Have Blog Will Travel

This morning in a new post, Althouse discusses the new directions her blog might take.

Althouse is encouraging us to travel on our own... I'm not doing her words justice. I just got up and I haven't brushed my teeth yet.
"As Henry said in his email to me, sharing that first link, above, it was perfectly easy to set up a Blogger blog. It might take one minute, and then you're off. Don't sit there in that old broken-down bus wondering when it will start up again. Climb out, stick out your thumb, and Google will whiz by presently and give you a ride."

Please go and read it and maybe you will say for yourself, in other words, something similar. Here or wherever your final destination might be. Like they say on the plane after it lands. Final destination sounds ominous but sometimes there is no subtle way of saying the obvious. I've said my piece on the comments here (not as eloquently as I could have perhaps) but I harbor no rancor. If I ever do, and I do because I'm human, it doesn't last more than a few days. But, in the end, w/o much fanfare.... I need to go to work soon and I need to finish this.

I read blogs for different reasons; I kind of miss the Althouse comments, but I've got no problem wandering on. Who knows? Maybe I'll get out of my apartment more, see the world, get sun burned and die of skin cancer?

Or you know, good things could happen to. World of possibilities.

Sounds to me like she's given up on the Amazon portal thing.

For now, anyway.

Whatever.

She's got a bunch of other ways to keep score, apparently.

Back in the days when both Althouse and Meade commented on Trooper York (yes there was a time), I proposed that Meade drive a bus west to pick up me up and other commenters along on a journey to find bissage. They both seemed to like the idea at the time. There was such unity of purpose. Alas, those times are long gone it seems.

You are either on the bus or off the bus.

Or, in Ann's case, off her meds.

The line, "Henry is a reader of this blog who has commented in the comments section here, back when my blog had comments", says it all.

Sounds like she doesn't anticipate turning them back on.

Ah well, coming here, and a few other places, kept me from going cold turkey.

Lem, The unexpunged, original version of the "The End" was released on the 40th anniversary CD. About 9 minutes into the song Morrison starts chanting "fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck me baby." It's really quite disturbing. In retrospect, I'm glad Paul Rothschild deleted it. It's like the artist defaced his own work.

FWIW, she always blew hot and cold (no pun) on the Amazon thing anyway.

A lot of people disagree, but I always liked Morrison's vocals. He went free form a lot, but you could always understand the words. I loved the sound of it, and he had a way of making you believe there was more in there if you just listened hard enough. He was probably a pain in the ass to work and party with though. I had plenty of friends like him and was one myself at times. When I was a young man, the girls thought I looked like him, which worked out well for me. If I got really drunk and obnoxious they just thought that was more authentic, which I guess it was. I have always stayed clear of bathtubs though. Dangerous things.

"Exploitation" is when other people make money. I think that's a good thing. I stopped using the Althouse portal, since I'm not getting anything for it now. I don't even read the posts and pushed it way down my home page. Without the commenters there it's just not the place it was, and doesn't entice me. Most other blogs I read, but never comment. Althouse was different, but that might have been my own mental creation. It's like if your friends all got kicked out of the local bar - why would you go there? My own position, being economics-oriented, is that if it costs Amazon then it costs everybody. The mutual benefit between you and Amazon has a third party taking a piece out of it.

It costs Amazon if the portal isn't what produces the sale, that is, if you would have done it anyway with Amazon.

So at least a plea directing you to the portal for your Amazon purchases, as portal havers are wont to do, is uneconomic.

Books that Althouse would get something out of, now that she's freed of comments

Stanley Cavell, Senses of Walden, more depth than you knew Thoreau had.

Wm. Empson, Structure of Complex Words, virtuoso readings of words and their covert doctrines and propaganda by an English Literature guy. A little technical-looking in places but it's a sort of scientific satire, or is willing to be. He's looking for a notation, hoping it will help formalize some intuitions.

It's not really exploitation if, well, it cost you nothing extra. If anything, it is anti-exploitation as it is taking money from Amazon (or some other corporation) and giving it to someone you like.

But it Did cost us - in several ways:

1) Anyone could see it took away from the blog.

2) Giving someone money for misinformation is a bad trade. And giving someone money for misinformation and to "laugh in your scrunched up faces" is a REALLY bad trade.

3) While I was there, Ann led crusades for Obama and Romney - I don't consider either one doing me any favors.

4) Giving someone money to come down on the wrong ethical side, repeatedly? Come ON.

I'll stop - many of you will go along with anything. I'm glad the facade is down. All those "I love you guys" can't hide the truth, as Ronald Bailey made clear:

Ann Althouse is, was, and probably always will be a nut job - but now with Meade to help maintain the delusion of normalcy to the uninitiated.

That's who's important to them now,...

rhhardin said...

Every woman is a nutjob. That doesn't make them bad people.

Instawife has a whole book about it.

The Dude said...

High ho indeed, but enough about Inga.

bagoh20 said...

Here is how it works:

A blogger creates a place where people are drawn. That's not easy, as many people have discovered. Like all successful endeavors, it takes talent, work, and luck. The people there appreciate the place, and out of that appreciation use the portal. Once there, they commit commerce with Amazon. Amazon benefits, and pays the blogger for that. This extra business at Amazon makes Amazon succeed which employs people, pays taxes and improves what Amazon can offer it's customers. The blogger is paid and thus encouraged to work on and continue the place they made.

Everyone wins, but it only happens because the blogger successfully made a place people liked enough to visit and use the portal, which does require a big helping of luck, which any smart and successful person will not underestimate. Like I said, very hard to do, but apparently much easier to undo.

I Have Misplaced My Pants said...

Inga is not a sockpuppet. No one else has the penchant for run-on sentences that she does.

Bushman of the Kohlrabi said...

I agree bagoh. I stopped using the portal for the same reason. She's selling a different product now and it doesn't really interest me. Oh, I still visit her a few times a day out of habit but I find myself disappointed each time. In her case, the comments made the blog. She's obviously smart and is good with wordplay but I find her writing style somewhat tedious when it stands alone. At least she had the good sense to disable comments completely. The back and forth banter between her and Meade when only they were allowed to comment was downright painful.

bagoh20 said...

I know this works on a microeconomic level, because it's exactly that I experienced personally. I enjoyed the Althouse blog experience, and wanted to show my appreciation by using the portal. I would have even if there was a small surcharge for doing so. I was after all trying to show my appreciation, not just buy something. Once at Amazon, their business setup and policies enticed me to buy stuff I had no intention of buying before I went through that portal. Afterward I was impressed with Amazon, and the cycle repeated. It's classic, it's genius, and it's very effective.

rhhardin said...

There was a hi-fi record in the 50s called Speed the Parting Guest, full of hi-fi demo sounds.

Buying through the Althouse portal is giving to charity.

There's nothing inherently wrong with that but that's what it is.

I prefer to give charity to those less fortunate.

Why did she wait so long before installing the portal, anyway?

My guess is her initial discomfort was eventually overcome by her ever-increasing need to keep score.

William Shatner said that an actor will fail unless he is "focused, narcissistic and competitive."

Althouse knows that as well as anybody.

Which is fine by me, I might add.

Most of the value of Ann's site were the commenters. I read almost all the comments every day (Am I really admitting to that?). Although I commented only a dozen or so times, I read her site from the very early days.

I continue to check Ann's site once or twice a day now, but there is nothing compelling there; I'm done looking at in in 5 minutes (vs hours when there were comments). In the past, the comments sometimes got ugly and unreadable, but most of the time they made up the real value of Ann's site.

On the other hand, now I have the gift of an extra hour or two of productive time every day, so I've got that going for me.

Well, I did until I found Lem's blog... :-)

bagoh20 said...

It's not charity, because the blogger has to do something you like to get your business. Even charity isn't usually charity. You give because you like what the organization does and it makes you feel good. You are getting something back.

The portal is more like an advertisement tatooed on a stripper's ass. You were gonna look anyway, but you aren't looking at everyone's ass. OK, maybe that analogy doesn't work for everyone.

There's no causal nexus. Althouse will do what she wants to do irrespective of whether you divert that percentage to her or to some other blogger with a portal and there are many. She's well aware of that, of course, which is why she says, in so many words, "Show me you love me and it costs you nothing."

She's maintained several themes consistently over the years and number one has to be: "Don't you dare try to tell me what to do."

My point is, a begger on the street is going to try to survive whether you give him money or not. You give him money because his life has intrinsic worth, you believe, so you want it to continue.

Giving him money is called charity.

There are lots of things we can do with our money to make us feel good.

Interesting sub-thread. The Amazon Portal was the least fascinating thing on all of Althouse to me. I am an Amazon ignoramus, of course...if there is a way to get an order wrong there, I will find it. I have those issues no where else on the Internet. Therefore I just paid a reasonable amount directly to the blog via PayPal periodically. I do best with the simple and straightforward, never mind what that might imply.

Anyway, Lem's been a class act, and if I am around much I would be happy to contribute by PayPal donation or other direct and simple means as uncomplicated as PayPal. Even by check if necessary...just don't like credit cards except when physically necessary. From who I see here it is likely I'll read and maybe comment. I meant what I said in my final remark posted by Ann at the end. A worthwhile forum is worth support for the convenience it provides because of the diversity of opinions provided and organized by others.

No. You are not giving business. There is no transaction. No consideration. No quid pro quo. Althouse does not get from you a contract of any stripe.

You are giving a contribution; a percentage of a sum that could go to some other place.

Again, I see nothing wrong with sending Althouse your love. But it's still charity, going to a tenured law professor who has a nifty hobby and some ambitions which may or may not be pretentious, depending on one's inclinations.

I look at charity as a form of sharing.

Now for donation, however made, to a blog, or buying a book, or acquiring a piece of art, whatever, that is just paying for something I/we like and use. In no way does it make me "feel good" per se.

"Now for donation, however made, to a blog, or buying a book, or acquiring a piece of art, whatever, that is just paying for something I/we like and use. In no way does it make me "feel good" per se."

I take donations on my blog. No one - except for Meade - has ever asked for anything in return. When I've talked to them about it, they say the same thing as Aridog - they don't do it to feel good but to make it possible for me to continue. Let's compare:

Right now, I've been laying in bed in pain for a week and a half with a bad back, and my truck (which I need for work) is sitting dead in my driveway, for some unknown reason, because I've been laying in bed for a week and a half with a bad back. I can't see the doctor until Thursday and I have no idea if I can even afford to be seen (One asked for $1,800 up front. The low-income clinic has a 5 month waiting list.) I haven't really had a good night's sleep since Monday. I'm still nursing an ulcer from a month ago, and there's something else developing in my gut, too. I've barely taken a shit in a week. My roommate just got put in a long-term care facility - which I had to physically make happen because his family's out of town - so I've got two rooms to rent, or pay for, without him. And - on top of all that - I'm working on an album, to blow the socks off of everyone who hears it, that I can't work on because of everything else. Shit, I can't even stand for longer than 4 minutes at a time.

You may not always agree with me, or how I express myself, but I think you know I'll hear you, I'm down with you, will say I'm wrong if necessary, try to be honest, love my country, and want the right things.

But, for whatever reason, you'd rather contribute to a self-promoting feminist weirdo making $177,000 a year who hates you for your gender.

I guess I should jump on the "hate whitey" bandwagon and watch the funds roll in.

As presented to me, that's the way of the world,...

IMHO, Althouse does not "hate men."

She has a fairly strict, traditional view of what used to be called something along the lines of "the manly virtues," if that doesn't sound too hokey.

She used to actively court commenters of a military bent. She's made reference to her parents' military background, favorably. She once asked Fen out on a date, sort of. There's much more, of course. Meade, the man she married late in life with the clearest of heads, is a man along those lines, so far as I can tell.

Military doesn't mean macho (sorry, TMR). Alhouse HATES macho. She hates macho so much that she loves the nebbishy type so long as they're clever. Woody Allen. Larry David. Sacha Baron whateverhisnameis Cohen. My Breakfast with Andre.

The military-type shows calm resolve, makes a plan, and impliments. The Larry David type invents an entertaining diversion that also somehow claims as much as can be gained from a losing situation.

When her commentariat took its position on legal and arguably unjustified discrimination against men, that set off Alhouse's I-hate-macho fight-or-flight response. Althouse went on the attack bcause she thought she was going after pseudo-manly men. She saw herself as defending the other two types of classical man.

I could be wrong.

I wasn't really paying much attention.

I have to get me one because I am going on a Norwegian Cruise Line trip at the end of the summer and I want to party like a Norwegian.

I am just afraid that involves pickled herring and sweaters with reindeer on them.

I don't have a problem with her shutting down comments for a while if she wants to regroup or whatever reason she wants. It's her blog, so she can just say "I'm tired of shit, and need a break." or " "Aww don't feel noways tired. I've come too faarrr from where I started frum."

I am put off by what happened just before that. Unless she wanted to get rid of people like me, closing comments was risky at this time. I wasn't feeling the love. She was laughing at my huge metaphorical penis in Lorena Bobbitt's bloody hand and telling me to man up. The fishing is good, and it's summer.

If so, I don't remember her making that point. I do remember a bunch of ugly stuff, including a complete lack of compassion for men at a substantial legal disadvantage without the resources to fight back. It doesn't matter what kind of man you are in the system. All that matters is money and government power. The best man in the village can have his family and future ruined by the worst woman in the village, and Althouse would watch and giggle. That's the impression I got anyway.

bagoh20 said...

Yea, I thought I'd like it, but it's too hard to see what you are missing.

Freeman Hunt said...

Same. It works well when there are only half a dozen comments, but with over a hundred comments, it's sort of like doing a word search. (And really, who, apart from children, likes word searches?)

Kudos to Lem that this is even a problem. Congratulations on your blogging success!

She is a wrinkly, jowly, obese self-murdering blonde who is uglier than homemade sin. Recently she seems to have suffered a psychotic break. She is a communist. Her sons are gay.

Yeah, that proves Meade is a good faith "husband".

Althouse has some posts that could attract opinions, the attraction being that your opinion is attracted, if there were comments.

No, she (Althouse) looks good for a woman of her years, but I think there's something wrong medically.

She's thinner, earlier her cheeks were a bit sunken (she seems to have put on a little weight), and her hair has gotten drier; all this and she started snapping at people around New Year's

Maybe it was the stress of the "election", maybe the harassment got to her, but I do think she's not feeling well and that may have more to do with her meltdown than anything.

The Dude said...

Yeah, that was pretty rough, but since we know next to nothing of the personal lives of those we interact with on the internet, it is absurd to speculate about how faithful someone is.

Clearly, Ann is not in a good place mentally, and Meade is just throwing fuel on the fire here. He really needs to tend to the issue at hand, which is the fact that his "wife" has gone around the bend.

Anonymous said...

Sixty Grit beat his second wife when she would no longer change his diapers and feed him her breast milk out of a bottle, then he shot her dead.

rhhardin said...

In the beginning, there were two regions: Muspellsheimr in the south, full of fire, light and heat; and Niflheimr in the north, full of arctic waters, mists, and cold. Between them stretched the yawning emptiness of Ginnungagap, and into it poured sparks and smoke from the south and layers of rime-ice and glacial rivers from the north. As heat and cold met in Ginnungagap, a living Jötunn, Ymir, appeared in the melting ice. From his left armpit, the first man and woman were born.

Does that not explain commenters?

The few times I've wandered into the Volkh Conspiracy's comments section, I ended up doing a search for my own name to find the subthreads I had participated in; alternatively, you can always search by timestamp to find where the tree is branching. But yes, branch threading can break down once you're over a hundred or so comments.

I have 3 nesting boxes on my patio. Each has raised 2 clutches so far this year of three birds each. I also have 5 dogs, and one pond. The dogs have not hurt a single bird as they inevitably hop around the patio on their first flight. The dogs just assume that like all birds, they will fly away as soon as they get close to them, so they they don't bother trying. The pond on the other hand has claimed 3 out of 18. The pond goldfish and Koi see this as right and good. "Tastes like chicken." Pitbulls 0 - Fish 3.

A couple of James Bond moments got their humor from taking on feminism

Bond has a female evaluator in the passenger seat and a lady in a fast car passes him. There follows a huge and dangerous car chase, with the evaluator screaming to stop the car.

After the chase ends in the lady spinning out, Bond stops the car.

"As you can see, I have no problem with female authority figures."

Anne Hathaway's Get Smart actually does much better at macho vs feminism entertainment.

Sixty, I'm taking nobody's side, just offering a theory, based on physical observation. Trying to figure out the meltdown.

You disagree with my theory? Fine, but you seem to be doing what Althouse was doing at the end - assume an awful lot.

And you know what happens when you assume.

You also might want to get the chip off your shoulder. I have no quarrel with you, nor do I want one. If you want to expend a lot of energy hating her, it's your loss; just don't expect the rest of the universe to join you.

PS I see the She Devil of the SS is still trying to hide behind someone else again with her standard passive-aggressive pile-on techniques. She clearly knows nobody likes her so she wants to play Anonymous.

As if anyone else would imitate her drivel.

I'm betting she's banned before the weekend is over.

My beef is with Meade commenting here as if he is not a hypocritical bitch - he is a dishonest man who is not at all honorable. I know about some of his past behavior and let me just say that he is a sleazy guy who latched onto a meal ticket.

You, meh, you obviously love Althouse, which, when you get right down to it, is your problem. But she is still ugly.

Sixty, again, you're assuming an awful lot. There are other people out there wondering what happened. Are you going to tell me sydney or deborah or bag also "still love her"?

I noticed a change in her behavior around New Year's and wondered what was happening.

I have made no excuses for her behavior, which I think was reprehensible. Her little "La la la" on that last cafe was a slap in everyone's face. If she's sick medically, that excuses nothing. She could have told us all, "I'm having trouble dealing right now, so I need to shut down for a while".

And when did I ever say anything about Meade here, pro or con?

I'm not aware of any clear explanation from Althouse about why the comments were closed. She put up a couple of very provoking posts recently (the "losers" post about gay marriage and the "money-grubbing beta male splooge stooge" post about the WarOnMen). These posts, entirely predictably, generated a lot of mocking and counter-attacks and then counter-counter-attacks. There were some really vile comments, from both perspectives pro and con, but that's not without precedent nor was it unpredictable given the provoking post. And she could just delete such comments consistent with stated policy. But then comments were suspended without explanation. Mystery Theater. Everything since has been rumor and innuendo. There was a rumor that commenter "Mary" had dropped some bombs. There were a couple of hints from Althouse about the supposed overabundance of stubborn conservative viewpoints in the comments. There was an effort to mix it up again with Instapundit of the War On Men issue. At this point I don't care enough to read the tea leaves or reconstruct. And that's assuming there's an intellectual perspective to reconstruct and not just an emotional cyber melt down.
