, sugar, and cinnamon. Raisins, if we had them. Spoon it up.

He called it rice pudding and he'd eat it for dessert after dinner.

I just assumed it had something to do with coming of age during the Great Depression.

Rice pudding is delicious when done right. And it works as well with brown rice.

Minute Rice is not a depression meal, since it is expensive (you pay for them parboiling and then drying out the rice again). Regular rice is fine, you just have to wait 15 minutes for it to too (and with brown you are waiting about 30-45 minutes).

You can put brown rice in the slow cooker too. I do wild rice in it also.

Frankly, I don't how they put up with it so long. That said, it was truly a wonderful experience while it lasted. The truth is that what I think Althouse imagined she might create was not really possible in an open anonymous forum.

Despite that difficulty she came surprising close, and it was only a very few people and a very few subjects that made it messy or ugly. Of course she gets the blame for it ending because only she could end it, but I would have long ago.

Obviously, Ann pissed off and or disappointed some of us with some of her stands and tone, but that's just more of the same stuff lots of people were throwing about. We just expected better from her, but had no such delusions about the rest. Still none of that is beyond repair or smoothing over in my opinion, although I think some opinions have permanently changed.

I assume Meadehouse are just tired of the work, the constant need of the blog for attention 24/7. Hell you don't even have your own dog, why be tethered to this crap all the time. I completely understand that. I never would have lasted this long, and it's why I don't even try to start an active blog. Mine is just a place to drop stuff I might want to share, which is very rare.

I completely understand the Althouse decision, although it was done with very bad timing and execution. Big decisions affecting lots of people should not be emotionally driven. Regardless, it is done now, and I wish both Meade and Ann the best. I really enjoyed the few years I visited, and shared in a special group that Ann attracted and enticed to open up.

It was special, and the craziness was part of the attraction, even when I hated it. Some things in life are like that. No hard feelings here, and best of luck with whatever you do.

True that, although Ann's latest statement may indicate she changed her mind recently over what direction she wanted the blog to take.

She seemed nettled in the vid at the idea people were coming for the comments and not her posts.

YMMV

Despite that difficulty she came surprising close, and it was only a very few people and a very few subjects that made it messy or ugly. Of course she gets the blame for it ending because only she could end it, but I would have long ago.

I think it was getting involved in the business at the capitol in '11 that was the turning point, but I agree wholeheartedly.

Obviously, Ann pissed off and or disappointed some of us with some of her stands and tone, but that's just more of the same stuff lots of people were throwing about.

In the end, she was doing 20+ posts a day in some cases.

That is one Hell of a lot of work and some of the people who blog themselves should have been a little more understanding.

We just expected better from her, but had no such delusions about the rest. Still none of that is beyond repair or smoothing over in my opinion

Agreed, although a gesture from her might help.

I assume Meadehouse are just tired of the work

As I said above although I still think she doesn't look well.

Cross-posted from last night's open thread:

Comments - as we knew them - will never return to the Althouse blog.

And who knows what that really means, like Meade's earlier blather about "selfish and emotional overreactions to minor problems."

I'm certain Althouse won't return to the wild west commenting that led to her meltdown, but the door is wide open for comments as didn't know them, whatever form that might take -- restricted membership, more proactve hosting, faster banning of obstreperous commenters, etc.

I still believe commenting will return to Althouse for traffic reasons and because it provided an interaction that at its best inspired her and she found enjoyable.

I find it pretty easy to imagine Althouse bristling at bagoh20's 11:42.

She's no fragile flower in need of anyone's sympathy.

That's been one of her major themes from the very beginning of her blog.

Young Althouse needed to be liked but grownup Althouse is fully self-sufficient, intellectually engaged and tough as nails.

But I'm a softie and I admit it.

Feel free to pity me.

Picking up where we left off on Edward Snowden.

All the articles I have seen about it have a sameness about them, like they originated from the same source and play the same tune on the same one-stringed banjo.

Snowden certainly has called a great deal of embarassment, at home and abroad, but the gov't still has not explained much why his revelations have been so damaging as far as national security is concerned. Just saying they are, won't cut it.

I still think the potential for domestic abuse of these programs are so great that they simply must be open to scrutiny, and scrutinized they must be.

You know, when you start your sourdough culture unique to your place you might want to have a race with the yeast culture that is already carried on the flour. Just for the heckofit. You may find that the inherent culture wins. It might even be more complex, more interesting, stronger and faster.

The thing is, the airborne microbes came from another place. It is the microbes the insects bring directly that are truly cite specific. But again, the plants must be from the place and not imported from another place, like grapes would be. So juniper berries then, or throw in some small local flowers, just throw them into the culture and have its yeast and bacteria infect your culture.

I squeezed a few grapes into my bubbling active culture just to change it. I'm calling it Denver, but it is mostly airborne yeast from who knows where, and now grapes from California.

Come over here and let me fix you a little sandwich.

It will change your attitude toward bread permanently. You will be left wondering, "What have I been eating, lo these many decades? What else am I wrong about? What else am I missing? Oh no, I must start my life over again!"

Okay, maybe you had best not come over here, I'm not sure you're ready for it.

Easy peasy rice pudding. Super simple.

2 cups cooked or left over rice
1 1/3 cup milk
1/8 tsp salt
6 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp melted butter
1 tsp vanilla
4 eggs
1 tsp lemon juice
1/2 cup raisins
dash of nutmeg

Grease an 8x8 casserole or baking dish. Beat the eggs well. Add everything else and stir breaking up the clumps of rice. Pour into casserole. Bake at 350 for 50 minutes.

It was funny what some posts took off some times (other than the soapbox ones), and I think she was posting what tickled her fancy one way or t'other, but I think something that just went on and on usually ended up being the usual trolls trying to shout everybody else down.

I mean some of those were 1/4 Ritmo or the UnreasonableTroll snarking at everybody.

Here goes....I am not asking any questions of Ann Althouse, or Meade for that matter. Last time I did, that I recall, seriously was on the SCOTUS/Roberts delusional decision and ignorance of semantic variables regarding tax v penalty vis a vis the PPACA...e.g., Pelosicare.

I did not get an answer. Which is fine. I really didn't expect I'd get one...or even a discussion. Manifest cowardice, and perhaps semantic ignorance [?], by a Supreme Court Justis isn't likely to enthrall other lawyers.

Just look at those lawyers and congress-critters now spewing, post Florida v Zimmerman, that being acquitted, being found not guilty, does not mean found innocent. Guess we've moved on from that presumption of innocence thing to where acquittal changes the import of innocence...what's next, a "bring the guilty bastard in" mentality? I've lived in places like that...and no thank you.

As for the later topics, vis a vis sex variety and male beta-ness...Yawn. That was causing me to visit less, comment less, and that is also fine. At this point I see no reason what-so-ever to debate Althouse's decision or her current topics unless they are off interest to the local commentariat...no different than any other topical source.

nteresting--so it can really taste that different based on---yikes!--microbes?

Yes. Because they're in there living and growing, eating and pooping and farting and sexing it up with each other down there and breaking of duplicates of themselves and dying down there, but mostly farting.

The single organism isolated for bread yeast is chosen specifically for its extraordinary fartyness. Other than that it is not particularly delicious.

And that is a different strain than the strain chosen for lager which is a different strain isolated for the malt beers. Having to do with temperature, top and bottom fermenting.

Historically, though, you took what was present in the air and by insects, and it was MAGIC!!!!!!1!!1 nobody understood what was going on. The gods did it.

If you use commercial bread yeast and leave it overnight, cooled to slow it, then it will ferment, and the traces of alcohol contribute significantly to flavor.

The microbes are consuming the flour. They partially digest the bread before you eat it. It's like miso that way. Healthier because they've started the digestion process. And you are not loading up on all that sugar. They did.

Talking about bread frankly is gross innit.

My brother tolerated my proclivities in Maui for three weeks. He doubted it would work, but Maui is a three shower a day place, that right there, and our laundry told me it would work brilliantly. I should have bet him $1,000.00 but that would just been mean.

I collected cultures in one hour and all three are perfectly unique to Maui. The bread is characterized by extra thick crust. The thickest of all. And delicious. It has stayed unique for five years through successive feeding of flour that carries its own microbes.

I can get very good nice clean sourdough flavor using commercial yeast by fermenting the dough for two or three days.

But all that is a project upon projects. Like right now I'm late feeding it, but it forgives me. It's a pain in the ass and I do not recommend it.
