and yet the fear level is still stoked

even though what we have is objectively less murders every year, (double karate chop) we have less crime (double karate chop), we are living in a safe society (double karate chop), at the same time crime is going down, and we are (table jab) putting (table jab) more (table jab) people (table jab) in prison (ta daaa)
Amazingly, the woman sitting there listening to Chris Hayes spouting frenetically deluded stupid silly nonsense does not say, "You idiot."

The comments pin him like a nail gun, a joy to behold.

You're expecting rationality at MSLSD?

The first comment tickles me. "Fox Butterfield, is that you?"

You can almost taste the journalism school teacher's pet sauce dripping off that.

The Butterfield Fallacy

I guess the thinking goes that crime is down, so we just fill up the prisons with innocent people instead, because we just like doing that so much. I guess some on the left think we all have multiple wives locked up in our basement too, when in fact very few of us have that, and the rest of you are just jealous. Don't judge me. I bet you can't blog in your underwear anytime you want.

I can't get over how much Hayes looks like Rachel Maddow. Has anyone ever seen them together at the same time?

Supposedly Hayes plays a roughhousing game of basketball every day. I just can't see it. He looks like someone who'd bruise easily and cry at the drop of a hat.

Crime is declining in most western nations whether they're putting more people in prison or not.

Presumably our aggressive incarceration is responsible for some of the decline, but there appears to be something else at work here too.

Personally, I credit the existence of readily available porn and violent video games/movies. Helps take the edge off the aggressive folks.

That Freakonomics guy says it's legalized abortion.

I buy the abortion hypothesis. There is also the reduction in lead n the environment one too. Possibly also the improved forensics that makes getting caught more likely.
